Koala’s aren’t bears.
Why do people think that they are?
Koala’s aren’t bears.
Why do people think that they are?
Flying foxes aren’t actual foxes either. Both that and koala bear is a colloquial name.
Pretty sure Blizz has confirmed that we have, indeed, killed each of those Old Gods that we fought.
You’re correct. They said it at Blizzcon, and it gets stated ingame during the Ny’alotha epilogue.
I think you’re overestimating the old gods, while underestimating the player characters.
I agree entirely with that statement.
I was surprised how well, for example, the Silithid held up in Classic. Starts off as a weird thing you encounter early on nobody seems to sure about and evolves into raiding their foreboding, twitching nightmare hives. There’s a ‘This is very different and very bad’ feel to them that escalates perfectly to Lovecraftian madness. Actually getting to fight C’Thun at the end of it all kinda ruined it but otherwise 10/10.
But that’s the best they ever did and I wonder how much of their restraint was due to tech or budget restraints of the era. Compare that to G’hunn. He was brand new and could’ve been capable of whatever they wanted. But we figure out what his deal is through Zandalar’s questline and kill the prolapsed butt monster within a month or two.
Now from what I’ve seen of the PTR they are doing some stuff I really like with N’Zoth but he’ll be sorted soon enough.
yes we killed them but as stated in chronicles when they die they move to another realm outside the shadow realm like demons who can come back unless killed inside the realm they belong
This. I still recall doing quests in Feralas and Tanaris that introduce the Silithid; I had seen elementals, pirates, Naga… but the giant bug creatures and their hives made me feel absolutely dwarfed in power and scale by comparison.
Vanilla had a way of slowly introducing antagonists (the Defias, the Scourge) over many zones and levels so that the story felt progressive in grandeur.
Except that we don’t call them Koala bears in Australia. So it isn’t really that colloquial.
They started all the way back in the Barrens, then having an increasingly large presence in zones from there to Silithus, with the hives becoming bigger and more nightmarish until you get to the living purple carpet with swarms filling the air and skyscraper-sized twitching bone tendrils.
Ever since then, the only good portrayal of the Old Gods or their servants has been in text. We’ll never get to see the “twisting flesh-banners of N’Zoth” that got brought up in Dragon Soul for example.
Different places in the world have different colloquial names for different species.
The term koala bear originates from early English speaking settlers of Australia who mistook koalas for miniature bears. Maybe it isn’t used in Australia anymore but it is still widely used elsewhere in the world.
By this point, at least in the U.S., it is pretty common knowledge that koala bears aren’t really bears. The term is still used because it is what people are used to saying and because koalas remind people of the Teddy Bear.
So basically it would be incorrect to say koala bears are real bears. But it isn’t wrong to call them koala bears because that is how a great many people refer to them. Similar to flying foxes or red pandas who are not foxes or pandas respectively.
You know, I actually had the same thoughts about N’Zoth and Nyalotha before 8.3 was even announced. As an avid Lovecraft fan, I felt like it would be cheap and disappointing to have to fight N’Zoth and actually win. IMO doing the old gods right would include them being titanic, writhing forces, that we as the character would have no hope of defeating. I actually love the Gift / Eye of N’Zoth and that we can choose to follow N’Zoth. I’m getting set up to be disappointed when the player base smacks him in the face and we’re left without our tentacley dark overlord. I think the whole value of the Gift / Eye of N’Zoth and our choice to support him will be nullified if we are instead to simply experience some different dialogue and ultimately end up serving no one. To summarize, I love the idea that the old gods would be so titanic and unimaginable that many would serve them out of fear and panic so much as cultist like devotion. Could create a new faction, or serve as the platform to remove factions. Could also introduce more player agency and choices of morality. Personally, my character will always support the old gods, for power, glory, and also probably b/c of fear too.
