Brokers = Racist cultural appropriation

With enough thought, most of WoW is pretty problematic. People just aren’t creative enough to invent a new accent, dress, etc. for random characters in videogames, DnD campaigns, fantasy novels, etc., so they borrow from their own experiences of literature, culture, and life. This gets problematic when people are borrowing from a society that already has a lot of deep-rooted racism, because the new “creation” ends up just perpetuating the old ideas.

For what it’s worth, the three brokers we get to know through voice acting (Xy’mox, Venari, and that lady from DoS) are some of the more interesting characters in SL. Also, the sterotypes associated with them (power hungry, ambitious, obsessed with wealth and tech, prone to collecting oddities) don’t really match the stereotypes for any group of people I’m aware of except maybe billionaires.

Venari’s VA is Egyptian? That’s so cool :o
I didn’t know Egyptians had such a cool accent.

I love the country and it’s the only place I would love to travel to someday but I don’t think I have ever spoken to any Egyptian or heard any talking, but now I know their accent is great :o

Well, the might actually count. They and Watto are really over the top. But, their lines are funny.

I always thought that the male Dwarves sounded like Sir Sean Connery. And as a fan and the fact that he has now passed, I am offended and triggered. Time to go watch “The Man Who Would Be King”.

I’m sorry… Did somebody say arabian stereotypes?

So the BROKERS are where you draw the line?

I remember the forums when Cataclysm was about to come out and people like the OP trolled the forums claiming Uldum’s pigmies were racist stereotypes of actual pigmies.

I can’t believe you all are actually debating with someone named Friedtoad. :fishing_pole_and_fish:

Not that I agree with the OP, but that makes no sense. I think we can all agree that a sword in a fictional planet is not racist.

If one were really wrapped up into the OP’s way of thinking (which I am not), wouldn’t MoP be the most problematic expansion in WoW’s history?

But it is a very good metaphor for something else. Did Azeroth give him permission to use that big giant sword?? I think not!!

Friday noon and I got little to do but to wait for a process to finish generating a text file filled with fascinating data about healthcare providers, their location, their specialties, the amount of money they owe, the amount of money they spent . . .

Villains do bad things. At least we stopped him. Now, when are we gonna get that thing out?

It’s weird that you saw non-human characters with accents engaged in trading and immediately thought Arab.

so what you are saying is they made these characters and you think they match the stereotype of your culture…sounds like your culture is exactly this then.
