one of my alts (just 1 single alt) when I log in to it, it says “there is a character with this name already” (or something like that) and will not let me play the alt. Very confused.
Stay logged off that alt for roughly 30 minutes. The server still recognizes you online likely after a disconnect and will force it offline roughly around that time frame.
You should be able to log back in after that.

Usually clears up on it’s own, once the server recognizes that character is not actually connected.
