Building a better queue

Bottom Line Up Front – Continuous Queue that persists while on another realm.

Okay, so ideally the player base would magically get spread across the servers and there’d be no queue at all, but we haven’t discovered that corner of the multiverse yet so I’m here to propose an alternative solution that won’t erase the problem, but will at least address some of the problem.

How difficult would it be to enable a queue that remains active while you are playing on another realm? For example, I jump online and the Benediction queue is 7200 players. While I await my turn, I play on another server and my spot in the queue continues to tick down. Once it reaches 100 players (or something around that) I get a pop-up telling me that my spot is coming up and asking if I’d like to log out and prepare for the last few seconds/minutes to whittle away. If I’m content to stay on the other realm at that point, I can forfeit my spot in line. Otherwise, I can be logged out of the other realm, and retake my waiting position.

Again, this doesn’t “fix” the problem, but a big part of why people don’t like the queue is simply because it doesn’t let them play the game AT ALL if they want to stand in line. Now, you can use this time to test out the other realms and see if their player base, economy, etc would serve as a suitable destination for your characters, friends, or even entire guilds.

I know there will be some who tear the idea apart, or simply hate on it because that’s what they do, and I’m fine with it. But if this is something that could be accomplished without extensive game redesign, I think it’s worth considering. They want players to consider other realms, and part of knowing if you want to play on a realm… is playing on the realm! With my proposal, we can accomplish this task, but without completely omitting our desire to play on our original realms.

Thoughts? Obvious problems I’ve overlooked? Hugs?

Thank you for reading and have a great day.

This would turn the queues into even larger, wouldn’t they, as everyone would queue and wait for their precious Grobb turn as they do something else? Far fewer would leave

Potentially, but when the queues are already in the 3000+ range, I imagine a ton of people simply log into the queue and then walk away to do something else, basically producing the same end result. Or I know many log in remotely to save time. People are already waiting in droves to log in, and Blizzard wants them to consider a different server. I envision this as a way to promote that research. But maybe it’s wishful thinking.

We won’t fix the queues until RDF is added.

Hmm. Well thank you for your input!

if you make the queue more comfortable, more people will stay queued longer. you’ll create quadratic time…

I agree with the logic, but unfortunately I don’t think your average WoW player operates primarily on logic. We tend to become highly devoted to our characters, and whether it’s 20 minutes, or 4 hours, I imagine most of us are going to wait for that opportunity over the alternative. This simply allows them to continue playing the game they love rather than some other activity to simply pass the time.

But I’m open-minded, so you may be right. It’s a valid point.
