Blizz, Hong Kong, Freedom of speech, lets have an Adult discussion

or see that extra super secret ancient egyptian monument not on the tour guides route .

Btw, for the record I know I wanted Blizzard to do something stupid to give me something to laugh about, as they’ve been doing it since WoD over the flying issue, but starting an international diplomatic incident is a little more serious then triggering people over flying or tell them they think they wanted Classic but they really don’t.

 and scare the crap outta the free peoples of the world, who just stood there with jaws slacked, mouths hanging open, saying what the actual flip was that? lol

they fixed it though. whew. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

They made the Blitzchung situation a bit better, but the outrage isn’t just about that. It’s more about the general bowing down to China now.
Especially since they didn’t rescind or even acknowledge the apology made to China. https://www.reddit.com/r/hearthstone/comments/dfjldg/blizzards_official_weibo_account_just_posted_an/

Hi guys, sharing some info.

So do we know WHY people in Hong Kong are protesting in particular?

Just a reminder in case anyone didn’t think to ponder the situation beyond blitzchung.

They initially protested because of the Fugitive Offenders amendment bill.

The bill was proposed by Hong Kong government leaders and it basically lets China have more jurisdiction over Hong Kong and arrest and punish people in Hong Kong if they’re accused of a crime.

So it’d be a bit like the government in another country saying “hey we see you did a crime and we are going to be the ones to punish you”.

So according to wiki the bill was retracted, but protesters that were arrested earlier are still arrested and there’s some who have been injured by the police (cause these protests have been going on since March).

It seems some of the protesters in some of the demonstrations were wrongly injured. And in others some were injured while they were busy breaking into and vandalizing government buildings.

It’s a mess basically.

The media lies and distorts and selectively highlights certain aspects of life in foreign countries, always with it in mind to create the impression that “the US is best” by comparison.

Concentration camps: an inflammatory term, widely misused. Video footage is often stock, or reused to create a certain impression. Notably, you don’t hear the media talking about the open air concentration camp in Israel; you DO hear the media claim that the US maintains concentration camps at the border.

My point is this: China undoubtedly detains people; whether the facilities they are held in are comparable to Auschwitz or not, is the question. I don’t trust the same media that brought us Russiagate, for an accurate report on this. I do not deny it, I just think that reporting on this may be distorted to a great degree in order to create a certain narrative.

Disappearing people? Again. People disappear in this country and around the world every day. No one blames the government, even when we have no idea what happened to them. Reports of people disappearing in other countries may be equally mysterious. It’s one thing to report disappearances; quite another to attribute them to a specific source. I’ve heard the same reports as you and they all lack one thing: evidence.

The media shows you a picture of a boarded up building and tells you “Children are being held in there by border patrol/INS”

How many will ask: how do they know what is going on in a boarded up building?

How many would be shocked to find that the picture is of an old closed canning factory?

Point: you can’t always believe what you see or what you hear.

Constant surveillance: If you live in the USA, YOU are under constant surveillance. Meet Mr. Snowden. Also, the UK is entirely under surveillance and no one talks about that on the evening news. Everyone is under some form of surveillance. The right of privacy is all but dead in most places

Censorship: Plenty of that going around, pretty much everywhere, including here. In China, the government always has exercised a much greater control over “speech” and “press” than has ever been exercised in this country. China is not the US.

Social credit scores are a new thing in China. I don’t know any more about them than what I have read in the American press, so I know basically nothing about them.

Organ harvesting is another boogieman. Literally the only source I have seen for this is on CNN. It sure sounds horrible, doesn’t it? But it’s just a report and there has been no verification of it. It sure as sh!t would be completely appalling if it is really happening!

As for the general authoritarianism of the Chinese government is concerned, that is entirely sovereign China’s business and not exactly earth shattering "news.

But US reporting falls very short of the mark for furnishing verified or even verifiable stories about world events. Hell the US media can’t even honestly report domestic events.

Media serve the agenda of others.

I sure hope you get more than 50 cents for that tripe.

well they shortened the ban to 6 months, it was permanent before that. now he can come back in 6 months and resume in competition. and returned his prize money. it was taken away before that. that’s a huge change.

unless that was the chinese changing their minds on severity of punishment, blizz stuck their neck out on that . actions are louder than words.

Since it’s an audience that you seem to be craving so much, why not hit Twitter or Facebook? Push a hashtag, get it to trend. You are silly to think that even a quarter of players log into the forums at all. There was one on a soapbox in tradechat today on my server group, was wonderful to be able to use that ignore button, sadly there is no longer one here.

Keep the activism that is not gameplay related out of the game, at least that’s how I feel and so it seems Blizzard does too.

I think they also gave the guy his winnings. Not sure of his title, and the 2 casters are not “fired” but on a 6 mo time out.

Too true. This made me LOL

Concentration camps: an inflammatory term, widely misused

These days concentration camps are called ‘detention centers’. But they are concentration camps for all intents and purposes, as they are there to concentrate people in a specific location to keep those ‘undesirable’ people away from the rest of us.

Good to see that they’ve finally given their own statement on the matter, and fixed a few things along the way.

Intensely odd that it was posted in the future. It’s dated the 12th. Today’s the 11th. At least, here in the West it’s the 11th…

And yet, I think of Bergen-Belsen and Auschwitz when I hear the term “concentration camps” and so does everyone else who has been alive long enough to learn about WWII.

So using the term is purposefully inflammatory and intended to conjure images of Na zis and Hitler.

If these places are in fact “detention centers” then why not just call them that?

It’s a big world with a lot of different time zones

because that’s not what they are… detention center is a lie.

We still waiting which is honestly my backlash towards Blizzard. They’ve been silent on the matter for a few days, and while I’m sure attorney talking and whatnot takes a while, SOMETHING would be nice.

LOL no.

But I would be super interested in evidence that these places are comparable to Hitler’s concentration camps.

I’ll wait.

Blizzard already took action.

Shortened all three suspensions to 6 mos and gave the guy his prize money.

Oh they did? I’ve been at work and school so I lose sight on this issue until I’m home and come back to forums xD Is there a link somewhere
