Beginner Mistweaver Tips

hey y’all!

I recently geared this mw in order to casually heal 2s/3s/BGs/RBGs with my friends, nothing serious. i’ve gotten the PvE side of mistweaving down (sort of) but I’m curious about the pvp side.

obviously healing is a lot harder than dpsing, so maybe it’s a good idea to ask for generic pvp healing advice as well!

i’m used to pvping from a dps perspective where most of the time I just do my PvE rotation and press a CC button every so often. healing feels a lot more reactive, but I do feel like I have more “control” overall.

  • What are some common mistweaver comps, specifically for 2s? can i just play with anything, or are some dps REALLY bad to play with?
  • should i be telling my partner(s) to use defensives, or should that be up to them?
  • what essences should I be playing?

if you guys can think of anything else I should know, please hit me with it

Hello, you can check this channel, he has a lot of beginner tips for MW.

Best comps are probably MW/DH, MW/DKS etc.

Play in 2s mw/arms, mw/dh, mw/dk, and mw/ww.

Look up Mysticall the monk on youtube - pretty solid MW monk that even critiques your game play on a Monday if you record it for him.

beyond generic arena things, mistweaver skillcap is the mobility.

hi! could you elaborate a little on this? at very low rankings/normal BGs it feels really easy to kite people as mw, but obviously people aren’t using their tools to the best of their ability

i usually use port in response to enemy cds, like if a rogue pops vendetta on me or a mage starts casting gpy, I just transcend behind a pillar or something. that seems like a basic use for it. can you recommend any other uses or tips that you’ve seen?

Tip for kiting DH’s in arena

Take short port, disarm and short cocoon.
Also take song of chi ji.

With the DH rotate the CC cooldowns and your port that you have and always wait for blade dance to be used before using any ability

Make sure you are always in range of your port
Can pretty much kite a DH indefinitely doing the below

Port
Incap into Song
Stun
Disarm
By this time your port will be back up and you can rinse repeat.
You also have wall if you need, and that’s not even using your rolls.

An example for DH’s anyway, can work for most melee.

Hope this helps.

A really bad DPS to play with would be assa rogue. Both classes just have way better healers/dps they can run with(maybe a better comp now since both classes are just really strong rn).

  2. Yes, your job as the healer during an arena match is to coordinate your teams defensives. Think of your partners cds as your own and try to rotate those cds as best you can. Sometimes you can just say anything!! if your in a tight situation and your not sure what to call.

  3. Essences/talents are matchup dependent.

So versus casters id always take short bubble, counteract magic, and aura mastery (zen focus tea), consider dome of mist if its a purge heavy team.

Versus melee teams, id look into short port, and disarm, along with short bubble again. Sometimes refreshing breeze is good too.

Essences also vary,
Versus rogues(in 2s) you prolly want conflict major, lucid dreams minor, rising tide minor.

Against dks id take lucid and mana traits as major.

Sometimes cruciable major is just fun to do damage with.

Some helpful macros:
arena123 macros

#showtooltip Paralysis
/cancelaura Roll (or chi torpedo)
/cast [target=arena1] Paralysis

#showtooltip provkoe
/cast[target=arena1] Provoke

The last one is a taunt macro to keep things like druids and rogues in combat w/o needing to use a gcd really. Lastly, use things like mana tea and thunderfocus tea early save a ton of mana. Also as the healer try to call out when and who your dps need to stop from ccing/reccing yourself.

Crucible Major essence every 2s game. Conflict/Memory minor.

mw plays best with melee specs but can work with destro if u dont mind kiting into open all game while lock tees off on them with roots/coils/fears/shadowfurys

  • should i be telling my partner(s) to use defensives, or should that be up to them?

you dont necessarily need to call their defensives but u definately should call when your about to get cc’d if u can see it or if your in a cc so they can pay attention for chains

  • what essences should I be playing?

You basically use conflict and strife, crucible of flame, Vitality conduit, and life-binder’s invocation. you rotate these 4 into your major. conflict if you are going to be trained by classes with stuns, vitality for 3’s when you arent the target, crucible for 2’s when your arent the target

as for traits on your azerite gear u want 3x secret infusion and atleast 1 burst of life, rest dont really matter

stack vers and mastery, shoot for like 25% vers if u can. using rsk with triple secret infusion can get u like 35% vers ontop of your base% so u can get 60% for about 10 sec and if your using conflict major and get stunned the defensive portion of your vers is doubled so u can have like 60% damage reduction for the duration of the stun if u pay attention

Mistweavers are the ultimate dampener as they are insanely mana efficient, with the best throughput in the game but really struggle to provide any kind of offense, and have sub par CC options. Definitely the worst offensive healer in the game.

There is a skill cap with their mobility in that you need to learn how to rotate it well…someone posted earlier about kiting Demon Hunters. It’s really really easy to make demon hunters look incredibly dumb in the arena as they chase you endlessly and get zero up time on you. Basically you play short port, short cocoon and disarm and rotate port, into encap, into disarm, into leg sweep…and by the time those are up port is up again. This isn’t even including ring of peace, Song, your rolls or wall.

You’re even more particularly ridiculous on maps where you can abuse the Z axis (blades edge, Mugambala, dalaran sewers, even tigers peak to a degree). Blades edge ill put my port in the middle of the bridge between the two ramps and roll off, then port back up. Mugambala you can run off the ledge and port up or leave your port in the starting room and run up top then port back.

