I’m hoping they will buff Prot Warrior. Even just a teenie tiny little buff will help. It’s so fun to play and I know it’s viable but I also know the community will be super down on because it’s not the “best” tank.
I think it’s doin alright, granted we’re not actually in Cata content yet, and by that I mean past 80.
But honestly, a skilled prot warrior would still do better than the worst player playing the best tank. The differences I don’t imagine are so big that you’d be outright banned for playing it.
All that said though, I still wouldn’t say no to a buff lmao.

During Cata, Blizzard ended up having to nerf warriors because critical block ended up scaling too well. Warriors being the worst tank puts them in a bad place for pugging. But, warriors can do all of the content. Buffing warriors just puts prot pallies in the same place as warriors. Then you have prot pallies asking for a buff to become better.
The answer isn’t to buff warriors but to nerf blood DKs. They’re too far ahead of the other tanks.
They just need to make the warrior’s debuffs apply passively through threat generating abilities rather than taking extra GCDs just to debuff boss while getting snap threat.
Warriors are hands down the best physical damage mitigation tanks though with crit block.
Sadly, this is not true because Blood DKs are just 150% better then the rest of the Tanks. Many Raid groups will opt to bring 1 Blood DK instead of 2 other Tanks like Prots or Bear.
So this is the expansion where Blood DK just Solo’s. You can slot a Feral in the off tank spot for some fights and just have a better group. If the group ever dies then the Blood DK can just Solo the rest of the fight.
Every other Tanks could use some buffs just cause they aren’t even remotely in the vincinity of Blood DK’s. Everyone knows this so for Prot’s it will be difficult to find some groups cause you aren’t needed. Actually less tanks are needed in general cause of the above problem.
Again Prot’s aren’t terrible it’s just 1 Blood DK is better than everyone else by such a large margin they are playing a different game. So people will just use them and only them.
I’d offer this change
- Impending Victory talent now lets you use Victory Rush at any time. 50% Proc chance off Devastates.
- Prot likely needs 5% more HP too.
- Sundering glyph now reduces Devastate by 50% rage as well.
This now would give Prot sustain and make them more desirable and competitive. Prot is somewhat squishy and has 1 shot problems. Especially compared to the God Tank that has no problems once it gets blue gear.
PS - Enrage Regen works at any time. Requiring the enrage mechanic is just bad and why it was removed latter. Just a QoL on this one.
I don’t like nerfing though especially in a remake. I rather buff every other Tank. Every other Tank besides Blood can get some nice buffs. It’s the fun route to take. Reason is many are looking forward to playing OP Blood DK’s so let them have their fun. Just buff others too. So they have fun.
You’re spending a whole lot of energy on overhyping blood DK.
You are spending a lot of energy trying to disprove historical facts. The other Tanks desperately could use some love otherwise History repeats itself.
I will say this though in original Cata, Prot’s and Bear had an easier time as there were a lot of players playing and everyone wasn’t Min/Maxed or knew who is the best Tank. Now in Cata Classic people are just going to do what is best which eliminates other Tanks. All this information is available. Guilds are recruiting or have a dedicated Blood DK already and they don’t want or need anything else.
So this doesn’t end well for other Tanks for Cata Classic cause Blood DK’s are the clear choice. You are basically the fat kid waiting to be picked in Dodge ball. Everyone is going to take the Blood DK’s. It doesn’t have to be this way.
Just buff other Tanks, I’m not sure why anyone would logically be opposed to this.
I would like to say that out of all the tanks right now( yes I play all of them) That warrior has the most problems. Finding threat to be an issue on pull in 5 mans every dps is able to just out threat a warrior. I don’t want to say to much about how hard they get hit as we are in pre-patch where there just isn’t enough mastery to help them as it is there best stat by far. But I would like to see a threat rework.
Isnt prot warrior decent since we got the last patch of cata? Videos i saw only said prot warriors would be bad if we werent on the last patch.
people have to remember that we are not in full release of cata so no mastery, no new spells and talents points yet, once we are in cata and get maxed out and gear some of the issue’s will most likely smooth out. If you try to buff classes now in a prepatch it is gonna be wonky with full release and we start getting everything setup.
Iirc the 4.3 patch of scaling took it for granted that prot warrior would have access to final phase gear, if not T13. So in phase 1 cata with 4.3 scaling, prot isn’t avoidance capped and will take big spikes of damage. You can somewhat mitigate this by investing into a lot of mastery but overall prot warrior is in a rough spot. The issue of BDK being insane and feral being a stellar OT due to flexibility means it’s harder to warrant a tank spot as prot warrior unless you’re a top tier player, your group likes you, or the team is desperate because no one else is willing to tank.
All that to say, I don’t discourage people from playing prot, and you can clear all content with a prot warrior. But you will also be dealing with people’s perceptions of class viability all xpac - it’s an uphill battle with only your self-satisfaction on the line.
edit: I can’t find any substantiating evidence, so I’m crossing out my patch claims unless someone else can clarify the point I was trying to make.
I’m curious as to what this means. When I played Cata, I played Druid, Paladin and Warrior as tanks and played through Heroic Firelands on all 3 while the content was current (I stopped playing due to RL getting very busy). I don’t recall DKs having any significant advantages nor being particularly desired as tanks over other tanks then.
Obviously, that was a different patch level, so what changes that makes warriors so “bad”? and DKs in particular so good?
DKs have the blood shield. They were considered op. But like you i dont remember warriors being thar bad. My 10 man was prot war and me on a blood dk. I often offtanked.
Blood DKs were nerfed in this patch too. That guy is just trolling lol. He’s been typing paragraphs of nonsense about BDKs for awhile in the forums.
The Blood DK hyperbole is getting out of control. The collective brain - rot from youtubers repeating what each other say after looking at some private server stats is downright frightening.
They will be BETTER than they were in OG T11 with the armor and bone shield buffs, as will Druids (armor and health). So if you play the class well, Blood will be a fine choice for the tier.
But that’s it. What made Blood DKs so good in Dragon Soul was the crazy amount of stam and mastery they would accumulate from gear over the expansion. They we’re also just a good fit mechanically for a lot of the fights. Spine for grips, Madness Impale with multiple CDs and AMS has quite a few uses too.
Also Warriors are fine, though they could do with a small buff. Their main issue is CDs. They do bring another rallying cry though.
Also the whole “Feral off - tank” thing is driving me insane. They can do some solid DPS in cat form, no doubt. But they also make really good MAIN tanks because they’re fkn bulky. Savage Defense is f’n strong.
It wont be exactly the same because of the 4.3 balancing but I STRONGLY recall;
TIER 11: Druid + Pali
TIER 12: Pali + Druid / DK
TIER 13: DK + Druid
Again, they’re all more than viable.
If it’s being played by the “worst players” then they aren’t going to be timing Death Strike properly. Blood is extremely powerful, but using Death Strike on cooldown is doing it wrong when real content is concerned.
Edit: Is Cata when Death Strike started healing for a percentage of damage taken in the last 5 sec? I’d not then my post probably doesn’t stand. But from at least MoP onward it has to be timed properly or else mythic bosses are going to eat you alive.
Maybe now that Cata has launched he’s moved from “Wrath is perfect, Cata is literally retail” gimmick to “no other tank but blood needs to exist” gimmick.
If Cata eventually progresses to MoP, what will the gimmick be then?

Cata is the first Retail expansion, MoP is the 2nd Retail expansion, Blood DK’s are God tier in Cata. If you disagree coolzies but you won’t find many people that agree with you.
