Can't install/update WOW Retail on Mac Studio

I can’t get wow to install. I’m on Macos with apple silicon. When I try to install wow (retail) I get an error message that something broke. It seems that I can install the base file (I can get the World of Warcraft folder to show up in my applications page), but when the blue button, that normally says play, turns from install to update, I immediately get the “something broke error”.

I’ve reformatted my Mac just to see if there was an issue there and I still get the problem. When I try to update, I usually get about 5 Agent process in the Activity Manager, and all the cores on my Mac got to near 100%.

I’ve never had this issue before. As an aside, I can download Hearthstone and other games that work on the Mac not problem.

Any ideas on what is going on or help would be very much appreciated.

Hey friend! Check this other thread.

It’s a known issue atm, seems to be an Agent issue causing issues when attempting to initialize the install. Submit a ticket if possible, the more the better our chances are of getting this fixed quickly!

Side note: if you can get your hands on an install from another mac (like from a friend) it seems you can import the install as the updates work fine. Or at least that was what a few in that thread mentioned had worked for them as a temp solution!

this is happening for me too and its pretty frustrating! Just want to play the game (Retail version).
I hope they resolve it soon!!

When I try to update not sure if this is part of your issue as well but i Getting Please try again after logging on as administrator

Same issues for me on m1 mini. No problems installing other blizzard games. Ticket hasn’t been answered yet.

I am having the same issue. I am finding that there are MANY MANY instances of Agent running…and it is the INTEL version of Agent…it should be running the ARM version.

I have a ticket in for Battle.net to fix this. Please fix ASAP as I am not able to use my subscription at all!!!

So much for my paid game time, amiright?

Updating to MacOS Sonoma Dev Build 3 and then scanning/repairing my game files via battle.net launcher has fixed the issue for me. Ugly fix, but it works.

Windows/Boot Camp is broke (audio doesn’t work) in Boot Camp, now WoW doesn’t install. Man I really wanted to play on my birthday but nah, Jesus.

And every time you attempt to install, it launches like 5-6 instances of Agent, using close to 100% CPU.

I have just bought a 2023 M2 Mac Studio and now have the same problem. Both versions of wow worked fine initially but now I am not able to update either following new patches. Normally its a security certificate issue but even this is not resolving.
Highly frustrating.

I wish i had more to offer. There has been no consistent work around that fully works. At best you can get patching to half work, where it will install new files but fail on permission repair. Sometimes that’s enough to get it working other times it’ll refuse to allow “play” until permissions are “repaired”

All i’ve heard is it’s “being looked into”. the problem is even if developers WANT to look into it, it’s often the case that their managers don’t give them enough time to because a mac only issue is the literal bottom of barrel in priority.

I’ve genuinely installed all blizzard games in A wine bottle that has game porting toolkit libraries as a backup. Currently my WoW is still running on macOS but I can’t be certain how long that’ll last. Diablo 3 was dead in water for me and no force on earth would get it to update so I already moved that to Wine with GTPk (along side diablo 2 R and Diablo 4). Apple is doing more to make blizzard games playable on macOS than blizzard is.

I’ve got a fix. Open System Settings on your Mac and go to Privacy and Security. Scroll down and click on App Management. Then click the + icon and find the Battle.net app to add it to your list of exceptions. This will allow Battle.net to install and modify apps.

Then, click on Developer Tools. Click the + icon and find the Battle.net app to add it to the list of exceptions. This will allow Battle.net to run as it doesn’t meet the local machines security system policy.

That’s it. It should be able to update and install now.

That’s effectively what the full disk access was trying to do and working for most, but actually that might fix the permission repair issue too so might be a little better.

Is an effective fix for this just to copy my World of Warcraft folder from my iMac to my new Mac Studio? Do I do this after downloading the bnet app and before trying to install anything WoW-related?

Same here, except mine was running fine on my Mac until about 3 -4 weeks ago. Now it absolutely won’t run, even after uninstall/reinstall.

I ran into this issue today. Decided to give Dragonflight another go around. The only way I could get the game installed was by restoring an older version via Time Machine, locating the install. The game initialized and updated without a hitch.

Can confirm that this didn’t work for me.

Adding my name to the list. Can’t install the game and the work arounds aren’t working. Looks like this has been an issue for months. Blizzard? Any updates?
