On January 16th, 2009, two months after the release of Wrath of the Lich King, Wyrmrest Accord was opened for free transfers from various other roleplaying realms. Soon after, character creation was unlocked.
Wyrmrest Accord is a roleplaying server in the Pacific Standard Time (PST) zone, but there are many players on the East Coast and from Oceania that call this server home as well.
You may see that players from this community are called Wyrmies or Accordions and the server is nicknamed WRA.
Our server was moved from Phoenix to Los Angeles when the Cross-Realm System came into play, so we now share Cross Realm Zones with Blackwater Raiders, Cenarion Circle, Farstriders, Feathermoon, Moon Guard, Scarlet Crusade, Shadow Council, Silver Hand, Sisters of Elune and Thorium Brotherhood. We are not connected with any realms at this time.
According to WoW.RealmPop.com and as of Aug 9, 2018, the server’s populace is 52.1% Horde and 45.8% Alliance, making us one of the better-balanced servers out there. The percentile ebbs and flows over the course of an expansion but never really leans too far in favour of one or the other. Both factions have very active roleplaying communities and plenty of public events and RP guilds. In fact, many players participate in both factions with different characters while some pursue cross-faction roleplay.
Our overall number is 655,706 characters. The most-played race is Blood Elves (21.3%) followed by Humans (13.4%), and least played is Goblin and Gnomes (tieing at 3.3%).

Should I transfer/reroll to Wyrmrest?
And the answer to the first question is a resounding “maybe”. No one can give you a straight yes or no either way; it is something you will actually have to figure out for yourself. It is always recommended to roll a placeholder character first and poking around in-game before spending real money on a server transfer, no matter what server it is.
This thread will only get you started with general server information, some recommended resources, and other bits of information. Be sure to browse our forums here to get a feel for the community and look for guilds you may be interested in joining.
If you do intend to transfer to join one guild specifically, get into contact with the recruiting officers before you transfer to go over any recruitment requirements and questions you might have before transferring. Use that placeholder alt!
PvE?
RP stands for Raid Progression, amirite?
The PvE scene isn't too competitive here but we do have guilds progressing through Mythic each XPAC. There are a few non-guild groups that do PvE content, you can find their posts on the forums.

PvP?
With the change to Warmode, PvP is still new and untested. Though it seems you never have to wait too long before an RP-PvP event crops up. Character motivation tends to be more of a factor here. Overall, the PvP atmosphere on Wyrmrest is a friendly rivalry between the factions these days. There are a few non-guild PvP groups that you can find on the forums, as well as a few PvP guilds.
How is the RP scene?
Roleplay on Wyrmrest Accord is pretty good if we do say so ourselves. There are plenty of opportunities for walk-up RP, even with sharding. We are home to a large number of roleplaying guilds and a majority of our raiders and PvPers participate in roleplay to some extent. There are many events, workshops and communities to join if you need a place to start.
Should I transfer to Horde or Alliance? Which has better RP?
Honestly, we get this question often and the answer is usually the same... both factions. RP really depends on you, the player. Both factions have public RP, private RP, guild-centred RP... it is all a matter of how much effort you the player puts into finding it, or maybe you get lucky and stumble into someone that gets you an 'in' to some fantastic RP. The general advice is to roll an alt and poke around for a while, see what you like.
What are the main roleplay hubs?
Stormwind, Orgrimmar and Silvermoon have long been the standard destinations for random and city RP. Recently there was RP in Dalaran and the Broken Isles, though with the expansion change this has slowed quite a bit. If sharding changes take effect, I am sure we will see RP in areas of the new expansion. There are many opportunities for world RP, as many guilds have taken their events into small towns and neat secluded places which helps to inspire others to RP if they are in the same shard.
What race/class should I roll?
Play what makes you happy. We are ridiculously balanced as far as the classes go, but it is always hard to find good healers and tanks. It is ultimately your game time, play what you want!
Are there any add-ons that you would recommend for roleplay?
While it isn’t necessary for you to run any add-on to roleplay, you may find you have an easier time with at least an RP flag add-on. You can change your character’s name, write out their description and basic backstory for others to read. Running on the Mary Sue Protocol, they are all compatible with each other but you cannot run more than one of them at a time. The two most common on our server are Total RP 3 and XRP (written by our own Bor.)

ROLEPLAY
[A-RP] - for Alliance roleplay topics
[H-RP] - for Horde roleplay topics
[N-RP] - for neutral roleplay topics
[RP-<race/class>] - roleplay that is subject to a certain class, race or both
[LFRP] - looking for roleplay, works well if you are looking for a certain kind of roleplay
[LFM-RP] - looking for more, sometimes used for stories that are in play, but needs another character

