Nobody is ignoring meaning. We are telling you that you are not entitled to force your communication choices onto private companies who have their reasons for the rules.
I have tried to explain the legal reasons, beyond just the “be nice” reasons.
Do what you want with your house an your spaces. That is YOUR right.
My support for private property rights means I don’t think you are entitled to force them to change their policies. You can either choose to use that private property service or not. If you don’t like it, don’t go there.
This is like walking into a private club with a dress code, reading the rules, agreeing to the rules, paying a membership fee - then thinking you are entitled to wear whatever you want because muh freedom. What? no. If you don’t like the dress code don’t join the club.
You have 100% free speech rights to criticize your govt - but you don’t have the right to tell me (or any other private space) how to run things. Well, you can have an opinion, but don’t expect them to change because of it. Esp when the reasons behind it are legal protection issues.
I said I taught there, not that I was of any faith. Because I am not. I was not raised religious, never went to church on my own, never baptized, never anything. Still not. There is a reason I let the Warhammer kids use my room.
You are looking for reasons to lump me into some category that makes you feel that there is a reason I support private property rights.
There is no other reason - you have your private property rights and so does Blizzard. If you don’t like it, leave. Just like if i don’t like the rules at your house, I leave.
I am pretty anti authority. I am also anti - people showing up and trying to force their changes onto some other private space which is what you want to do. You are just as bad when you don’t respect private property rights.
You see, I am not religious, but I did not accept a job at their school and did not think I could march in and tell them that I was entitled to do things my way (even if I thought my way was better).
yes, you have truly presented yourself as anti authority in this thread >.>
i dont believe you. i am lumping you in with other authoritarians. because that is how you have acted. if you dont like that classification, then acknowledge the FACT that moderation and censorship are well and truly out of hand in the modern era. including, but certainly not limited to, here.
If you think not being able to swear in a video game, on private property, after agreeing to those rules is somehow “censorship” I just don’t know what to tell you.
You have never seen real censorship because so far in the US we have never had it.
This is like a kid being upset they have rules to follow at home and a parent reminding them that this is their house - that the kid can do what they want in their own house.
The GOVT shall not tell me what I can say, however I shall not infringe on the private property rights of others.
You don’t get to demand your own rights then also demand that you take away the private property rights of others.
Not everyone does. First there is the issue of the personality trait agreeable vs disagreeable. For people who are agreeable being polite comes naturally, for someone like myself who is in the top 1% of disagreeable people I tend to not care in the slightest about peoples feelings. In the words of Christopher Hitchens:
“If someone tells me that I’ve hurt their feelings, I say, ‘I’m still waiting to hear what your point is.’
In this country, I’ve been told, ‘That’s offensive’ as if those two words constitute an argument or a comment. Not to me they don’t.
Second we have the issue of Authoritarian vs Totalitarianism. To someone like myself it makes no sense to try to dictate the thoughts ideas and expressions of others no matter how much I might disagree or dislike them when each person has the ability to walk away or in game put on filters so they are not exposed to it. People trying to control my expression of ideas is one of the most authoritarian things a society can do and I for one despise it and will speak out any time I see it.
I don’t need to conform to your values, ideas, or beliefs, they are yours not mine. Why can’t we each just go about our own lives without the need to interact at all instead of having to have people put their nose in my business.
But this of course isn’t surprising as a recent study in DEI has shown that it increases authoritarian tendencies as well as hostility. My hope is we can go back to real tolerance and not swing to more authoritarian ideology from the political right as well as left. We really need to go back as a society to saying mind your own damn business.
This is a no true Scotsman fallacy.
What is real censorship because we have seen Youtube ban accounts of people who questioned the 2020 election. We had the FBI put pressure on social media accounts to cancel anyone including those with medical degrees that had studies to back up what they were saying who questioned the jab or if everyone should get it. Or the people canceled because they questioned what having people stay home for almost a year would do to the economy. You had jobs including the military that fired people for making a personal medical decision which is protected under our constitution. You have google burying stories that they don’t like such as the Hunter laptop story. And of course you can be canceled from pretty much anywhere and everywhere for expressing what are simple scientific facts, hell at this point scientists themselves are afraid to admit this as is evident with Neil deGrasse Tyson recent talk with Bill Maher.
“I have a dream.” That one day, every person in this nation will control their OWN destiny. A land of the TRULY free, dammit. A nation of ACTION, not words. Ruled by STRENGTH, not committee. Where the law changes to suit the individual, not the other way around. Where power and justice are back where they belong: in the hands of the people! Where every man is free to think – to act – for himself!
No, you don’t. Your private messages are not policed actively by Blizzard. They don’t go looking for violations, yet. There is no AI bot reading our texts. Someone has to report you.
Those paying customers who report also count so when they report things it will be reviewed - because they pay for that. Public chat and group areas in WoW are the ones with strangers where being polite is best. Save the colorful stuff for private chats/groups where your friends share your humor and won’t report you.
Um, you are talking about the Government and laws.
The forums have nothing to do with that, nor does your house or the rules in it. Two very very different things. We can express our views about WoW, but we can’t use profanity and stuff to do it.
I am not really fully awake but I think we are on the same page there. Probably. I did not get much sleep
This is not true. I have had whispers from individuals that trigger the offensive message prompt. I did not report them and no one else sees them.
The government does play a significant role in what corporations can and can’t censor, thanks to Section 230. While this has often been overlooked, the new administration is pushing for radical changes. Under these shifts, corporations will no longer be able to censor content freely while avoiding lawsuits.
These companies will face a choice:
Declare themselves a utility, meaning they can’t moderate content but remain shielded from legal liability.
Declare themselves a publisher, allowing them to moderate content as they see fit but holding them legally responsible for what appears on their platforms.
It’s a no-brainer which option most companies will choose—retaining liability protection is far more appealing than exposing themselves to endless lawsuits.
As a follow-up, it strikes me as odd that some people seem perfectly fine with limiting the freedoms of individuals, real, living people with thoughts, beliefs, and the capacity to be offended, while granting the maximum possible freedoms to corporations, which are, at the end of the day, just legal entities without feelings to hurt. Why prioritize the rights of a faceless company over the rights of actual individuals?
It is not actively scanning and reporting. It is a filter with an automated warning that activates when you get incoming text. Like a call screening thing. It is not actively monitoring all your chats in real time and reporting.
I don’t think you understand Section 230 at all. Removal of it means that online platforms can be sued for anything said on their platform - even if it is against their platform rules. Anything.
It means that platforms are going to shut down open communications and anything posted would have to be reviewed and approved first. That would be the only way to avoid lawsuits.
Beware what you wish for.
Some of us know what freedom of speech is - the freedom to speak up against your govt without fear of going to jail.
We also understand, and want, private property rights. I don’t want the govt to be able to tell a restaurant, shop keeper, or game company what rules and standards they have to set on their own property (barring blatantly illegal discrimination).
Those private property rights are extremely important and they apply to every single one of us that owns property, owns a business, or hopes to.
Not being able to curse in a video game - that you read the rules and joined, is not a violation of our freedoms.
what is this even about anymore lol. is it ppl wanna cuss each other
w/o repercussion or what? like holy christ its been 2 days and yall still
going at it lol. like go cook, be w/ ur family tf.
i see a strong parallel between modern corporations and the gods of yore. all knowing, all seeing, intangible entities that somehow dictate every facet of human life despite being naught but a figment of our imagination.
people worship brands the same way they used to worship deities. faith and loyalty over reason and freedom.
