Can't re-add authenticator without phone I no longer have

Topic says it all.

I went to go remove my authenticator from my old phone that hasn’t had service in like 5 years, because I was lazy and never got around to re-adding it and the 1 in 1000 times I need it I just pull the old phone out, charge it for 5 mintues, turn it on, use the authenticator and never need it again for another 6+ months.

I remove the authenticator from the phone, try and re-add to my new phone, but it’s saying I need a security code sent to a phone number I no longer have and haven’t had access to for years.

Please help and normally I am not so “please hurry” but PLEASE do hurry and help me fast the idea of my account not having an authenticator is literally causing me physical harm through so much stress I cannot even remember if I have ever been this anxious and stressed in my life PLEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASE

edit: I cant even remove my old phone without HAVING the old phone. I cant believe I am the only person to ever be in this situation? Where I just dont have access to an old unused phone which the phone number most certainly belongs to someone else now.

Isn’t there an option to remove the authenticator?

I have literally no idea. I ALREADY removed the authenticator from my old phone so I can’t just “nevermind” and re-add it.

Also I can’t even log into my account anymore, just getting Error 500 every time. I logged out and back in and Error 500.

You will find an option under the support link at the top-right of this page to enter a ticket without logging in.

Create the ticket and add an image of your government photo ID which corresponds to the name on the account.

Explain in the ticket that you no longer have access to the phone to remove the authenticator.

I don’t have any issues logging in, or even doing stuff with my account. The only thing I can’t do is change the phone number or add an authenticator - the only 2 things I want to do right now.

=\

Then file a support ticket including the info I noted up above and the new phone number. This isn’t an unusual situation and blizzard can readily deal with it.

EDIT: they likely don’t need the new phone number as once they remove the current authenticator, you can just add your own.

You do need to submit a proper ticket so Billing can assist.

Sounds like you’ve been using the self-help, which is great - as long as you still have access and are being proactive. Once you don’t, Billing usually needs to get involved.

So, another way to possibly go about this? If I’m reading that you do have the phone that originally had the authenticator on it - if you open the authenticator app on that original phone, there is an option for the serial # and restore code in the … menu.

Either of those codes I think can help you get the app straight on the new phone.

Also, lesson learned to be sure to update your personal information right as it changes to help prevent headaches like this again later down the line.

If you still have the original - the serial number and restore code will add THAT authenticator to your new device.

If you still have the original AUTHENTICATOR intact - you should be able to get the serial number and restore code. The device really isn’t important. It’s the serial number/restore code combination that sets an authenticator up to be unique.

If you open the authenticator app on the old phone? On the header bar there are three dots. If you click on those, one of the options should be “Serial & Restore”

Bear with me a moment, I’ll try and screen grab here for you.

I don’t have an authenticator, I am using the phone app. If you mean something else then I don’t know what that is, sorry if this is annoying you by me not understanding and thank you for helping me and giving me quick feedback. I appreciate you.

edit: I see a restore code, how do I use it? Thank you.

Follow these steps:

I wish I knew about this before, but it still looks like no matter what I do, to re-install any authenticator app to old or new phone, I will need to remove old phone first. It’s not giving me any other options OTHER than to use a confirmation code sent to the old inaccessible phone. I can’t add/remove anything without first doing that.

Try now, Dessisec. Looks like your address may also be out of date.

Okay but now it’s needing me to have a NEW phone as well. I don’t have a phone. Please don’t judge me I never need a phone for anything and is why I don’t use the old one either.

I can’t even get the new authenticator to let me just add a code without first needing a new phone number.

edit: Why does the whole world seem to revolve around you needing a phone nowadays?

edit 2: Couldn’t add a new number if I wanted to - every time I try to access that page I get error 500 again.

Part of the authenticator system now - needs a phone.

I’m afraid we can’t get around that one.

Is there any way to just re-add the authenticator link to the old device, as if the last 30 minutes never happened? I have to go out and buy a whole new phone just to secure my wow account?

I’m confused - you still have the old authenticator?

But in any case, authenticators need phones numbers now. That was a change some time ago

The US Government offers Lifeline service through a few providers.
Includes a free, older model, phone, and some amount of text and data for free.

there are low income requirements that need to be met however.
