Hell, before that we had like… whatsapp but yea, back in vanilla we had each others numbers lol
What you just described is theft. Is it endorsed by Blizzard? Sure, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t theft.
You may be right. I was in a guild many years ago where the GM pretty much disappeared and nobody could contact them. I remember the next officer-in-line decided to dethrone the GM but had to wait out the “time inactive” which was either 60 or 90 days, before they could take over the guild. I don’t know if there was a button to press or if they had to make a formal request to Blizz though.
Yeah, back in Vanilla we did have each others phone numbers at the officer level. We also had guild in-person get-togethers once or twice a year.
I still have a few phone numbers, but most people I need to talk to personally I message on Discord. That is how most active guilds I know handle things.
Oh, and on the subject of shipping PCs and parts when someone else upgrades, yeah. I have a frankenputer upstairs my friends sent me most of, including the vid card (several years ago and it was older then). Really helped a lot!
To be theft you have to own something. The GM doesn’t own the guild, blizzard does.
Because they put that person in a position of trust that allowed that person to then assume control of the guild. Obviously, that person couldn’t be trusted to allow the OP to maintain their ownership of the guild.
The best thing in this case is either A) don’t leave much in the bank so if someone does assume control that you aren’t losing much or B) Don’t put anyone in a position where they could assume leadership unless you fully trust them to not do anything shady like this.
In the case of B) I can say I have VERY few people I would put in this position.
I think this is a horrid policy but there’s nothing you can do about it, OP. The best thing for any GL to do if they’re going to be gone for any length of time is to kick everyone out of the guild just to be sure. You never know if Blizzard is going to change how dethrone works a fourth time while you’re gone.
Just start a new guild and remember my advice if you need to leave the game again.
You don’t own your Bnet account, character, guild, items, or anything else. So no, it is not Theft.
There has ALWAYS been a dethrone system in game for inactive GMs. If someone does not want that to happen, they have the information and tools to prevent it. It is up to them to set that up. The default is that a guild is intended to be an active social organization and if a Guild Master abandons it, Blizzard wants it to have an option to stay active for the other members.
Again, we don’t own anything. There is nothing to “steal”.
It really is a story of OP not giving all info here, because I feel like there was more he could have done during those 11 months unless he was literally in jail or the hospital. Short of that I feel no sympathy for him because it doesn’t take much to reach out and say “hey my PC died.” and someone saying “here let me get you in contact with someone to get you a decent used one, need some wow time?” most decent top guilds get there due to just being decent people.
Semantics. By that definition nothing is wrong with ninjaing loot
It’s a required policy.
Definitely had times in the past where we’ve had an active raiding guild where the GM went AWOL and it’s hard to get anything done without someone with access to that position.
Make your own guild. It’s pretty simple and I think it cost like 10g.
That’s somewhat different.
If the rules are set out before a run blizzard will delete the loot that someone “ninja’d”, not because they stole anything from the leader, but due to other tos rules.
That’s even worse if everyone has been contributing to the guild all this time and the GM boots them and keeps it just so they can go inactive.
In these guilds there was thousands and thousands of gold invested in materials and mats in the guild bank from all the members of a guild, you just don’t abandon that.
Agreed, but there are two sides of this coin. OP is describing the other side, and they got burned because they weren’t careful about who they invited or what position they allowed people to have.
gold that belongs to Blizzard, not the player
Thems the breaks, kind of like of thems the breaks for the OP.
Just like there’s nothing stopping a dethroning, there’s nothing stopping a GM from doing this. What’s good for the goose and all that.
True, but in this case blizzard isn’t taking anything.
GM won’t help, next time don’t give anyone with high enough rank to take over the guild while you are gone.
