The new UI in WoW is nice and super flexible, but I still prefer the classic look from the older days of the game. There’s an addon that does a great job bringing that back, but it would be awesome if Blizzard made it a built-in option.
Just a toggle to switch between the modern UI and a classic one would be perfect. No need for extra setup or addons—just simple and clean.
Would love to see this in TWW. Anyone else hoping for the same?
I see your point, but from a business angle, this could really influence whether some players stick with the game—especially if they don’t know about the addon. I only found out about it randomly through a stream, and honestly, if I hadn’t, I might’ve been put off from jumping into retail altogether. Perhaps Blizzard could advertise the addon more, because I’ve talked to plenty of people who also don’t like the new interface. The addon is actually down right now for maintenance, so I’m not even logging on until it’s back up.
I checked it out to see how it holds up, and unfortunately, it doesn’t replicate the original UI in the same way. While some elements are positioned similarly, it completely misses the classic UI vibe that many of us are looking for/talking about here. It fundamentally changes how the game feels, especially for longtime WoW fans like us. Could a Blizzard rep please chime in with a blue post to clarify the intent behind these changes or if any adjustments are being considered?
Haha yeah, sometimes it really is a case of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!’ Just thought I’d toss it out there - I’ve run into a bunch of folks who straight up avoid the game because of it. Could be a win-win for both Blizzard and players if they gave it a second look. /shrug
I’ve been playing since 2004, so long time fan as well but sometimes you just have to work with the cards you are dealt.
Anyone who is avoiding playing the game because of this was really just looking for an excuse not to play. I have to be honest, I am not sure I’ve ever run into “a bunch of folks” who dug their heals in about the interface and won’t play or even mentioned it outside of the introduction at first…especially since the one the they provide under the classic pre-set layout is almost identical to the old interface.
Blizzard adds the most basic and widely used features needed for the general playerbase.
For example: Think of the new CD tracker. Does it suck? Yes. But if you don’t know about addons it is awesome!
More importantly it provides addon authors with an officially supported and maintained API of CD tracking they can use anywhere. This means, soon enough, addons will exploit this new API to make addons that YOU want. Not only will WeakAuras get better, but ALL addons tracking any CD will get batter.
So if you want a “Classic” UI; find one that an addon author maintains and put in a bug report or request! You get to talk to the ACTUAL developer! Your ideas are heard, often in near real time!
The addon I’m referring to in my original post is ClassicUI. It does exactly what we’ve been discussing. The only downside is that if it goes down for maintenance or the developer stops updating it, it’s essentially gone, and there’s no official fallback. I still firmly believe that many players won’t engage with the game without it. Personally, I couldn’t get into retail at all until I found this addon—it completely changed the experience and finally made the game enjoyable for me.
UI design plays a huge role in how players connect with a game, and ClassicUI offers a familiar, comfortable interface that many longtime fans prefer. When an unofficial addon dramatically improves the experience for a significant portion of the player base, it really highlights a gap in the official offering. From a business standpoint, supporting or integrating something like this just makes sense—it lowers the barrier to entry for returning players and broadens the game’s appeal.
It probably wouldn’t require major development effort, and it would show that the developers are listening to the community’s needs. Just my honest opinion, but I think it’s a small change that could have a big impact.
I for one won’t play any more if I can’t use ELVUI. It is a far better and more flexible interface even ‘out of the box’. I literally cannot play with that 2004 nonsense they call a modern UI
