I have a large, black box w my character’s name and a red question mark set right in the middle of my screen. I can’t post a picture of it but I have tried everything to remove it.
I have no add-ons enabled and everything is up to date (new computer). This is very frustrating and I am thinking about asking for a refund as I cannot do anything w this box in my way.
Please help.
Still sounds like an addon thing. Anytime there is a new expansion, it is best to do a full UI reset:
Then reinstall addons in small groups, verifying they have been updated for the current expansion.

Had the same issue. For some reason the box did NOT appear on my main character whom I’d already logged into after the prepatch, but it showed up on all other characters. I didn’t do a full reset, I disabled Addons in game and then enabled them one at a time, Reloading UI after each one. The black box was related to DBM, which had been updated since I loaded in my Addons folder. But again, I had logged onto my main this morning and didn’t get the black box. Weird.
While I’m not an add-on author, so I couldn’t explain it, it’s not really weird. When a new patch hits, especially a major content patch or expansion, the user interface can get many errors and do crazy things. And especially this patch, where there are major UI changes.
It’s good that you caught the culprit, as that can help others. But as much as it sucks, this is a good time to simply delete the three folders (Cache, Addons, WTF) and re-do your addons as they get updated. Not required, of course, but cleaning house can really help.
