Maybe this applies to all tanks, but threat multipliers are too low, or dps and healing threat are too high. I’m a fairly geared feral, and struggle to maintain threat vs a single target sometimes because the healer is pulling. Mind I’m mauling/mangling on CD and keepng up 5 stacks of lacerate. Trash packs are a joke, swipe is doing little to no threat and its just chaos of everyone doing a little tanking. I do have the 15% threat increase talent.
This is actually how threat is supposed to feel; DPS going full tilt isn’t really possible straight out of the gate in BC
Tanking is only partially the tanks job. At this point even a moderately geared dps can rip threat easily, let alone a well geared DPS. it is their job to not pull aggro as much as it is yours to hold threat, it can be a battle, or a smooth experience. Sadly the dps culture is to cleave / aoe everything down and it shows. Bears in particular really struggle if you have more then 4 targets at once to tank. Do not be afraid to call out dps, boot them if you have too. They bring nothing to the group but damage, 100 people sitting in town to replace them in 15 seconds. They make the run smooth, or they can do “leet dps” in shattrah city spamming for a party for 4 hours.
As an edit, I ran a bunch of dungeons yesterday, great group. But threat was still an issue. Ended up putting salv on the dps and the run went much smoother. Would they have preffered kings or wisdom? Sure. But the RUN needed Salv. any dps who balks over you taking measures to make the run smooth does not deserve your time.
They really aren’t, we just have 4-6 mob sized pulls and Swipe only catches so many. You have to really exercise your Tab key to get to everything and Demoralizing Roar and Thorns won’t hold off a big fat Greater Heal if that’s all you’ve done to that mob.
The 6-7 lobstrok packs in Slave Pens can be a huge pain if people a bit too quick on the trigger. Tab, tab, and tab some more and prioritize who you want to control if DPS insist on AoEing right off the bat.
Bears don’t just maintain threat with swipe. It’s about tab-targeting maul and taunt as necessary. But it’s gear dependent, because your threat is somehwat based on damage. If you have boost gear and the dps have naxx gear, you’re probably not going to be able to hold threat if they’re cleaving. Classic/TBC threat isn’t like retail, aggroing is much easier.
Crowd control is a lost art.
Dps needs to re-learn how to focus fire, interrupt, and watch threat meters.
Healers won’t pull threat as easy if the tank isn’t taking tons of damage because the extra mobs have been sheeped /trapped/sapped/charmed/sleeped.
Finding a group that meshes well makes dungeon spam a breeze.
Good luck!
My rotation for packs is:
- Mark and FF first target.
- Mangle, auto attack, and swipe first target.
- tab to next target.
- auto attack and swipe.
- tab to next target and repeat.
Any mob that gets loose I will tab to and taunt and lay down a mangle/maul/auto. If taunt is down they get stunned.
I can lose threat to mages and sometimes warlocks. Any class that isn’t on the marked target can pull. This is fine because I can taunt the single targets back to me. Mages are the real issue when they pull 2+ mobs at the same time, but they are usually aware they need to nova.
I’ve not had an issue holding single target with standard rotation stuff.
BuT BeaRs Are Teh baesT tAnkS! drinks more eveclear from the bottle
I’m actually going to throw something out there - I’ve been noticing the threat issue as well - HOWEVER - when I check talents of the DPS - literally none of them have taken their threat reducing talents.
When a guildie finally respec’d their Spriest to include the 24% threat reduction he was able to go ham and not rip threat. It was an immediate change. So, it may not be your fault honestly.
I like bear tanks the best.
They are. Unless we are pretending that aoe threat while leveling is what anyone cares about.
Get earthwarden, and thing should start to go fine. Unless dps are being idiots about burning everything the second you faerie fire the target.
Dps is just not patient enough to wait for you to get aggro.
After they pull aggro a few time if you want kindly suggest they back of for a few seconds.
This to, 100%
I didn’t take it but I know I have to wait before I dps.
They are.
This is very true as well. Everyone was obsessed with getting their 41pt talents and had to make cuts here and there, so I’ve seen this as well. The only class I consistently have to keep Bash and Growl ready for are very well geared (ie Naxx geared) Fury Warriors. They go in with me, WW, and then I’m peeling mobs off one at a time. I’ve definitely enjoyed running 5mans with ranged more than melee.
Yeah even folks having Blessed Qiraji Warhammer don’t exactly have just oodles of AP and the Outland weapons really jump us up towards the end.
If you don’t have lacerate yet then yeah you can’t hold aoe threat. Bear is godly once you get it.
…what?
Swipe is better than Lacerate for AoE.
I’m worried about this honestly. I’ll have earthwarden, but the bear gear is all stam and armor, no agil/AP. At 70 i’ll be hitting like a wet tanky noodle and threat is going to be an even bigger issue.
Bears will scale better later. Their threat is pretty much based around DPS. The better their gear, the better their threat. Give it time.
I was primarily a bear tank in TBC and you really couldn’t AOE much in dungeons (unless you had a paladin tank). It was all about CC and everyone DPSing the marked targets. DPS players just need to unlearn these bad retail habits.
Threat is in such a weird place right now it feels. At least as far as actual threat numbers go it feels way weaker than it used to. Even non world buffed, non crowd pummeler bear tanks in Naxx were pumping significantly higher tps than they are now in the dungeons I’ve run (with the same bear tanks so not a player thing).
A bear that was comfortably able to keep aggro off me on my mostly full bis fury warrior is now struggling to keep aggro off my frostbolting mage that is lacking single target talents. Admittedly he has commonly been 1-2 levels lower than me/the dungeon, but it still just seems strange.
