Blizzard's Lore Q&A

So I heard that there is going to be a Q&A regarding the lore of Battle for Azeroth once Blizzard returns from holiday. Has there been any word on when we can start submitting questions?
This expansion is in desperate need of lore clarity, and even though we probably all know they usually pick the easiest of questions. There are certain plot holes that are in desperate need of answering.

January the tenth. But it’s not a QA. They are taking no questions.

Not to be nihilistic, but brace for heartbreak.

They are going to softball the ever loving hell out of this Q&A.

it will probably just be like the ask the cdevs they did a while back

Kinda thinking this aswell, so I’m just gonna be pushing for crap to do in Silithus since I like bugs n’stuff. If can’t get anything out of the over-arching story, hopefully I can get some little bits of goodness before I cancel my sub…

UNLESS THEY FINALLY ADDRESS ISSUES GOING ON WITH THE WAR CAMPAIGN AND MANAGE TO EASE THE FRUSTRATIONS OF ON BOTH THE ALLIANCE AND HORDE…

:no_mouth:

But i kinda doubt it. I hope I’m wrong. Please let me be wrong!..

They really just need to put on their big boy pants. And summon up the courage to answer the hard hitting questions. Even if their answer is “Oh crap we forgot that, guess we’ll have to write around it now” since they can’t undo all the work they did. It would at least be taking ownership and that would earn lots of points for respect.

I just want to know if there is any internal communication between the teams.

For example, the Horde description ON THE WEBSITE states the following:

“The indomitable Horde is driven by unity. They are fervent keepers of freedom and hope, relentlessly opposed to any who threaten these ideals, including the stringent Alliance.”

The Bold is important here.

Unity - The Horde has never been this fractured or divided in the existence of the Franchise. Major lore characters are opposed to the Warchief (whom they swear an oath of loyalty to) their newest Allies are questioning their decisions and Blizzard has even put in a player choice to stand with either Sylvanas or Saurfang. This is literally the opposite of unity.

Freedom - Sylvanas literally wants to kill every last man, woman and child in Stormwind and raise them as Forsaken to serve her.

Hope - Literally burns down Teldrassil to spite Delayrn and prove that she can, in fact, kill hope.

Threaten - The only unity under Sylvanas is under her banner, whether you’re willing or otherwise, this has been established. The only freedom under Sylvanas is what she grants you. The only hope is that she brings you back after you served her purpose. This is how the Warchief of the Horde has been written. The Horde is held to the standard of it’s Warchief. That’s just how it has been. Right now, the only “threat” to the Horde is the Horde itself.

Stringent Alliance - Has welcomed cursed Humans, volatile Dwarves and Void-Touched Elves into its ranks with open arms. Attempted to establish a peace treaty with the Horde, and even tried to reunite the living and the undead to bridge the gap.

This is just… it shows no one is communicating, or at the very least, not communicating well.

I enjoy the lore of Warcraft. I enjoy the stories (granted, Alliance more than Horde, but I digress). But this story for BfA is just so all over the place, and it starts with things like this.

“Now I know what you guys are thinking: ‘Ion, what is Magni’s favorite breakfast?’ So, it’s a bit of a complicated question to tackle, because we have so many options to choose from. There’s a really rich, deep history spanning many games regarding many iconic lore characters’ breakfasts of choice, but we’ve never quite touched on Magni’s breakfast, which we’re planning to really work on in the future and flesh out some of those burning questions the fanbase has: what kind of juice does he choose to accompany said breakfast? Does he drink coffee, and if so, is it black, or with cream and sugar? These are tough questions we’ve got to answer before we try and introduce that into the lore. What I can definitely say is that Magni’s breakfast is balanced, and it’s really healthy and nourishing, really fit for a diamond-y dwarf king out to save the planet from imminent implosion. (breathy chuckle) Great question, thanks.”

Even if they answer the hardest of the hard questions it doesn’t matter one little bit because the big, fat, socially awkward question that looms over all of these Dev Lore talks is “Why is none of that shown in the game?”

Seriously, we shouldn’t be learning these answers by having some dev spout out something on the spot because we should have had the answers presented to us in the course of playing the game.

Show, don’t tell. It’s the oldest rule of story telling!

What is the nature of the “shades of what could have been” AKA the Alternate Timelines destined to fade?

What are the Shadowlands? What does Chronicle mean by "existed ever since mortal life first arose in the physical universe."?

From what Realm did Blue Dragons summon Aluneth from before it was put into a Staff?

Yes I’m seeking out the big questions!

I’m going to make a drinking game out of it.

If Hazzikostas tells the Horde to ‘wait and see’ again, I’m drinking an entire fifth of Jack Daniels.

Not gonna lie; if they did that, if they openly said something about how they made their mistakes by ignoring stuff or overemphasizing how a certain faction is painted extremely negatively and they wish they could undo that and will try and tone it down going forward… Hell, if they could say anything that wasn’t just some softball bullcrap, I’d feel a lot better.

I mean you’re 100% right Bromdai, however showing requires more work than telling and there are certain things they have already shown us that place them in a corner and would be easier to address in a Q&A than try to make a new quest line or something making sense of it.

Precisely my point.

This sounds like exactly the kind of response they’d give us haha.

I really wish someone would just read that description to them and get an explanation, because it’s all just such a comical lie.

Never ever hold out hope for this, hah. Instead, I encourage skeptical positivity.

“This isn’t going to go well, but I’d love to be pleasantly surprised.”

this is pretty much where im at. i dont believe they will answer the plot holes but i’d like to be wrong.

Unfortunately for us, Blizzard is “Gameplay first.” and story, clearly, doesn’t count as an important component of gameplay for them.

Well idk about them being “gameplay first,” I’ve been playing BFA and I’m not seeing that as their montra. I’m confused how Legion was drastically better (at this point in it’s life, there is time for BFA to improve). I’ve begun to believe that it’s “We’ll try every other expansion,” at least starting after Cataclysm. Since TBC, LK were both winners, and Cata was just poorly managed.
Mists->Effort
WoD-> Give up
Legion->Effort
BfA->Take it easy

Well, they say it’s gameplay first; it’s engraved on the statue plaques outside their HQ, and it’s always been their core philosophy.

No argument against them not living up to it, though, for sure.
