Can we finally just drop the race/class "lore restriction" pretense?

Don’t know, I benched my Kul’tiran warrior because of missing sounds and animations.

Lets just get rid of races and make every character a grey blob and get rid of classes all together and everyone can just cast generic balls of energy that all do exactly the same thing and then everyone can be everything all the time. Don’t even need lore at all anymore just do away with stories and quests and all our grey blobs will just attack other grey blobs but this time with red name plates, sounds like so much fun!

The lore isn’t restricted, but what you can make in game is, and it should be else it is no longer WoW

Ha! I’m with you on the Gnomes! Everyone knows that Goblins and Vulpera are the best tiny races! ,

there were more race/class pairings in vanilla than the rts, races having access to more classes has been in the franchise from the very first time it switched formats. lore purists out here being like ‘wah the divisions are what make the franchise’ don’t know the lore themselves and have no argument beyond ‘i just don’t like it’

Lore stating that the entirety of one race can’t be one thing is bad writing.

Tauren are inherently a nomadic Druidic and Shamanistic race that travel in packs/tribes. That makes sense, great story telling. But to say that there are no warlocks is bad story telling. A race is not a hive mind, there will be outliers. And perhaps they will be shunned or shamed for going against their culture’s traditions. So instead of saying there are no Tauren Warlocks it’s better to ask yourself what would a Tauren Warlock look like? They would likely be shamed from their tribe. Perhaps the Tauren would accept the player character out of necessity but there are harsh whispers and stares when they walk by? Perhaps people look the other way or fear them out of superstition.

What would a Goblin druid look like? Perhaps instead of inventing for greed, they like to spend their time inventing on devices that help Nature, like wind turbines and solar panel devices. The other goblins laugh and call them crazy, but your Goblin doesn’t care. Maybe as a child they were saved by a wolf or some other animal and that changed their outlook on Nature. When they saw that their inventions were spilling oil into their forests and destroying their homes your Goblin couldn’t live like that anymore.

That should be up to the player to roleplay, in the roleplaying game.

Baldur’s gate (based on Dungeons and Dragons) does this beautifully.

You can pick a race or a class that might not make a lot of sense, and the game will adapt it’s story on the fact that it’s uncommon. Drows are typically inherently an evil race who revel in killing and worship the spider goddess. But you can be a Priest (Cleric) Drow who escaped and has turned their life over to the Goddess of Light Selune. Now they devote their time to healing people. The game will respect your choice and even have people treat you with suspicion based on your race.

My previous comment is perfect for social taboo’s and why they aren’t valid reasons.

Races aren’t hive minds, a race may value shamanistic and druidic ideology like Tauren, but that doesn’t mean WArlocks shouldn’t exist. You have to ask yourself what that would look like from a roleplay perspective.

I can see a Warlock Tauren being tolerated because they’re valuable and strong, but behind closed doors people whisper about them or judge them, or maybe they get glares walking down the streets of thunder bluff.

I don’t expect to see that implemented in the game but wouldn’t it be wonderful if our race and our class were mentioned more in game? Legion was a dream come true for this.

Like there’s a quest in Pandaria where the Goblins are ranting about the druids being up their butts, meanwhile here I am a druid. An additional text saying “Oh but uhh… you’re cool Shartah!” Would add WONDERS to immersing me in the game.

They did a few things like that in Shadowlands. Huln Highmountain specifically called out to me for my antlers and recognized me as one of his people, and there was special dialogue option to talk about our shared heritage and culture.

So stuff like that. Maybe if a warlock Tauren asks a guard for help in Thunderbluff they say “You tread a very dark and dangerous path Warlock. Speak your business and move on quickly. Thunderbluff is not very welcoming to your kind.” This would make you feel like you selecting Tauren/Lock actually MATTERED, and you can feel the tension.

Sorry for the incoherent rambling, hopefully it made sense.

TLDR, Race and Class should come up more in the world and while questing.

Forgot that Illidan was the only Demon Hunter with a teaching degree. It’s too bad he left and that every other Demon Hunter eats crayons so they don’t know how to do anything.

Pretty grim, tbh.

There’s a bit of this in Neverwinter Nights 2 as well. When you first meet Neeshka the Tiefling as any other race, she just comments on how suspicious people are of her race. But, if you’re a Drow, her dialogue changes to be like - “You know all about that, too.”

Well when part of the on the job training involves giving yourself a fel lobotomy things happen.

I prefer more lore restricted classs. Every class = Every race is generic and boring.

I wish they’d do every race = every class sooner. It should all be open.

Transmog should be open too. All armor types for all classes.

Gnome druids with Pallas Cat form, Honey Badger (bear) form etc.

If you think that would stop me you are not prepared

I disagree Draenei Warlocks are not lore breaking but they are abominations for making that choice. Lore wise they should be shunned from their fellow Draenei. What does break lore are Mag’har warlocks because of how fel energy effects Orcs. They should not be brown but green, having a green option or brown/green option for them would help.

Now I do have a whole post on why I think forsaken Druids would work and can go into that reason as well.

Fair! But it makes the point (I hope) I was trying to make. The lore of Demon Hunters is dark and tragic and heroic all at same time. The novel Illidan is, imho, the best WoW novel written to date. You had to be mad to even seek out Illidan; it was an act of desperation for those who’d lost everything. They really did sacrifice everything. It wouldn’t make much sense for any character to take those risks today, but pivoting to say “oh that all changed, it’s easy now”, just because someone thinks a particular race would look cool, cheapens the story that went before.

Sometimes less can be more. Another sequel does not always make the story better. Sometimes better to leave it how it was on a high note.

Pretty sure Ion was very specific about that lore was important and needs to make sense for Paladin, Druids and Shaman race expansion (not for all) and that certain races would never make sense for those classes so yeah.

There are 2 types of players.

One prefers structure and rules to allow for an immersive believable experience, even in a magical fictional world.

The other doesn’t like to be to told what to do, they want to play dress up with no restrictions.

You can’t have both.

Can we stop making these threads every week? Less homogenization is good. We don’t need Undead Shamans and druids. Druids are about life. Forsaken are about decay and death. It doesn’t work.

I did read that novel and it was pretty good for a wow novel. Honestly Steven Erikson has ruined all other fantasy authors for me.

But the additional back story was invaluable.

I had my own convoluted class fiction for establishing any race dh years ago via drust magic lol - but I love the idea of your suggestion.
