Modern Warfare earned over $600 million within its first three days of release, making it the highest-selling game in the franchise during the current console generation and breaking several sales records, including the best digital opening in Activision’s history, the most digital copies sold for a game in three days on PlayStation 4, and the best Call of Duty launch on PC.[52][53] In Japan, it was released in the top 20 video games chart with 117,670 copies sold in the first week.[54] On December 18, 2019, Activision confirmed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has earned over $1 billion in revenue.[55]

600 million in 3 days? In order for Shadowlands ($30 base) to compete with that there would have to be over 15 million copies sold (600,000,000 / 30) but that’s of course not factoring in game time or services. In order for SL to make 100 million in the 2 years it will be current there would have to be a constant 6.6 million subscribers (@14.95 each).

aussies were paying like $10USD and are now paying around $15USD like everyone else and that is somehow the worst thing ever.

Right, and Canada recently started heavily taxing electronic services like Netflix, so we are mad at Blizz for tax reasons?

essentially. people in different states in america pay taxes on services including tokens. whereas where i live i don’t pay taxes on any of those things. or any time i buy something from a store. it’s not blizz’s fault that the taxes in your area are what they are. it’s like people expect blizz to eat those taxes?

I’m confused…are you blaming Blizzard for the price hike? Or your country’s government due to VAT and digital taxes? Because those two entities have nothing to do with each other…

CaD compared to the dollar. CaD (canada dollar) is worth less than the u.s dollar. That’s exchange rates.

Blizzard bad

The same. Theirs was changed based on exchange rate. I haven’t looked but I would imagine Canada’s increase is a (new) tax on digital goods and for whatever reason a direct subscription isn’t considered to be one (yet).

I don’t pay super close attention to this, but pretty sure the driving reason other countries sub prices increase is because of exchange rate and taxes and the such.

And some Americans pay more because their state charges tax on digital purchases. So the guy you replied to just isn’t educated on the matter.

Just found out.

Just unsubbed. Will be gone after Xmas.

Thank goodness I did not buy Shadowlands!

Looking at the Blizzard store the whole pricing system is weird.

There’s the subscription plan that will give you 30 days of play time and you can buy 30 days of play time as a single item in the store.

The first of those for me is $18.99 while the second is $21.99 for seemingly no reason despite being literally the same thing. Also of note is that the second one is not the game token you can trade for in-game gold which is $25.

Additionally I can’t find anything about that $18.99 increasing despite that it’s been that cost for years ever since they set it there to compensate for the conversion between dollars(I used to actually pay $14.99 CAD).

Also worth noting is that $21.99 is a 15% price increase, which is 3x what Canada’s federal tax rate is so that’s not just compensating for taxes.

It just doesn’t make sense to me that it’s only game time and not the subscription. Was it like that in Australia too?

I suspect they’re testing the waters for a global raise of the subscription + game time + WoW token.

I guess they found the limit to which they can squeeze out cash from Hearthstone whales and are coming for World of Warcraft next. :man_shrugging:

Overwatch? Diablo? Any of that ring a bell?

Buying a sub only applies to your own account. Buying the WOW-Token is an in-game item that can be used in-game to give you or any other account 30 days of game time. The reason why it costs more is that it can be sold on the AH for gold…so there is an added premium for that added functionality and convenience.

You do understand the difference between the US dollar and the Canadian dollar don’t you?

As I already noted, the game time I’m talking about is not the WoW token which is even more expensive at $25.

The $21.99 game time is not able to be traded for gold and is not an in-game item.

As of today, the Canadian Dollar equals 78¢ US. So, let’s do some quick math: Based on a regular monthly fee of $14.99 USD, the Canadian equivalent would be $19.03. So, if it’s been raised to anything higher than this amount, it might seen as excessive…

What I mean is that the dollar is the reserve currency of the world right now.

So the US can export it’s inflation as long as countries continue to trade using US dollars.

Canada however can not export it’s inflation in the same way.

So what you’re saying is they’re extorting us?
