Best tank for M+?

I’m gonna gear up one of my tanks. I have 'em all except Warrior… but I could use the excuse to level my warrior I guess.

What’s the flavor-of-the-expac in terms of tanking the AoE-stunfest that is M+?

Warrior, unless you get necrotic weeks then monks shine with things like leg sweep, roll, ring of peace, roll, ox statue, roll some more.

So not pally, huh? I was hoping for pally because I like the look.

Pally does fine in m+ and unless your pushing 15+ it’s not really going to matter which tank you choose.

But if you want the meta tank it’s warrior.

P.S. i tank m+ on my paladin and really enjoy it but I stick to the 8-12 range.

Pally is a strong option. Definitely up there, just not at the level of prot warrior or brewmaster.

But really play the tank that is the most fun for you unless you plan to be doing keys 20+

Thanks.

Yeah, I’m not planning to push super far. Maybe 10… I don’t like the timer gameplay really, and I’m assuming later it’s more about avoiding damage by doing nonsense like rolling away (and stunning) which sounds boring.

Was more just curious what would be the easiest for M1-10. Which sounds like still Warrior…

And always remember how they like to nerf Prot warrior. You could get leveled, geared, then it could happen. So play what you like.

That’s a fair point.

I remember when during legion they said “we don’t like nerfing classes during a raid tier” in regards to guardian druids solo tanking mythic NH bosses during NH. So the next day they nerfed prot warrior’s damage (including abilities like heroic throw) for no reason.

Ah blizzard, the consist in inconsistency

I dunno. I pug the majority of my m+ keys and I prefer it on my paladin because the Paladin has really strong “oh crap” buttons. When you have unknown quality of party members sometimes having those buttons can save a wipe.

The warrior is really strong in m+ but I personally find it can’t save bad situations caused by sub par party members as well.

If you’re in a good group then the warrior will preform better but not to the extent that I would force myself to play one over the paladin.

Pretty much. Warrior is the meta for MDI and highest keys because of the damage they do where every increase in DPS matters.

If you like pally tanking, IMO they are better with pugs in the 10 range because of the smooth damage you take, self heals, and oh crap buttons you have to save yourself or others. Warriors have probably the worst self sustain of the tanks, but are beast DPS when paired with good heals.

While they’re not the preferred tank, they do pretty fine actually.

You have a lot of utility with Light/Hand of the Protector, Blessing of Sacrifice, of Protection/Spellwarding, Lay on Hands.

You also have some good mitigation with Ardent Defender, Guardian of Ancient Kings.

You can safely pull a group with Avenger’s Shield, keep them aggroed with Consecration and even upgrade it to slow your targets which comes in handy in weeks like Necrotic.

Paladin is the best defensively, and despite what the first reply says, is significantly more reliable at removing things like Necrotic because BoP and Divine Shield both immediately remove all stacks without having to move.

Things like this really remind me I need to get more practice tanking. Love the people in my guild but never on at the same time. Really wanted to get into M+ and Rated PVP this expansion but hasn’t worked out so far. Prot is enjoyable enough to play. Ravager build for M+ still a thing?

It’s been awhile, but I actually liked bringing blood dks along, personally.

the one played by a competent person

Death knights are a lot of fun and definitely capable of doing even the highest of keys. Your choice really should be something you enjoy though because individually grinding out the azerite essences is not fun.

Pally and DK are always strong at some point and never bottom of the barrel. Just see what your guild uses for key runs and talk to those tanks. If you’re going to pug then there aren’t really enough tanks to go around so any tank class gets invited.

basically brewmaster, warriors and paladins are the best choices. after that it’s DH > guardian > DK.

I know personally I refuse to run with DKs. Their health is so bouncy that it’s just not fun to run with. The healer is too stressed out.

I’ve only tanked on pala and dh. Pala feels off and slow for me. Dh is good mvolity
