@ Blizzard and the Layering thing

Layering may have actually worked out as a blessing in disguise and I don’t know if you guys are actually aware of this right now.

Phase 1 has layering, we all know this and I know many people don’t like this but it’s just a reality of phase 1 that we all have to deal with.

However the problem has been brought up regarding Layering in phase 2 when layering is removed.

How do we solve that problem? Will there be long Q’s?

A solution to the layering is as elegant as the layering system it self.

Make the layers semi-static and based on your friends / guild association. As time goes on the “list” can be refined as to what layer you the player are more or less associated with. This semi static layer is persistent even when you’re off line, this way if you jump back on you will likely be in the same layer with your guild and the bulk of your friends. (in theory, because no system ever works so flawlessly)

When phase 2 ships, and the servers are over crowded because layering is no longer present, then why not just divide the servers into their own actual servers based on those layers that you made semi static.

Meaning if Classic server “Classic Wow” has 3 layers, then Classic WoW can be divided into Classic WoW 1, 2, and 3 and no longer can you chat, trade, or group with people in the other “past layers” (phase 2)

Please remember this is just an initial napkin projection on how it could work, not a final draft, and only here to help Ye old Blizzard do their thing as best they can.

Thanks, and have a great day.

Williams.

Let Blizz think about that. See you in August!

This all depends on who stays or leaves before phase 2. Server popularity will play a part in this.
When they release those server names I have a feeling those who plan on playing long term are going to flood a few specific servers. This is good and bad. Lol.
Idk. Maybe blizz has a contingency plan similar to what OP has outlined but there’s going to be issues if say 3 layers have to become 3 independent servers come phase 2. Idk. Going to be interesting.

Do you ever just have a feeling about how things will work?

Its like the force of a river going in a direction and if you just accept what is you can see the eventual outcome.

Thats how this Classic WoW thing has been, like the force of a large river, and It just looks like it will get bigger the further down the river we go.

You just defined Sharding.

Only we’re being led to think that river will shrivel up into a tiny stream come phase 2 so we shouldn’t worry.

Are we starting a “population drop” denier cult?

Don’t need to really. pserver pops have greatly increased since beta came out across a few pservers.

Yeah sure :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

The draw for Classic with be significantly larger than the pserver draw.

We all know Classic has a wall that sheds players. The populations will drop. Without a doubt.

I wasn’t talking long term. I was just talking about the significant jump since beta came out.

Beta rejects increased one server by 5K.

Oh, sure, there’s going to be a HUGE amount of players when Classic launches.

If the players joined over a staggered period of time then layering wouldn’t have been the solution of choice. We are going to get the bulk of new players in a very should time period. Then the vacuum that will come after.

A month or two is plenty of time for people to realize the wall.

Someone mentioned something in another thread to help with the starting crush on the servers and I thought it was a good idea.

Why not have a separate sub for classic wow for the first month or two? That would keep a lot of the tourists away and make launch easier. After the first month then make classic wow a part of the standard sub. Then the tourists can come, see what the server pops look like, and decide where to roll.

I would think this would also help blizz to more accurately estimate launch day numbers.

Isn’t it only in low level zones? Pre lvl 20?

Actually it’s an entirely different concept.

Layering is a shared player pool that encompasses an entire continent or the entire server where you have 1 or more entire servers worth of players sharing the same potential space.

Sharding is a shared player pool with micro zoned effects to keep loads in a single area down. This is needed in Modern WoW because the spells they use have so darn many effects, not just single action. Also because spells are more frequent in Modern WoW.

At this point there is little we can do to avoid the Layering system; what I am attempting to do is make the transition out of layering as painless as possible for the community.

Unfortunately no my friend, they’re doing something very different than originally planned.

They had originally planned to use Sharding to improve the quality of life in the early leveling zones but scrapped this plan and came up with a new strategy because Sharding is so insanely unpopular.

As a result we now have layering; it’s essentially multiple Virtual machines (servers) that share a player pool and chat / trade / AH.

The reason it has to be removed in phase 2 is simply because they don’t want multiple instances of World Bosses on the same server. So they have to do something come phase 2 when the world bosses are suppose to be added (per content progression).

That is actually a really really good idea, but will it actually tide the flood of players enough to avoid the inevitable need to divide servers?

For what ever non-scientific reason I just “Feel” as if this game is going to grow like crazy and I honestly don’t know why.

Maybe its because my entire guild… LOL no joke just merged with 500+ other players from my server who’re all coming back for Classic WoW…

I am not even kidding when I say my old server is going to take over whatever server we join. The guild group is so large we may even span both factions, and there will be cross faction collusion. Hell even my brother’s elitist guild is joining the ranks.

Here is the crazy thing, I ask people who’re gamers if they plan to play Classic WoW and they all ways “What??” because they simply don’t know yet, and when I explain what is happening they get really stoked up because most of them loved Vanilla.

Been talking in guild chat in another game I play and there’s quite a few that say they will come back.

Hey…vanilla was a good game. People left because the game changed.
Retro games bring in big bucks. Blizzard is behind the curve on this one.
Nintendo made buck when they brought back their old games…sell outs within hours.

That i dont know, but i would think if blizz had a better idea how many are going to play on launch day they could better decide how to approach things.

With the shared sub they have to just be shooting in the dark on estimated launch day pops, dont they?

I purchased the Classic NES soon as it came out… I freaking love that thing…

I even hacked it because it’s essentially a raspberry pi (computer) and added a ton more games.

Easiest hardware hack ever, and runs great!
