Blizzard is censoring harsh words in game now

beep boop in the simulation you can say “boy” but IRL it’s a permaban

So you made the whole thing up.

If you think you need to use the N word on your black friends and the C word on your female friends, you don’t have any friends.

What? Stop dude.

Because it’s exactly the same schtick. You’re basically touting a carnival game like it’s some kind of ultimate proof of intelligence. Look up “Billy on the street name a woman” and you can see exactly the same principal in action - if you suddenly walk up to someone and abruptly ask them anything, it’s a bad gauge of how “smart” they are in general. You’re only testing how quick they are on their feet.

And they’re only showing you the bit when they walk up to someone who “looks” liberal. I guarantee they’d get the same results walking up to anyone of any political affiliation and asking them questions abruptly and unprepared.

It’s the same thing that happens with Jordan Klepper segments.

Sweetheart. I work in downtown Portland. Do you know why it’s as bad here as it is?

Because the local PD in Bumfrick, Idaho doesn’t want to deal with druggies and people who were turned out of deregulated mental health institutions, so they give them a one-way bus ticket to Portland, or to San Francisco, and they think to themselves “Yeah, they’ve got services for them there,” and then they pat themselves on the back for being so smart. You’re basically complaining that the local dump has a lot of trash in it.

Still, you are right that we do what we can for them here, to try and get them help and services and back on their feet if we can. It’s terrible of us, I know, to not discard human beings like refuse and let them die. And sometimes, you’re right, that leads to rows of tents along a major street, which is unsightly and makes people frowny. Surely, it’s the downfall of modern society!

You never could. You never can.

HOWEVER, by preventing the most obvious of words from even being said, you put the point across that “These are not words we want you to use.” Because words do have power, especially when nobody says “these are bad words”.

Further, by banning specific words, Blizzard can then use methods of getting around those filters (such as spacing out the words) as justification for silencing or banning users, because circumventing those filters are against the TOU.

Again, at this moment we’re only talking about one word, although I can think of a number of words to add to that list. But even so, we’re talking about words that, except within a certain context, are likely to give the apprehension that the person using those words is racist. Perhaps sexist. Perhaps homophobic.

Is that really the hill you want to die upon?

hah… that’d be why i couldn’t find it… i checked so many threads, but didn’t think to look through this one. :upside_down_face:
don’t worry, i don’t get offended easily.

if they’re existing students, perhaps they haven’t actually learned the thing yet? :exploding_head:

I am not a fan of the word. But I’m less of a fan of totalitarian type of control over players.

Words do not have power. Meaning has power. Even the slang version of that word is as bad as the original word. So you see. If the community decides the kneebiter is the new N word, one can be just as derogatory as they were before.

I mean this whole concept was proven with the stupid “ok” hand symbol which 4chan used to troll the woke brigade.

I don’t think that not letting people type out the n-word in game, only using the correct spelling and no symbols or spaces, equals “totalitarian control”.

Congratulations, you’ve just explained how language evolves and the meanings of words change over time. How does that apply to people not being able to use the n-word in a video game again?

Maybe if actual white supremacists would stop using it “ironically” people would stop associating it with their entire deal.

Gonna make a suggestion and say that they were not using it unironically until after 4chan made it a thing. and even IF they were. It’s the OK hand sign. We can’t stop normal hand gestures because of some bad players.

What’s next? Waving hello?

You are chasing something that can’t be caught and in the end after you decide to ban all movement by the hands and feet and facial expression and everything else that, over time has had it’s meaning bastardized…then you will realize what totalitarian means.

So is your suggestion that blizzard should abandon course and just allow people to freely use racial slurs in chat?

I mean…if known white supremacists went around “trolling” people with a hello wave as some kind of dog-whistle signal to each other of like, hello to the new master race or something dumb like that, then yeah, that could potentially become a thing. That’s not the fault of people being too reactionary, that’s the fault of people taking innocuous things and associating them with terrible things, ruining them in the process.

The swastika used to be a symbol of good luck until gross people used it to mean a gross thing, and now you can’t get a tattoo of it without getting the side-eye. You can keep insisting “I mean it in the non-racist way!” but no one will believe you.

There is a jelly cat in game, it’s name is banned on these forums. also, there’s a dance, often associated with sailors, been around for hundreds of years, name banned. A synonym for big dummy, banned. what’s the nickname for Richard? best not use it.
Harsh words? so, is “LOSER” on the list?

not really relevant to the conversation.

i don’t know why people want to try and create drama where there is none.

nobody is trying to stop you from waving.

there are currently no existing rules in the game which say “no waving”.

I guess I come from a time where the internet wasn’t policed so heavy as such I was able to develop this mechanism in place called “thick skin” which manages to protect me when no mods are around!

depends on how it is aligned.
square to the earth and sun is how new world Indians drew it, notably Hopi Indians.
Balanced on one foot/leg/arm is the portrayal we mostly are familiar with, and yes, has some negative baggage. Drawing it square, some will give you flak as a racist, and the racists will give flak cause its drawn wrong, draw it square and backwards, and the Hopi won’t like you either.

pretty much everyone in 2020/2021 disagrees with you lol
snowflakes be rampant man

as other people have suggested I think it would be funnier to just replace all those words with muffin, or cupcake like some other games do.

so when someone goes on a racist tear… it just sounds like they are really craving a cupcake = hilarious… situation diffused.

All this rolls of my back as I have an amazingly thick skin compared to most everyone here.