Covenant of Wyrmrest Accord
The credit for this goes to a very old roleplayer of Kirin Tor, Sesobael and brought to Wyrmrest by Huatar. It is a reminder that we should treat our community with kindness and respect so that we can create something that is positive. I will treat my fellow World of Warcraft players respectfully on an Out-of-Character level even when they don't seem to deserve it. I don't know what sort of day they've had.
I will not respond to immaturity with further immaturity.
I will acknowledge and respect the roleplaying choices of other people, even if I don't understand them. This includes the choice not to roleplay at all. I do reserve the right to respond in-character how my character would normally react, even if that would not be positively, but I will bear no animosity to the player of the other character.
I will offer friendly advice and criticism, but back off if it is not wanted. You just have to tell me to do so.
I will listen to offered advice and consider it. I can't promise to follow it, but I won't dismiss it out-of-hand.
I will name all of my characters appropriately and according to RP realm naming conventions.
I will not use leetspeak, excessive abbreviations, "lol" or the like while in-character, as they could be damaging to other people's roleplaying mood.
I will try not to hold a grudge about loot or PvP. It's only a game. The character on the screen is not me, it's just a video avatar associated with a long string of semi-personalized numbers.
I will not go to another realm's forum and complain about their behavior on the Battlegrounds. I'd like to show some dignity and class so perhaps players from those realms will start treating us the same way.
If I am having a problem that I can't resolve myself, I will ask for help. There is no shame in asking for assistance, and a fresh perspective might be just what is needed.
I will play World of Warcraft to have fun. If I stop having fun, I will stop playing. If it becomes inconvenient to play due to real-life circumstances, I will stop playing. It doesn't necessarily mean that the other players on Wyrmrest Accord have done anything wrong. No, you can't have my stuff, I might come back someday. Seriously. Sheesh.
I will respect the time and decisions of the game masters, designers, forum moderators, public relations representatives, and other employees of Blizzard, even if I don't agree with them. These people put a lot of time and effort into making our gaming experience worthwhile for everyone, and are just trying to do their job within the constraints given to them by the company, its parent's company, and the law of the land. If I have an issue which needs to be regarded, I will go through the proper channels.
I will abide by the various terms of use and service that I signed when first installing the game or logging onto the forums. I will remain good to my word.
I reserve the right to add or remove aspects of this covenant, and to respect the decisions of others with regards to the covenant. It must be, and is, a self-regulating code of honor. I will not look down on others for not ascribing to the covenant.

This is definitely an excellent guide! Even though I have Rped for years I never saw the Covenant before.
a few suggestions:
Races - the Forsaken & Dwarf links lead to the "topic deleted" message. & where are the rest of the race guides? Here's one to start:

guides, not rules. With the Pandaren one - for example - I think it's an excellent guide for those new to the race, but there are also things I do differently. Mostly in terms of there being a lot more variation. As I said though, imho excellent for beginners.
A couple of suggestions for additions to the section on Forum tags - Open RP is sometimes used to indicate events such as market nights that don't really require invitations or sign-ups. <
insert name here> is commonly used for guild names in forum thread titles & in trade chat.
On lore: Wowpedia ( https://wow.gamepedia.com/Wowpedia ) is a source I use for basic lore info. Most of their articles are well annotated with footnotes to Blizzard sources and links to Wowhead, etc.
A general thing that new RPers have legitimate concerns about is not knowing lore. I haven't seen in any of the guides what are imho actually the three most important things for them to know:

Don't take what the lore-yers say as gospel. Several people in a group of brand new rpers I was helping learn the basics (didn't even know how to use custom emotes at first) said they were actually so afraid of getting something wrong that it had kept them from even starting to try to rp. They were totally surprised when I pointed out that the same people who will tell you that you are wrong to even play your character - based on a Blizzard tweet taken out of context - ignore Blizzard's declaration that quest-givers and other in-game lore tellers are unreliable narrators. Everyone is allowed to have their own point of view.

It's ok not to know all the lore - even for your own race or home region. One of the best characters I interact with regularly is a farmer who's never left Pandaria. Has barely been to the zone just on the other side of the hill from the farm. So that player has no reason to need to know whatever the character doesn't. At least at first. Meeting someone IC* and asking questions about really weird things you never heard of before or even not believing what they told you a story about actually happened is a lot more fun than studying sites & reading books like you were trying to get a good grade in an on-line grad school course.

You can't win RP. It's pure play, not a game with rules and a score. So play what's fun & do what you can to help the people you play with have fun.
*IC (in-character) & OOC (out of character) are unfamiliar terms to brand new RPers. Yet they're so fundamental to knowing what RP even is. Is there room for them and maybe a few others in your guide?
In the "just curious" category: there are RP 101 & 102 guides here, so why did you list the one on Moonguard without also mentioning them?

Thanks for the feedback and links Kunboket. I'll go through all the feedback one at a time:
I listed a few to start with, in the hopes that folks like you (thanks again!) may steer me to some other relevant guides. I only have XP with playing the races I listed so I put in the links that I went to... they were working when I started the post in August so I am sad that they no longer work.
In terms of the messaging about guides vs Blizzard law, I can put a caveat in the endnotes to cover that, I am trying to keep the posts from being too wordy because I have run into the issue of 5000 character limits sadly with links sections. But you may be right, just because more experienced of us may know a guide is a guide, newer folks (and what this post is mostly intended for), may not.
I would love to add the suggestions for new RPers, but again I have a character cap sadly. If you have a link to a beginners guide with those, or I can just link to your post and call it beginner tips? EDIT: What if we started a new post that I could link to called What I wish I knew when I started to RP? And have the community contribute? Then I could link to that?
As far as the just curious section, I actually at first was not going to list any of our WRA stickied posts in this post as I assumed that people would just see them if they saw this one. BUT, I changed my mind last minute and put the communities link in. I am still on the fence a bit.
I hope that covered everything, but I am happy to answer more if it didn't.
I will get on to adding your links and suggestions, and if anyone else has constructive and useful things to add I am all ears and antlers.

I think they are well thought out suggestions. Honestly, most of my forum posts are done too early in the morning or too late at night and not entirely cooked yet. Hence why this one spent a month in a Google Doc. :p

Awe, thanks! I actually was around but stepped back quite a bit due to my job being a bit crazy. Now that I am settled I want to be up to my antlers in the community again.
