Best early pet for hunter? Bear?

Is bear considered the best first pet for hunters (at 10)?

Bear or Boar …the boar will stun mobs…for tanking a Turtle is good too. Boar will stun players in pvp too.

I always grabbed a crab from the beaches of Darkshore.

Yeah bear is good, you’ll quickly find a cat though. Cats hit quick but a Boar/Bear or anything with charge is great. You won’t get special abilities until later on. For example you’ll get shell shield on a turtle from Blackfathom Depths at around level 24 if I recall… You can’t tame anything higher than your level.

Personally, I would get most of my tames from dungeons/raids. Bat from ZG is a prime example, but the boars in RFK are nice. The turtle boss in BFD is pretty good and there’s good ones in Maraudon too. I think the final winner of all though is a Blackrock Howler from BRD, so you get the highest rank Furious Howl. Abilities are not on all tames, some come much later, I think you get cat prowl in the 40s, though I can barely remember that far back lol

Durotar tiger or the Rake until Broken Tooth. Casters beware!
Edit to add: I start wity that encrusted crab in the NE part of durotar for that sweet level 2 claw.

I personally get a cat and make sure it’s trained on Growl and its stamina and armor skills ASAP. When set up properly, cats hit hard and quick and will hold aggro on most mobs pretty well.

I like wolves, and you can get Furious Howl at level 10

cats are pretty good general dps pets, although you don’t really learn cool abilities for them until level 30 or so

The biggest thing is that a lot of low level beasts have no abilities at all. Make sure you tame a pet that at least has something. Beyond that, make sure you visit the hunter pet trainer… not to be confused with the hunter class trainer. They are usually close by.

Yup and BM talents beef em up really well. No issues leveling with a cat. Might have to toss a heal or two but that’s part of being a good pet owner. I hate my pet dying more than my hunter.

Petopia should still be accurate.

Boar eats anything. That’s great for a lowbie, so you can feed it whatever you loot. Just be sure to have at least a stack (20) of food when you first tame it, as new pets are extremely hungry. And feed them when their happiness icon goes to “content,” never letting it reach “angry.”

Yea. Part of the reason I like hunter so much is tracking down my pet’s abilities as I level.
I’ll have a kitty and a wolf but won’t get the wolf until later. I go after my leveling cat’s abilities as we level up.

If you are dwarf and pve I would grab Boar. Bear is very acceptable though if you just want a bear.

For Orc and troll you get the surfer crawler on the shore by the zep tower for bite 2. Then tame a cat when you enter the barrens. At lvl 15 tame a turtle by the oasis for claw 2 and teach it to your cat along with bite 2.

Use the cat until lvl 32 and switch it out with a tiger in stv to learn dash. Boars are more of an alliance pet because they can keep the charge lvld easier.

That’s a good point, too. Ease of upkeep can be a factor sometimes, especially at low levels when your access to food is limited.

I guess boar charge would be very valuable early on so that your pet gets in an extra attack as you move from mob to mob

For me its the Boar. As starting out you have no money and pigs eat anything including meats you get off other pigs. You running out of bag space ? oh look an apple … give it the pig.
