I have been interested in tanking for a bit, mostly for M+ and I was wondering what is a good tank to learn with that is also wanted in M+?
DH or bear
Paladin because they are also good to solo level with as well
It’s not a tank if it doesn’t have a rage bar.
I may be bias but Bear seems very straightforward.
Lots of health. And you can do 90% of your job with just these few buttons:
Mangle + Thrash to build Rage
Ironfur to spend that rage
Maul to spend that rage if you don’t need Ironfur or want to eek out a bit more DPS
Swipe for filler
And that is really it.
You have some “oh s$@t” buttons, Barkskin, Berserk, Survival Instincts, Frenzied Regen that you can use when you’re in a bind, or taking a lot of damage.
Lastly your battle Rez. Prioritize:
Other Tank (if raiding) > Healer > Top DPS
10 abilities max to worry about unless you want to get into owl/cat weaving.
11 if you count your Convoke.
Edit: Oh and mobility, they’ve got great mobility. Party/Raid wide speed buff that really helps on avoiding mechanics, or kitty dash if you need to get away quick, and a pounce to get back in quick, travel form if in outdoor dungeons/raids, just try to pop barkskin before shifting because your health takes a nose dive when out of bear form. And not too bad to quest in if you don’t want to switch specs. Especially helpful with “Kill X” quests because you can aggro all of them and one Convoke takes them all out.
Druid is an awesome class, and I recommend it to every new player. Guardian is good to learn.
It’s not a tank if you can’t fill it up with fuel and connect it to your home’s furnace.
Paladin. It’s pretty hard to die as a paladin, and it’s fun. I’m scared to invest too much time into the class because Blizz will nerf them to the ground if they find out I’m having fun… It’s happened before!
I guess Bear
but Blood DK is probably the most “I WQ, PvP and do everything as Tank spec” of the available tanks.
Blood DK essentially plays like a DPS with several Tanks CDs, its just not currently very strong. What im trying to say is from what i have seen people roll the other Tanks specs to specifically tank, however people roll BDK as there general day to day playing spec.
With the current patch and how much you care to min-max, DH, pally, monk would be the top 3. Druid is easy to grasp.
Again with current patch, I would avoid DK and warrior.
I’m working on a pally tank Alt and it’s pretty fun. Still gearing up now, but I threw him in torghast layer 5 at like 160 ilvl with 148 sword and shield and it went way better than I had expected.
DH by a mile
Pal is still my fav, but I re-rolled since I like tanking more than luring and kiting
Jesus so many bad answers. It’s paladin. The single easiest beginner tank. Some will say dh is easier but I disagree. OP asked for the ONE easiest.
Bear - lots of buttons and too many cool downs
Dh - easy also but not quite as easy to be a good one, it’s almost a tie. ***most desired in m+
Warrior - easyish but flops if you don’t know much about it
Dk - easy but takes lots of damage so needs good skill to manage cool downs and mitigation. pretty bad right now .
Brewmaster - hard, don’t bother if you’re a beginner
The best way to learn any tank is to start a new character and lvl 100% in dungeons. You will start with 2 buttons, and then 3, and then 4, so on. If you do it that way, all specs are equally easy to learn. I’ve done it with all of them.
Honestly, all the tanks are pretty easy to play with the exception of BDK.
I would just pick whichever one you like the most thematically. All tanks are viable as long as you can play them correctly.
mechanically, I think palladin is easiest and has the best abilities to cover-up your mistakes (LoH/Divine Shield, BoF).
DH is by far the best, imo, b/c it is so mobile. but I don’t think it’s as easy as pally.
bear uses more active healing and you need to monitor your defenses a little more, imo. but “rotationally,” it’s easy. setting up your bars for all of the shape shifting forms can be a real hassle getting started.
I usually tank with DK, personally, but that’s just because I’m used to it. Also, at the time, it was the only tank that really did damage and self-healed so that I didn’t have to duel spec to quest, but that was ages ago (like…wrath/cata era! lol).
basic tanking with any class is pretty /faceroll, tbh. I prefer the tool kit of DH and Pally, but DK and Druid also come with brez.
Lol what???
Bear is second easiest… not sure what game you’re playing. You can tank with three or four abilities. With a couple emergency abilities for harder content. It’s only more difficult than paladin because it’s more gear dependent?
The fact you can sneak around almost makes it the easiest.
I’m currently levelling a Guardian Druid, she is currently level 52 and roughly ilvl 80 or so. I have not yet tanked a dungeon but I can say that I have taken on groups of two or three elites of my level and soloed them easily without ever dropping below 90% health.
I am not precisely an expert in tanking, in fact it is my weakest role by a landslide. VDH was my first tank and i loved it on its day, but nowadays i dont find it the easiest. Imo, Druids and Paladins are the best beginner tanks. Both have their relatively distinct playstyle, but their nice mix of mitigation and self heal (druid has more mitigation than heal and pally is the opposite), along with nice group utility makes them a good choice for learning tanks. Just keep in mind that paladins are significantly squishier below level 32 when you unlock the WoG buff based on your missing HP.
Definitely VDH and Warriors are more difficult, BrM with Stagger can be both a blessing and a curse (do it well and nothing kills you, do it bad and you keep taking damage the whole time), and i find BDK to be the hardest, because unlike all the other tanks you rely solely on self heal and a mistake on rotation can kill you.
