Hopefilly, someone else would be writing.
I mean … That pales in comparison to what Riot hauled from their game ‘League of Legends’ into their successful animated series ‘ARCANE’ – despite it being well received & really popular, it still didn’t quite turn over a profit … The amount poured into the animated series? A whopping —
$250 MILLION DOLLARS!
Albeit they speculate they may break even – one day …
That all being said, there’s also the reward they get from advertising their game through presenting such a successful & highly regarded show – So there’s also the bonus profit their game may have made from that too.
As for whether or not Blizzard is capable of pulling off an extraordinary animated show that contends with the likes of Arcane? Well … That’s another story. lol
Thus, an animated show is a double edged sword … One must just hope, that the harmful edge is dull whilst the desirable edge is sharpened.
That’s the problem…it didn’t. The advertising got them nothing.
"Arcane didn’t attract a significant number of new players to League of Legends, according to someone familiar with sign-up numbers. Although there was a noticeable number of people who downloaded and tried out League, not many players stayed. "
Yeah, but temporary players may have still purchased a skin or two in the euphoria of hype they had from the show.
Either way though, I still acknowledged they hadn’t quite turned a profit … That’s not to say it wasn’t successful — It certainly was, without a doubt — It just wasn’t greatly profitable, due to the shear magnitude of its cost & expense.
I like the Warcraft movie.
I think they should just do long cinematics. Use the in game engine, just like we have today. Not the amazing photorealistic stuff that they do, those take forever.
The in game engine. Use that for episodic content. Maybe once every 2 months, but continuous.
The idea of using the in game engine to crush the actual production costs. They have 1000s of in game assets and characters and items and effects they can leverage. They can always add more, but if its mostly blocking, dialog, and camera angles, I think it would make the actual production cheap and fast. So they don’t need some huge team to do it, they can pump out the content on a regular basis.
Similarly, I would like them to add more quests lines on each patch. Not just in the new zones, but current zones of the expansions. Toss in a another couple dozen WQs while they’re at it.
More story stuff, not just more gear. And the in game animated series can be a big part of that.
Even better, they can us it to expand on old lore.
Then, of course, there’s my final idea.
They should go back and redo every expansion as campaign scenarios in WC III. 10-15 scenarios per expansion. It would be even better to do it per zone. An Arakkoa campagin in WC III format would be good times. I found WC III scenarios to be a great storytelling mechanic.
They don’t need huge AAA teams to do this, they already have most of these assets. Just need to write it down and make some maps.
Doing intro to an expansion animation and a full feature film are two very different beasts.
With Faerin Lothar as the main protagonist and disabled Khadgar as her sidekick…
This show will be a record-breaker.
It was successful as a work of art, just not as a business venture.
Hopefully its success means that they’ll be willing to make more, and Netflix will be willing to foot more of the bill this time around.
I would like to see more animation adaptations of fantasy and sci-fi properties.
Not being successful as a business venture means they would be less likely to make more, and Netflix would be less willing to foot more of the bill.
We know everythinf has to bring money for it to justify it existing … but one can wish theyd make an animated series just for the love of the game/playerbase
Making a wow series so it appeals to others is different than makimg it for its diehard fans.
Yes we dont need a fully fledged cgi animation un a 12 episode season. But I dont see how making a small animsted series anime style would cost many Ms. One can dream
This is so vague it doesn’t make any sense. Care to clarify?
Well, I meant for Riot specifically.
For Netflix’s part it was a wildly successful endeavor, because they paid very little to have it made and made almost 100% of the profits from its existence.
It’d have characters that aren’t straight and white, so he’s decided to hate it on principle.
Sounds like a South Park episode.
they should make a movie with puppets. like labyrinth, but wow.
that would make approximately 329394956971 dollars.
It was also their most expensive animated show ever.
More expensive than Squid Game, barely under Daredevil.
Even Cho said HEROES charged through AQ.
But I did mention I knew there were faces there that told us “collect that” or “kill this” but WE were the ones that went in and imprisoned C’Thun.
Just show saurfang not that hard. I stand by what I said every vixtory was sponsored by a faction, or a group of real heroes, well known names etc. Not difficult. Even dungeons have actual names going in them. Is not difficult and obviously not a roadblock imo. Can be done 100%
I meant in the regard of its views, ratings and received emotion from the audiences & viewers – Heck, it’s even one of Netflix’s most watched shows.
However yeah, as a business venture – not so much; mostly due to the reason I mentioned earlier, the magnitude of its cost & expense to produce it.
But that all being said, I WILL say:
Kudos to them taking the risk & producing a film of such vast expense to make a work of art, storytelling and appeal to the fans
Hopefully more can follow in their example
… And we can get some advancements in technology that helps reduce the cost of making such things, so we can get more of them @ lower cost in the future
AND… It would be entertaining, but think that it would increase the MMO’s audience?
Yeah… new people would come in but the FOMO would be between being a toxic player who would drive people away due to elitist discomfort, not even a documentary that REFLECTED ANYTHING OF WHAT A CASUAL PLAYER WOULD BE would help yeah… that’s same with Arcane animated Serie and the LoL comunity which did nothing to help attract an audience to the video game.
And I say this because we realized that one of the reasons companies adapt their video games to television or film is that instead of being a means of entertainment.
Anyway, if you want an animated series that reflects what happened in the first and second wars without first OVERVALUING AND MENTIONING AGAIN AND AGAIN, AND AGAIN ARTHAS AND HENRY CANVILL, when HENRY CANVILL would do well as Varian Wrynn, a king of Stormwind who also had his soul split in 2 like Superman in Death and Return and apart from that it would be all the lore of Warcraft and WoW without needing to put Arthas.
And that would be between live-action and an animated series, but that depends on Blizzard itself, otherwise it will live like vultures in a documentary about another unfortunate person who is better off dead than what he was in life.
All the video game to tv/movie adaptations that have failed are because the people making the show/movie decide they want to put their own mark on the franchise and completely miss what made that franchise so successful.
The Last of Us? Amazing. Arcane? Awesome. Fallout? Blew it out of the park. Sonic? They’re on the third film and there’s been a show so clearly they’re doing something right. Mario? I finally just watched this the other day and it was really enjoyable.
Halo? Trash (I could make an entire post on this show alone, because the helmet coming off wasn’t the issue). Borderlands? Trash. Warcraft? It had potential but they flubbed it.
There’s probably many more I’m forgetting on both sides, but if you honour the source material, the fans will come. We will do the marketing for you. Just honour the bloody source material.
