I really don’t care one way or the other. At this point, the only purpose flying seems to serve is to make it faster/easier to level alts. It doesn’t serve any kind of end game function. There’s no zones or areas that are only accessible with flying, and there’s no hidden/extra dungeons you have to fly to get to.
They need to just stop this grindy gating crap. It should be simple:
- need to be max level
- need to have done all the story quests in each zone
- explorer for each zone
- if any rep (which I’m.not a fan of) it should basically be what you would get from doing all the story quests. Maybe a bit more since they may want world quests to require travel for a bit. But not what they have now.
That’s it. IMHO Pandaria handled it correctly Their entire argument is flying let’s you ignore the “beautiful zones” they’ve designed. The above restrictions make you see those zones first. After that nobody cares about the zones since you’re there for what are basically chores/drudge tasks (i.e. dailies and/or world quests and/or treasure/rare hunting). You don’t need to see all of the zone every time you go there.
I’d say any additional zones should not have flying if they are kept relatively small like Mechagon and Nazjatar (although Nazjatar is annoying and that sort of design encourages flying). Again they did this right with Pandaria. You couldn’t fly on the Timeless Isle and it was compact and enjoyable. They even had those cool blood coins or whatever that let you fight anyone.
Every other complaint I’ve seen has been basically nonsensical whining. Flying killed world PVP? You mean being able to gank someone you saw without them having a chance to get away? Flying makes the world feel smaller? So what? By the time you unlocked it you saw the world, and you don’t need to see the same crap on every character. Nobody cares to look at the scenery when they’re driving to the store to do chores. They want to get there as fast as possible, get it done and get on with doing important things.
Lack of flying was a massive reason for me not keeping an ongoing sub for expansions from WoD onwards. I’m not the only one.
