I agree that the creep has been occurring for years. Blame that on legislation and trade “agreements” that are little more than ways to depress labor.
The way to hold an American company to account is by ceasing to finance them. Period. And boycotting only one business will have virtually no effect on the overall world political theatre. You will only actually be putting individuals out of work and doing little damage to the corporation. So you have to go whole hog and few of us are willing to give up the conveniences we have grown dependent upon.
Oh I am sorry to sound so dour, but the fact is, we cannot even properly govern our own country. We do not hold politicians, judges and others accountable for their wrongdoings, although we should. There is one set of rules for those who have, and another for those who don’t.
I am appalled by China and every other oppressive regime (I don’t want to start a fight or I would name names) but realistically change begins at home and I see precious little of that going on. I do hear a lot of noise, but see little action by the average person.
That is probably more because people just don’t have the time to become truly involved. This is by design. I believe people are frustrated and many, disgusted with tyranny, but few are willing or able to do anything significant about it.
It’s kind of like trying to bail out the ocean with a teaspoon.
Maybe, but World of Warcraft is one of the few forms of escapism I have from the crazy political world we live in today, and I’ll be damned if I let China screw it up with their censorship without a fight
I wish I had the time and energy to make my video game into a political statement, but I just dont care enough to get into other countries politics.
IF those people are oppressed, then THEY need to start a revolution now.
My video game has nothing to do with their freedom or lack thereof
Actually, I have successfully defended many similar provisions in court. The court will always view the four corners of the document and evaluate the exercise of discretion based on the reasonable expectations of the parties.
No reasonable HS contestant would have believed that the HS tourny agreement gave them license to air their political views on Blizzard’s dime or forum.
Any legal challenge here would most likely be bounced out of court in the pleading stage.
So we came to 8964? How do you know the gov did not response?
According to a protest leader Qindong Kong :“The gov set up several times of meetings with us and at the end of May, I tried to persuade the protest on the square to leave but another leader Lin Chai stopped me, and she asked the students to stay in the square.”
Also, according to the interview by CNN of Lin Chai who is now living in U.S.
“Yes, we need blood, I think blood will remind people for what we are doing”.
“No, I will not stay on the square, I have to leave before they send troops”.
There are hundreds of people who died in this event, including protesters, citizens, and soldiers, that’s true and I will not defend for CCP of having done this. But such kind of tragedy should not be simply summarized to “We fight for good, they are bad”.
sounds like he knowingly broke the rules and blizzard enforced them to the letter, actually.
Blizzard Entertainment, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, found Blitzchung to be in breach of a rule stipulating that any action by a player that “brings you into public disrepute, offends a portion or group of the public, or otherwise damages Blizzard image” is punishable by a suspension and the withholding of all prize money.
Obviously its hard to express myself, as there are things that I feel pretty strongly about…
The issue seems to me, that you disagree with excessive force, I suppose I can understand that point of view, I am not saying that if someone squirted me with a water pistol I would incinerate them with a flamethrower, but then again, I like water…but I do think that when ‘peaceful protesters’ harass police and so on, destroy property and business, it doesn’t give me any confidence in them or their cause.
Regarding the specific thing mentioned about China being brutal in its response to protesters, I am not saying that the Tiananmen Square thing didn’t happen, to me I simply refer to the specific situation of someone throwing a rock at a police officer, in armed gear or no that’s still disrespectful behavior, just as Hong Kong protesters have been destroying business and property, even if I was to support their cause, you say that you don’t want me in any position of power, but do you really want someone that trashes property, disrupts people’s daily business in positions of power is what I’m asking?
Which, hilariously, only makes it look worse, because the thread has 6811 posts (at this moment), rather than just a dozen+ threads of hundreds of posts each.
All the more reason Vaara, to leave politics at the door.
I believe Blizzard’s action was within their rights based on the ToS and was motivated by profits and cash. But I don’t believe that Blizzard actually supports Chinese politics or tyranny.
I don’t either, but I must confess, I still buy Chinese products.
Might also be a troll farm employee. They get paid to inject themselves into these things and overwhelm the comments with messages in support of whoever is paying for the party. I would say that there’s going to be some on this thread and you can probably pick them out of the crowd if you look hard enough. Troll farms are a favorite method of authoritarian regimes trying to create the illusion of online support within western democracies. On a site like the Blizzard forums it is very easy to do.
Saying it’s pointless to call out abuse in other places because you don’t live in a perfect society is a very destructive (and flawed) argument. Degree matters. Also no group of people can ever be morally or ethically perfect so your saying that we should never try to improve (and yes I realize that’s very subjective) or critisize others because you can never hold some fictious high ground? That’s how the world ends for everyone.
No, I am correcting your statement that “voting with your wallet never works”, it has and does work.
Yes, China sucks and their censorship and oppression is wrong.
I don’t believe that Blizzard is supporting that by enforcing their rules to prevent their events from descending into anarchy though.
If my employer was having a news story done about winning a safety award again, and I shout “IMPEACH TRUMP!” or “TRUMP DID NOTHING WRONG!” in the back of the shot, I would fully expect to be fired immediately.
Not because of whichever view I espoused, but because it is not the proper venue or timing for airing the view.
I could go on with more examples, but I feel it would be lost on you, as you seem to be more looking for things to be outraged about than actual civil discourse.
I am not saying that I think China is perfect, but say that WW3 happened after the nuclear holocaust was over, the survivors established an American style government in China and Russia, would that truly be a perfect world? American government has lots of skeletons in its closet. Do you like Trump, or hate Trump?
