So we shouldn’t take his opinion seriously because of bias.

Gotcha.

Sounds like you didn’t watch the video or even skimmed it. Kevin Jordan was the lead designer on classes, spells and abilities (not the math though) His comments are through the lens of a designer, and in some points in the video, he even praise Ion. I watched the whole, and he doesn’t sound biased to me. But by the sound of it, you’ve already made your mind up, and seen in that light, you’ll probably end up confirm your own bias anyways.

He’s a Vanilla designer.

Vanilla designers (that no longer work for Blizzard) along with Classic players here in these forums make it their goal to bash BFA (and players that enjoy it) at every opportunity. It’s their (and your) M.O.

He’s no different.

The game has always been extremely accessible to the casual player. The casual could get started and have a great time with years worth of things to do. It was fun for all levels of engagement. For the casual player, there was always deeper that one could go, there were always things to spur them on, there were always things that they couldn’t attain until they made a personal breakthrough of some kind.

The original developers understood that the casual gamer was not stupid. That with challenge presented at all levels of the game, all styles of play could be fun.

The modern game treats everyone but the elite as though they are dolts. The fun has been wrung out of it for nearly all play styles other than hard core raider.

Show me one post where I bash on BFA! You can’t, because I haven’t. People can be objective despite having previous involvement with the product. If anything, your bias is showing through here, by already condenming the man before you even have heard what he has to offer. That’s ignorance at a top-level.

It’s C3PO and R2D2 designing WoW!

@41+ minutes he makes some great points

He truly does shine light on their abject disconnect and lack of knowledge of good game design. Which is scary, given that classic decisions are being made by them.

I’m going to guess “exceedingly selective reading,” because holy crap, what a silly claim.

It’s very simple.

Battle for Azeroth is a product. It’s still making money, a top three money maker for Blizzard despite lower player numbers. Its goal is to keep MAU numbers up.

World of Warcraft (Vanilla) was a game. It exceeded numbers and made money due to that success. They wanted 500,000 players that was “success” to them.

BFA already has goals set to them by Legion. They need to hit those numbers that it’s previous game hit. Vanilla didn’t need to do that.

Valid points for many players and well stated.

But for those who enjoy adventuring in a traditional RPG style world with friends, Classic is much more friendly: simply create a character to begin the content. It doesn’t get any more accessible than that.

In BfA, slogging through mind-numbing discarded filler to get to the “current” material is not casual friendly from that perspective.

Lore is just beyond useless there.

“Yes Ion!” “Of course Ion!” You bet Ion!" You’re the best Ion!" “BFA rocks Ion!”

Good grief.

Uncertain what your point is. Their fundamental game making philosophy towards modern WoW is the same philosophy being used when making classic decisions. The video shines light on why Ion and Lore types should be as far away from the decision making regarding classic as possible.

Watch the video, your comment is uninformed.

My point was very simple.

BFA is a product being made to continue to have similar MAU figures to legion. That’s what they measure as success now. Whereas Vanilla wasn’t like that.

Does it trouble you that those currently making the decisions for classic have that philosophy and use that metric?

edit: Did you actually watch the video this thread is about?

Yeah I watched the video.

No, it doesn’t trouble me because Classic wasn’t mentioned in the quarterly earnings call at all so it’s not even on the radar. It’s going to expand MAUs for sure, but they’re not counting it as a major release.

Regardless, decisions being made for classic are being made by individuals with a fundamental disconnect as to what the measurement of “fun” is. In essence the “most clarity” speaks to number of people doing content rather than numbers of people enjoying content.
