Black Screen/Driver Crash

Really wish a dev/engineer could make note of this issue. It’s been around for a loooooong time.

So I found the fix for this, I hope it works for others

Go to your Wow directory > game version (classic_era or retail ) > Logs

and delete the gx.txt file
There is a version check mismatch in this file that causes wow to hang with AMD devices, forcing it to re pull the data fixed it on myself and my daughters computers.

You SURE that might have fixed it?

This sounds more related to the dx 12 game hang on launch issue and not the driver crash issue.

6950XT user here… Still having this issue today. Pretty absurd.

My AMD driver updated yesterday, not surprisingly black screen has returned, both yesterday after the update, and randomly once just now. Both times, it spins in the darkness for 4-5 minutes then goes to the character selection screen. What an interesting bug!

Also been having this AMD driver timeout issue for the past week or two. brand new PC, 7800 XT. It started off freezing up and the entire pc would restart. Over time I’ve tried all the recommendations…DDU, reinstall drivers, MPO, disable hardware acceleration…etc. literally all of it.

I installed Linux last night and I’m going to see if i still get crashes. If not, it’s a driver issue. If I do , then I guess im playing on Linux from now on.

Just psa guys, please send multiple Bug reports to AMD through the radeon software, we need to overwhelm them with bug reports on this issue.

Am curious if Linux is stable would go back (am thinking Debian but I used to WoW on Manjaro). My stable rig has 7800XT Win10 2nd latest driver but the 7900XTX on latest driver Win11 (will try rollback also) was crashing DX11 all day yesterday just dragonracing around casual content. The earlier Win11 driver on the XTX would still crash DX11 every now and then but not nearly as often. It hangs and crashes basically.

So… blizzard… it has been a month… Is NVIDIA paying for this sabotage or something lol.

Game is unplayable for me at the moment… too many crashes while in Rated games. 6900xt … I’ve tried drivers dating back to August. I get the same frequency of crashes in DX11 or DX12.

I have zero issues in other titles

Seems to be happening with NVIDIA too, keep crashing with last patch.

Just had my display driver crash while wow was running minimized in the background and I had Chrome running. It did the usual with video becoming unresponsive for 10 seconds or so before getting a black screen and having the display driver restart. This time I got a message afterwards saying “World of Warcraft was unable to start up 3d acceleration” and the program crashed, all while just idling in the background. It’s insane to me that there hasn’t been any sort of fix for these driver issues in months. You’d think someone would prioritize this especially with it occuring most frequently on higher end cards.

Strange for me, I did the dx11 switch, and the game runs horribly now. And as some have said, which didn’t work for me before, but now does…let it sit for about 5min, but it still runs horribly…whats worse, i rolled back the driver, and it’s still doing it.

I want to add that these crashes only happen for me while im in the open world, in both classic and retail versions. Haven’t crashed yet while in a dungeon or raid. Also, the way the “crash” happens is preventing me from submitting bug reports to blizzard or AMD after it happens, since things either recover eventually or the dialogue that pops up is not giving an error submit option. Not sure what else I can do besides post on these forums and AMD’s forums which I’ve done already.

i keep gettins randomly spike lags and it crashed the game as well i have 6700xt amd

i’ve been dealing with blackscreen while playing. its been going on for almost a week now. some times i can play for a few hours before it happens but most of the time i can do anything because itll blackscreen. every since sunday it seems. ive been looking all over for a fix or work around but cant find anything that works.

If the black screen your refering to is a gpu driver crash, the solution has been to switch to dx 11 or dx 11 legacy.

Been getting error #132 with dx 11 and legacy as well.
