I don’t want a gay coming of age story hammered into the plot of wow. I’ve seen more than enough of those, and while they can be beautiful, and make perfect sense in worlds more similar to our own, I don’t think that is necessary in WoW. However, I do think a gay couple here or there might be nice. I don’t think it needs any more explanation than any straight couple, especially as there is no indication in Warcraft lore that gay people experience any kind of special discrimination. Most of the main couples in WoW do matter plot wise, but the heterosexuality of them doesn’t really. If Occuleth and Thalyssra’s roles in Nightborne leadership were flipped, I think the most recent story would be just as plot significant if it were Occuleth and Lor’themar getting it on. Of course that’s not the case ,but there is no reason why a different lore relevant gay couple couldn’t exist. I don’t need a big lore relevant gay couple, but I also don’t know of one reason against one.
Hey now, harsh accusations there.
EDIT: As far as the OP, it could be interesting if creatively applied
Like Trans or Gender fluid for an undead, since they actually have jokes about stitching on body parts; Gender Reassignment would be a bit of macabre simplicity.
I hate how much I love that for undead. It’s so grossly beautiful. Undead… I love them so
We don’t need Blizzard to rub in our faces the sexual orientation of their characters as its the downfall of a character if his sexuality is all he can bring at the table instead of an interesting personality, interaction or even arc to follow.
The media has proven numerous time that token characters doesn’t work outside of some references/jokes and even those aren’t received that well.
didn’t we just do this
based
That’s what I was thinking, I actually thought it was the other post until I saw the date it was created.
On topic: WoW isn’t a dating sim, the last time they tried to make a relationship centre focus was Aggra and Thrall and people near universally reviled that so maybe they just don’t have a place in this kind of story.
So if they want to make money they need to cater to the majority, right? And last time I checked straight people makes vast majority of the population. I don’t think this argument would hold up here because if the lack of representation would turn off some people, the company wouldn’t really notice it because these specific people are a minority.
Blizzard can’t even handle in-game -isms correctly and you want good romantic LGBT lore?
Like I’m bisexual. Would LOVE to see idk, Flynn be bisexual, or Rommath be an aloof gay, or Garona to be lesbian or something.
But I don’t trust WoW to handle that story. At all.
- you dont have to be gay to actually support/want gay representation.
- majority of young people, particularly in western nations, seem ok with lgbt+ characters.
- if anyone will be turned off by gay characters, I expect it would be a minority of more right wing individuals.
- Blizzard as a company and from the looks of it, many of its higher ups, are quite liberal. Hell, I think I saw Kosak like a tweet about how LGBT+ won a landmark US case today.
No, not even close. Last major one would be Alleria/Turalyon and even how both are now of literal opposite elements they still love each other.
What media have you been looking at recently? I could probably list half a dozen cartoon now that manage to make gay characters integral to the plot. Hell, off the top of my head we have Harley, Steven Universe, Kipo, Loud House, She-ra, The Hollow.
Netflix has probably been the biggest bastion of mainstream LGBT+ content recently
That’s hardly centre focus.
It was the central focus of an entire series of audio short Blizzard created. Hell, we have Genn risking everything to save the woman he loved from Teldrassil. We have Tyrande doing the same. We have an entire short story about Lother’mar and Thalyssra getting together. We have a short story about Nathanos and Slyvanas relation.
Romance in WoW has had just a big an effect on the story as many other things. In some way said romance have probably had more profound effect(see Vereesa after Rhonin was killed)
(Query): How would you incorporate a gay romance story into World of Warcraft in such a manner as to have a profound effect on the narrative and story, and on a positive scale, rather than negative?
(Commentary): I ask this as a straight (the H word for straight is censored for some reason) relationship serves an important function in literature as it does in life; procreation. If Turalyon had been gay for Uther, Arator would not be born. If Varian had been gay for Arthas, Anduin wouldn’t be around (well, maybe not the best example). If Moira was gay and only interested in women, the Council of Three Hammers wouldn’t exist, nor would an heir to unite the three dwarven clans for the first time since the War of Three Hammers. Obviously not every relationship leads to procreation even among straight couples (Tyrande hasn’t had any of Malfurion’s kids yet). That said, the potential story as a result of this cannot be ignored.
Saying you don’t want gay romance in WoW because it would likely be poorly written is weird. If something being low quality writing is enough to make you not want in the game, then you might as well just toss all the servers in a dumpster right now, cause I got bad news for you.
(Commentary): I mean, WoW isn’t going to win awards for writing these days, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t care about the quality and standards we’d like to see.
(Speculative): I’d like to see more gay couples in the Shadowlands, to be honest. Considering the native races don’t procreate in the biological sense, I think there would be a lot more room for Shadowlands characters to explore relationships with others as people, rather than genders or a biological drive. That’s not to say all relationships in WoW right now are like that, but it’s an underlying point to the nature of relationships in it. Immortal races that don’t procreate are perfect to explore gay romances with.
Wasn’t there a steamy romance novel where Marcus engages in an activity that is not safe for work with the stable hand in your Garrison?
https://wow.gamepedia.com/A_Steamy_Romance_Novel:_Savage_Passions
for reference.
By your logic Prince Erazmin would be an ideal candidate, given that Mechagnomes have the option to trade away their biological reproductive parts without care.
No it doesn’t.
Enough IPs are ruined enough by foisting ideologies onto them that do not work.
Make an IP, make it popular, then insert your politics into it.
(Commentary): Theoretically, at least. The race still exists so it’s still procreating somehow. I haven’t seen anything to suggest they’re cloning gnomes.
What ideology are you talking about?
Gay people exist, buddy. That’s not an ideology.
Why do we need to have it constantly shoved into our faces?
