How hard up are you to buy?
It’s possible you might score some better deals next week with BF.

Get Phanteks Eclipse P400A instead. They come with more preinstalled fans. P300A comes with only 1.
Power supply quality is you get what you pay for. Its something you will use for a very long time.
I didn’t even think about BF. I haven’t even planned on playing wow again, or at least SL until January. I have done projects that I want to do so I was going to just buy this stuff over the course of that break. I could add in some better pieces.
We’re gradually inflating the cost of the build as this thread gets longer.
I don’t know what the real answer is - while it’s easy to say, “well just spend a few dollars more here or there”, ultimately convincing someone to spend more than they can afford, or perhaps discouraging them, may not be the right path.
I would also check on pre-build sales on BF. It’s possible there may be some better deals than self-assembly, even if not all the parts are up to “techie snuff”
At present, with the updates recommended, we’re already at $600.
For $749 you can buy:
Skytech Archangel - Ryzen 5 3600, GeForce GTX 1660, 500 GB SSD, 16 GB DDR4, RGB Fans, Windows 10 Home, 802.11AC Wi-Fi - Gaming Desktop (ST-Arch3.0-0054-NE)
This is a much more competent CPU, a much stronger GPU, double the SSD capcity, and a W10 license. Well worth the $150 premium over what the DIY build is, even if some parts aren’t quite what we’d choose.
Which is why I stopped at SSD on the refinement. DRAMless SSD will tank performance when the load is elevated. Its a big deal.
DRAMless SSDs aren’t that bad. I’ve used several even at near capacity and they are still worlds above hard drives.
I wouldn’t personally buy one, but if you’re strapped for cash, it isn’t terrible.
Got some users reports A400 stutters. Right up to the system not being responsive. On top of that, warranty is 3 years.
I’m using 2 PNY SSDs, one is a 120gb CS900 and the other is a 480gb CS1311, neither has any issues and are DRAM less.
I wouldn’t buy them again because I can afford to, but I can’t say they’re the worst things ever either.
When looking at $25 ssd’s you aren’t given too many options.
On the other hand, there’s this BF special:
$334
Add a $28 8gb memory
8GB DDR4 3000
Add $100 1TB SSD
And a $150 1650
https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GeForce-128-Bit-Support-Graphics/dp/B07QTMRJTK/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=1650&qid=1605808900&sr=8-4
And we’re at $612
i5-10400, 6 core 12 threaded CPU
16GB DDR4 2933 RAM
1tb SSD
1tb HDD
1650 Super GPU
Power supply kinda meh, but that can be resolved at a later date.
Yeah I know lol. In any case I’ve appreciated all of the info. Going into this i didn’t have a clue, now I have a better idea of what to do going forward even if I switch out done if the items we what went over.
This one’s pretty compelling for the price
It is. I just didn’t want to drop all of that at once.
The only thing I would splurge on is cutting edge mini motherboard that allows more than 16 gig of ram. RAM is everything to get rid of lag. Then a SSD or M.2 or NVME of your choice. Try getting one with a built in video card. Historically built on motherboard video cards suck but the latest ones are very very good for gaming and would surprise you if get the one with the latest on board video.
So miniboard in a mid range case. Remember air going in is more
important than air going out to keep things cool and even linus tech tips tested that out and it was true.
I’ve been considering looking at more videos concerning different types of motherboards. Thank you.
It’s depressing since 6 months ago you could buy the same stuff for much less, and it was newer.
Only thing that seems decently priced right now are SSDs and monitors.
That’s what I get for just now thinking any building one.
Hell we even had some crazy deals just last year.
Used to be able to get:
$85 Ryzen 5 1600 AF
$70 B450 Motherboard
$65 16GB DDR4 3200
$140 RX580
$100 1tb Sata SSD
$70 650W PSU
$50 Case
$580 for a strong 1080p gaming pc
It’s these 3 that are driving up my price. If I had gotten them at this price, I could have swapped out the others fit lower priced items.
Not bad, just needs another stick of RAM
also decent for $749
parted out yourself would be close to $800
Claims to have a B550 chipset from the QA manufacturer. This is actually a good deal.
Both are above what I’m willing to spend in one setting. I’m thinking about buying the i3 9100f. I found it for $69.00. But it’s 35 miles away from where I live and they don’t deliver. Annoying. I may wait until later when it’s clearly not in back order.
I would advise you to ignore Intel 9000 series. Its a dead platform. Core i3-9100 is also quad core with no hyper-threading. Its essentially Core i5-7600+ in disguise. Your upgrade path will be more limited.
10000 series still have life since Rocket Lake uses same socket.
