Bring back the Garrison

No, not the live version we got in WoD.

I mean what it was originally intended to be, individualized player housing. Don’t bother adding the blacksmiths or auction houses or any of that stuff. Add in some new Garrison locations and themes, and give us areas to display/flaunt our collections.

Personally, I would love a couple weapon and armor racks that I could display my artifact and some choice mogs. Maybe some decoration rewards from content bosses like ESO does. A more robust stable or those juicy rare mounts. That’ll spice things up a notch.

Edit: For those of you claiming the Garrison was never player housing, watch from 7:28 forward. Garrisons were the dev team’s take on player housing and were intended to be more interactive than purely cosmetic.

Unlike games with 12 paying subscribers, Blizzard doesn’t really want people separating themselves from each other. They like that we all congregate together in cities.

Player Housing flies in the face of that design philosophy. If we get it, it’ll be when they’ve decided they no longer care if players interact or see each other.

I mean all they have to do is make the houses have nothing a player needs to function so they have to go to the city. Player housing should be entirely cosmetic.

Something similar to ESO where you can have a simple inn room up to an entire estate or castle. Like the garrison it would be phased to you upon entering the area out in the world. unlike ESO however I would limit it to where you can only have 1-2 homes at a time. If you want to get a new piece of property you have to sell the old one.

It’s actually not true, and if you’ll notice I specifically mentioned that they should not add items of utility to player housing. If you want to level your leather working, you’re still going to have to go to the city for it. There are several other MMO’s right now that have demonstrated player housing has little to no impact on the vibrancy of the outer world.

Instead of Garrison, how about guild hall? where all the guild members can hang out together and see each other and do all the things we used to do in WOD garrison?

why does it have to be 1 or the other. WHy can’t we have both player housing AND guild halls/islands.

There you go. Either way, it would be nice for all of the half-ideas Blizzard has had to be fleshed out a bit more instead of forgotten entirely.

How about instead they just update order halls and we keep those?

I am actually against guild halls until the concept of who owns the guild hall is fleshed out better. If a single person, the guild master, has full rights to it then what makes it different than player housing with more hoops to jump through to get? I might as well go make my own guild hall to get player housing then.

I dont want to help build someone else’s house so they can just kick me out of it whenever they choose.

How about we just have player housing in a guild hall within a order Garrison, with individualized server zones!

I was not a fan of garrisons, at all. I was not happy when they said class halls would be like them. Except, when class halls went live … they were actually decent. I’d be down for something like that again, but not garrisons.

Unfortunately, Blizzard said “No” to that and still sticks to it.

They didn’t want housing just to have housing, so they made it to keep people in the Garrison doing stuff (which is ironic, since that was Blizzard did NOT want.)

They’ve made fun of what ESO has, for 14 years (even without ESO existing.) ESO really did it EXACTLY how people in Wow have wanted it, with tradeskill tie ins and making it great for the economy.

If I recall, the exact slam that Blizzard always used was “Barbie Dream House.”

ESO actually does it so well it should embarrass everyone else. I was amazed at how simple it was, when my character bought the 10 K apartment and was then placing trophies, an orc rug, etc.

You don’t spend a lot of time in it, either. I would just go in and place something, say “ooooh!”, then leave.

Except that most MMO’s in the entire history of the genre has had housing. Housing done right is actually a social system - it’s an outlet for a player to be creative and show other players that creativity. Some of my favorite MMO memories come from house parties where players just gathered to have fun.

Housing is great, and when it’s done right it adds a whole new social dynamic to the game.

It’s part hilarious, part sad that after all these years, people are still repeating their old misinterpretations of what the devs said about garrisons when they were first introduced.

Just sounds like another cosmetic time waster…which I will get into it like an addict if implemented. Jump into it with both feets and spend untold hours with that Barbie Dream House. And ignore the rest of the game.

So it may keep people subbed longer maybe at the detriment of the game’s main design. Most people play WoW because of the WAR part - the fighting, killing monsters, gearing up to kill harder monsters. Never played ESO but seems like a totally different genre.

Maybe the RPers will love this but the raiders and PvPers will just scoff.

ps. Eternosus is absolutely right. Garrisons never had any form of the customization that makes player housing. The crafting was to ease the stigma of un-enchanted, un-gemmed, under geared newbies being denied groups. It didn’t work out too well - or maybe it did.

Mine were gold profit centers and worked out nicely for that xpac. It was all too self contained and worked fine for us solo players but didn’t do much for social dynamics except making groups for particular traders/pet battles/fishing.

Move onward.

Yeah, I was very disappointed how the Garrisons and Order Halls ended up discarded after their expansions. I really enjoyed having the extra decorations and statues that could be placed, and especially the Archaeology stuff.

Really should have a customizable space for our characters to “live” in.

I recommend you go back and rewatch the first announcements and compare and contrast what was actually said to what we got.

No.
Nonononono!
No more Garrisons!
Or ‘mission tables’ or ‘order halls’.
And especially NO ‘player housing’.!
I am a freebooter and wanderer, not a clerk!
I have only two homes; in combat or in a bar!
(or both)
My companion is an AXE!
I will know no other way!
Skôl.

This has never been the case in any game with player housing.
