I want to be able to see the name and sub name under characters and NPC’s. Right now I can only get full info if I tooltip and I want to be able to just look at characters. I’ve gone through the interface and display settings but no luck. Any help much appreciated!
I’m at work right now, so don’t have client access, but there should be an option under interface in the options menu called names. There should be a npc header option that allows you to turn on all npc names, or only show relevant npc names. It should be in the same options menu that allows you to show life bars as well.
If you open your main menu (Esc key by default) click on Interface and then “Names”. You’ll want to check any name you want visible. There is also a drop down for various types of NPCs.
I put in there all NPC’s but still no sub names are appearing. I tried disabling all mods and that didn’t help, and I had the game repair all of the files. So frustrating not to be able to see what the NPC’s are!!!
Perhaps I’m not understanding what you mean by “sub name”, Mayveena. There is some information that is only available in the tooltip. The NPC should otherwise show its name, and if it is a vendor, a trainer, etc…

I wish I could upload images which would easily explain it. My other character on another server does not have this issue. So let’s say there’s a Mining Trainer. This character only shows the Mining Trainer’s name, I have no idea what the NPC does unless I tooltip it. On my other character that’s working properly it shows the name and underneath the name it shows “Mining Trainer”. I want both characters to show “Mining Trainer”.
I know you said you completed a repair and that you disabled your addons but have you tried a simple UI reset by deleting or renaming the WTF, Interface and Cache folders?
Assuming both characters are looking at the same NPC and the NPC itself should show that information (i.e. it could be a bug that it isn’t), I’d give that a try.

Is the character in question just using nameplates for friendly NPCs? That won’t show their full information.

That very well may be it, Kyzera. That is the only time I can think where you’d see the NPC’s name but not any kind of title they may have.
Mayveena, check if you have name plates on. The default for toggling nameplates on/off should be Control - V For all. Friendly only should be Shift - V.

Just wanted to add that there is a script that can allow friendly player nameplates to still work and disable the friendly NPC nameplates.

Yep! I was using V, not control V. Control V worked. Whew!!!
