And or access to large amounts of silver or copper or gold…ie money…buying food is not cheap…why you should learn fishing too save fish for many many hunter pets…
I would say a pet Druid or Rogue would be the best hunter pet
(I know Cats are good for PvP (brokentooth is best if he still has his magic attack speed), For leveling anything that can take some hits would prolly be best)
I really like Bears better. But I’m going with Boar, because boars have more armor, and bears have more health. In classic, for pets, armor is better than health.
So my cat will be my main, my boar will be for fighting elites, etc. and I’ll have a wolf for raiding.
You are not worried about prions or anything from feeding your boar pig meat?

I like carrion birds. Extra armor with no damage penalty like most tank pets. They learn bite, growl, dive, cower, claw and family ability is really nice AOE debuff to AP.

Humar the Pridelord is the black lion in the barrens, a level 23 rare, is my favorite. The white lion from a quest summon is my second.

if you have a mage friend conjured food is ‘bread’ so can get a stack from a mage and not worry about feeding him vendorable food. sure it’s not all that much but every copper helps getting the gold for your mounts.

Any pet will do but nothing beats a boar early on and they eat almost any food item including Mage food.
Boars have a dmg or stamina decrease from the modifier cant remember which. But just because they eat anything doesnt mean they are great especially horde side. Yeah they are by razor hill but to get additional ranks of charge you would have to travel to redridge.
yes boars do have a dmg penalty but also have a hp and armor boost. they are tanky, not as tanky as turtle/crab but a good ‘balanced’ pet. Same with Bears slightly more HP slightly less armor than boars same damage penalty. I could not find it but there was a post somewhere back in 2004-2005 that having a cat from 10-60 and just buying vendor food was like 50g or something. I would rather lose a bit of dps gain a bit of tanking on my pet leveling and save up that 50g of course cooking/fishing would reduce that to almost zero but takes time to farm the food.
You can skip rank 2 and just wait till level 24-26 and get rank 3 from a RFK run. easier to get rank 2 for alli for sure but not the end of the world. after rank 3 it’s the same for both factions. I usually get a bear for 1-60 then hunt down rare cats for dps.

Something to keep in mind.
The road to 60 is long, do you want to listen to a boar squeal all day, a bear roar?
I prefer cats and find their roar less obtrusive.
(side note : If you play with sound on do you want to listen to a gun all day long too? They are frickin loud. I love bows and wouldnt switch to a gun even if the stats are a little better, the game is supposed to be fun and enjoyable)
