Big Iron Fishing Pole

The big pole, the BiS pole.

The “Big Iron Fishing Pole” is the best fishing pole obtainable for alliance, unless you are able to win the STV fishing extravaganza. I do not believe I will have even a slight chance at winning the event, so I consider this fishing pole to the best I could ever obtain in classic wow.

Today I thought I would give it my best shot to obtain it. The pole is obtained from "Shellfish Trap"s, which spawn just outside of Shadowprey Village, in Desolace. I’m a night elven druid and Shadowprey Village is a horde troll city. During my whole attempt I did not see even 1 other alliance hero.

According to online sources, the droprate of the pole is 1.5%, meaning that the expected number of traps I would need to open would be 67. Sixty seven is a big number, especially when talking about doing something right next to a horde village.

I started out just casually opening traps, hoping for the best. It quickly became clear that this would not be something that could be casually completed. I did not keep track of each trap at the start, if I had to say, I opened at least 20 before I started recording the number that I opened. However, for the sake of argument, let’s assume that I opened 10 before I started recording each trap I opened. After opening those 10 traps, I realized I wanted to keep track of how many I would open. So after I opened each trap, I drew a line on a piece of paper next to the computer.

Opening the traps was not easy to do. There were lots of hordes around, and also many mobs. In particular I would like to give a special mention to Lerus, the hunter with a boar pet. He kept ganking me several times, and also killed me at least twice. May you face the wrath of Elune whenever you meet any alliance in the world.

I must have died at least 5 times, a number much lower than it would have been if I hadn’t had aquatic form to run away, and potions to survive. I used at least 20 potions in my endeavor. The corpse run is around 3 minutes, slightly faster since I’m night elf and have wisp form. In total, I spent over 5 hours opening shellfish traps.

After five hours, I opened a trap, which looked just like all the rest, but this one contained the golden, wonderful, strong, “Big Iron Fishing Pole”. I screamed. Panted for a couple of seconds, then looted it, realizing i was in danger of being ganked. I have 59 marks on my paper, meaning that I opened at least 59+10 traps in this adventure (I attach a picture of my marks).

This all ended less than 1 hour ago and I’m still kind of shaky writing this. I can’t remember the last time an item drop made me feel like this. I love WoW, it feels so amazing. This all happened on Grobbulus, the best server there is. No other server has RP like us.

I attach a picture as proof that I got it. Have a wonderful day everyone!

TLDR; I got the “Big Iron Fishing Pole” after spending 5h+ outside shadowprey village opening shellfish traps.

Got mine last night. Didn’t keep track of how many I opened, I had almost 100 shellfish though by the time I was done.

Sad part is when I got back I checked the AH, there was one posted for 14g…could have farmed that much faster than I farmed those traps.

Congrats from a fellow Grobber!

I should mention, I did this while being level 35. Which is why it took so long. There were usually around 3 hordes swimming around there. I think they do a quest there also. And they would easily drive me off or kill me.

Yes, it’s a questing area. Horde have to open the traps as part of the quest.

Congratulations to you.

Well I get that you have to open traps, but why do you have to kill poor night elves like me?

This HAS to be a lie. Please?

No lie lol I didn’t even know what the trap was for, just saw the thing and was like, “Ooh! A thing to open!”

Well, the moonlight shines upon the guilty, and the innocent alike.

Guilty!? I didn’t murder nobody! That’s not to I wouldn’t have tried were I on a PvP server >_>

It isn’t BiS … just saying.

It’s not just a quest area. It’s a repeatable HORDE-ONLY quest that everytime you turn-in 5 shellfish obtained from the traps you get 55 silver. It’s not a bad area to farm gold for your level 40 mount when you’re in the upper 30s or even hit 40 and don’t have it yet.

It’s a saying from Elune. I interpret it to mean, sometimes even though you don’t work hard, you get great things, and sometimes, even if you work hard, you don’t get what you deserve.

I spent several hours doing the same. Many, many stacks of shellfish later I realized I could have farmed twice the gold in that time needed to buy it from the AH. I was ill prepared and competing with tauren druids. This camp broke me… Man I love classic.

You know, that quest for the shellfish is repeatable too XD 50s per 5 shellfish. I love being horde lol
Edit: missed that someone already pointed this out lol

Wow! I wish I could sell my shellfish to the horde! I even deleted like 40 of them. Still have 42 left.

This took me two shellfish griding runs to get but it certainly pays off. You don’t have to find limited stock or an engineer, for instance, since the readily available +75 fishing baits are now +100 with this rod!
