Having an item level requirement to queue for cataclysm normal dungeons makes little sense since heirlooms work until level 85. Makes it really annoying to have to take gear we don’t really need in order to queue.

Just wear a BoE, heirlooms have an Ilvl of 1.

Only 2 of the pieces are 85, you should have replaced the 80’s by then, and you can just replace the 2 85 pieces that are left other with either greens or pvp blues from AH.
Just keep a random green in your bags for the heirloom slots, as long as you can equip it even if it isn’t the right armor type it will count toward your ilevel

Its due to the somewhat silly massive increase in ilvl from cata gear and the content being scaled for that gear.
If you’re a fresh level 80 caster in northrend greens and no heirlooms those first quests can actually be tough. As you’re fighting mobs scaled to ilvl 270 when your ilvl is gonna be around 120.
If thats your tank theyre getting 1-2 shot by bosses