Choosing between ring and song really depends on the map…you can rop people off the bridge on blades edge, or port into the starting room in mugambala, and when they follow you in you RoP them in the room and book it. You can also use rop as an interupt. Dalaran sewers you put your port in the middle of the map, roll down below then port back up.

If you find yourself out of mobility just use fort brew. Against Demon hunters sometimes i’ll just tank kicks at high health for the hell of it, roll away, and by the time he’s on me again the kick is over cause it’s so short. This is a strat I’ll use on a lot of people. I’ll try to juke the kick but if I tank it i’ll just roll away.

Life cocoon is another thing you need to use liberally…the cooldown is admittedly broken for how powerful the ability is. Sometimes if I find myself in a bad spot with no trinket and no mobility with a DPS on me i’ll just cocoon high. That way it gives me time for my mobility to come back. A lot of times i’ll try to bait kicks while i’m in cocoon cause if they kick me it really doesn’t matter and a lot of people seem to kick while in in cocoon even though it makes no sense.

Learning to get value out of your mana is tricky too because monks core spells are not at all mana efficient. Using thunder focus tea (with the 2 charge tier talent) and using it almost exclusively on vivifies is huge. It’s basically two free heals every 25 seconds. Using mana tea early and often especially when cooldowns are up and big damage is coming is something you need to do as well.
A lot of times, especially if I have my trinket still, i’ll cocoon my DPSer high if they blow cooldowns on him just so I don’t have to spend the mana topping him…the cocoon will last the duration of the cooldown and I save the mana, as opposed to trying to heal it and then maybe cocooning low anyway.

Knowing when they are coming for CC is another time to learn to pre-cocoon someone if you have no trinket (or if you want to save it). It’s generally pretty obvious when someone is coming for CC…I just cocoon my DPSer before it goes of and they’re fine. Similarly, if you can tell someone is coming for a go on you and they have a stun up, pre wall the stun to help negate the damage.

Always keep mystic touch up on the kill, or both targets if you’re playing with melee…you can do this by using jade lightning for a half second.

Demon hunters and Death Knights are easily the best classes to play with because their win conditions are pressuring the healer and generally they just need time, not CC support. As a monk you bring almost no CC and extended survivability, so it’s a perfect match. They’re super tanky and most matches aren’t the kill target because of this but mistweavers are also an incredibly poor choice as a kill target so you leave the other team left sort of picking which way they want to lose. Plus DH’s win conition is literally Mana burning…so the game will end eventually. You just need to stay alive…and monks are great at that.

Death knights are arguably better than DH’s because they take your already insane mobility and double down on it with the best slow in the game. Plus they are super tanky themselves, and you have the best throughput in the game, so you’ll have an incredibly easy time keeping them up because your heals are so strong and they are so tanky. Not to mention they are great at surviving melee AND casters…where as demon hunters are definitely vulnerable to casters.

That being said I almost always want to play with a class that is going to encourage the melee to train me as the healer. I spend way less mana healing myself cause I can get away then I would healing my DPSer tanking damage. I can pretty much live forever on MWer against basically everyone except WWers. They’ll be the bane of your existence because their mobility matches yours…the good ones will put their port on top of yours, so you can never really get away.

I find the assassin rogues to be quite a pain if they know how to play. If they get your trinket and put you into a full kidney vendetta with no CD’s or assistance then you are generally a goner.
If you are communicating with your partner thats handy as you can co-ordinate peels. However keeping track of the rogues Kidney cooldown via Omni bar is fairly helpful. Means when they are randomly running to you they are generally coming for a kidney. Means you have time to react with either a cc or defensive.

Can we keep this thread going to assist any other MW’s that are looking for advice.

What I normally do when I enter the arena of course is put on my triple font of life traits. When I see the enemy double melee team (dk/warrior) coming for me at full speed on their scary mounts with foam at the mouth I drop down my Invoke Chi-Ji, the Red Crane to confuse them. Then swiftly drop my port down right in the middle of the arena and cast the biggest essence font ever with x3 font of life and 18 stack Upwelling talent. Casting the biggest heals the enemy has ever seen making them scared and run to the pillar for protection against my powerful essence font. The warrior then heroic leaps on top of me and tries to pummel me but I swiftly cancel my essence font into disarm to deter him off me. I use my chi torpedo to get across the map in one global. As he charges me I port back to the middle of the arena where I begin the essence font chain all over again. That is how you beat double melee as Mistweaver monk.

what about the corruption resist essences? spirit of preservation/unwavering ward/formless void/whatever the other ones are?

They’re all bad.

Not sure if you’re being legit. Sounds plausible.

but don’t I need to use one of them for the 10 resist?

(forgot to post on my monk oops)

I mean it really depends how much corruption you’re using, I’m at 0 corruption in my arena gear. If you need the 10 corruption resistance then use Spirit.

sadly I don’t have my cloak fully upgraded on this character yet, so I do need the extra corruption resist sometimes

I mostly play 2s, so I assume I’d run crucible major, cns/spirit/conduit minors? or cns/spirit/lifebinder?

For 2s I mostly use Crucible major always. For minors I use Conflict, Memory of lucid dreams, and Rising Tide.
