Building a PC for high FPS 1440p

hello everyone,

I really want to build a new PC, it will be primarily for WoW, but playing other games would be nice as well.

I would mainly use this PC to play WoW, but I also play Halo, and may get some Playstation games as well. I already have a 1440p monitor but am planning on upgrading it to a 144hz one. I am open to all suggestions, be it AMD or Intel. Thank you all.

The clear choice right now is to go with an AMD X3D CPU. Not all games will benefit equally from the large L3 cache that these X3D CPUs have, however, WoW is one of the games that benefits tremendously, to the extent that it simply doesn’t make sense to get anything else if WoW is your main game.

If you are on a limited budget, then I would recommend a 5700X3D combined with a B450 or B550 motherboard, and some cheap DDR4.

If you have more money to spend, then get a 9800X3D with pretty much any AM5 motherboard (B650, X670, X670E, X870, X870E, etc) and some DDR5 6000Mhz CL30.

Thank you for that info! definitely looking at the 5700x3D. What GPU would you recommend to pair with it?

That’s really a matter of budget. But absent of that, I usually recomend the “4070 Ti Super”. The branding is unfortunately a bit confusing, but in order of performance you have the 4070, the 4070 Super, the 4070 Ti, and finally the 4070 Ti Super. The “4070 Ti Super” is actually based on the 4080, while the others are not. Because the “4070 Ti Super” is based on the 4080, it has 16GB of VRam like the 4080, which should give the card much more longevity.

But that’s assuming it’s within your budget.

If you “want to build a new PC” why are you using a dead platform? You would be better off with an AMD 7600x (or better) which would give you similar gaming CPU performance as the 5700X3D and a more modern AMD5 platform. You can grab a 7800X3D or 9800X3D down the road if initial cost is an issue. 5700X3D makes sense if you already have an AMD 4 platform and just want to drop in a CPU upgrade.

The only thing on the Intel side that makes any current sense would be a heavily discounted 14600k build but that’s not happening.

If you’re willing to spend a little more on high quality Parts I’ve got a comprehensive list for you.

  • CPU: 9800X3D
  • GPU: RTX 4080 or 7900XT/7900XTX (whichever you can get a better deal on)
  • Motherboard: Asus or MSI x670E or x870E just make sure it has a q code reader
  • PSU: Seasonic Vertex GX 1000w (True ATX 3.0 and PCIze 5.0 capable. Has a Native 12VHPWR Port)
  • CPU Cooler: any 280 or 360 AIO (I personally prefer the Rog products but they come at a severe price premium)
  • Ram: G.skill 6000mhz CL30
  • Case Antec Performance F1 (it’s a full tower and it’s a dream to work in)

If you would like more specifics on any of these parts just quote me and I’ll reply.

The really good news for you is Black Friday AKA Cyber Monday is right around the corner

As an owner of a 7900 XT, it’s overkill for WoW on the AMD side.

For 1440p, save your money and go for a 7800 XT or 7900 GRE. On Nvidia, I’d opt for the 4070 Ti at most, and paying that much for a GPU in this game, where Ray Tracing is questionable at best for the general performance hit, is not something I’d recommend.

A 4080-class GPU this generation is not worth the abaurd price with the next wave on the horizon.

OP specified he wants to be able to play other games.

There’s a difference between a GPU being able to handle a game and the game being a pleasant gaming experience.

I listed the GPUs that will give him a pleasant gaming experience in other games @1440p

Probably don’t list a $900 and $1200 4k GPU for the 1440p experience. Outside of RT, there is no reason to pay that much if 144 FPS is his target. In hindsight, I should’ve gotten a GRE and saved $150+, since I wouldn’t have been dogged for performance at all.

7900XT is $600+ which varies depending on where you get it from. 7900XTX is $700+ depending on where you get it from.

Also keep in mind the Black Friday and Cyber Monday is right around the corner. The gpus I listed are all 1440p high refresh rate GPS again there’s a difference between being able to handle game and a pleasant gaming experience.

Also games are getting more and more demanding if you’re doing a new build now you want something that’s going to be able to handle the latest games. Including games that have yet to be released. A game like Star Wars Outlaws requires pretty much the gpus I listed for a good gaming experience @1440p

If you’re planning to permanently stay on a 100hz monitor you’re right it really doesn’t matter but once you start looking at 160 to 200hz that’s a different story.

So if you were doing a brand new rig today why not do something that you can eventually upgrade your monitor on and not have to upgrade your system. This is why I never suggest the bare minimum to anyone doing a brand new rig. Because when you do their rig basically becomes invalid 90 days down the road.

Bottom line here if you’re going to spend money get your money’s worth and get the most bang for your buck

it’s not a bad PSU but CWT & a better performing platform sold under several brands and superflower has some hard to beat ATX 3.x options.
Also, there is no budget from the OP other than a 5700X3D mention as a CPU so perhaps they are looking at a more modest build

that’s more of a quantitative experience than qualitative without knowledge of what the user’s preference of experience is . Solo questing is going to be different than world bosses and raids

You are completely right. As usual. I’m always pretty much in agreement with the advice you give around here but when the app mentioned they wanted to play other games they didn’t specify what types of games those are.

If they are AAA titles and they want to be able to use their PC as a console then my suggestion above is valid. If it’s a bunch of games like wow that are not very demanding on GPU then my suggestion above is a bit Overkill

did you grab a 9800X3D? If so, how’s life with it compared to the 7800X3D?

I was never on a 7800x3D because outside of gaming it doesn’t meet my needs. Im on a the 7950x3D. Yes I have full plans to move to the 9950X3D the moment it’s released.

Currently with the 7950x3d, in the Bios I have the CPU set to frequency cores preferred. I use process lasso to isolate my games to CCD0. So I have 8 cores fully dedicated to my game. The other eight cores handle all my background task while gaming.

no issues with MS scheduler so far?

Don’t use it it’s disabled. Game Bar is completely disabled.

When gaming my system is treated as having two 8-core CPUs one for the game and one for everything else.

Outside of gaming the CPU performs like the 7950x 16 core CPU

This video should explain it better and it’s how I currently use my CPU. More so towards the end of the video.

There’s a MicroCenter special for the 7600x3d it’s a pretty powerful variant of the X3D for budget minded people. I recommend it highly and for a budget GPU look at what AMD has to offer if you don’t care about ray tracing on other games (wow doesn’t care about the gpu, the CPU does the heavy lifting)

I’d like to echo this. My daughter’s 5700x3d and rx7700xt runs WoW great @1440p.
