Banned for Traveling and Playing WoW

Here’s my situation: My significant other lives 55 miles away from me and we switch off traveling to each other’s place of living every other weekend. We both have our own PC’s but we share a laptop when we travel. When I visit her, I use the laptop and when she visits me, she uses the laptop. There are sometimes when I am logged into my PC at my home and then she opens up my laptop right next to me, goes into battle.net app, and it automatically logs my account in, kicking me off my PC. This happens almost every time we visit each other.

This has resulted in both of us getting banned at the same exact time. Mine was for unauthorized account access and hers ended up being honor trading.

For her, she’s level 54 with about 1k of honor. So this makes no sense.

For me, I just want to know how I can avoid this from happening again. At this point, I only want to play on my PC to avoid this potential ping again so I don’t get permanently banned. Unfortunately, that means I will no longer be able to play on weekends, which sucks.

I’m willing to do anything and provide whatever is needed to prove that I’m not sharing my account. I’ve already appealed the ban and had no luck at all. I’m fighting hard for this because I know I didn’t break any of the ToS.

Unfortunately, the forums are not a means to appeal, the official channel is via the support system

https://us.battle.net/support/en/help/product/wow/181/1450

Usually this does not produce a full ban, but rather a security alert for change your password.

Your partner has their own account would be my only concern. Each of you need to have your own account.

I can’t seem to get anywhere when I do the appeal and we both have our own separate accounts and Pay 2 separate subscriptions. They are saying the next time this ping occurs I will be permanently banned. I just don’t want all my time put into this game go to waste is all.

I’m not accusing you of anything. But accounts aren’t suspended when traveling changes your IP (A lockout occurs which is easily resolvable). And multiple people logging on the same machine in a household isn’t uncommon.

It sounds as if they have reason to believe other activities are occurring that violate the TOS. Again, not accusing you, but many people have come to this forum with an issue similar to yours and end up somewhat embarrassed by the Support Forum Agents eluding to the truth of the matter.

Just gotta appeal, if it’s denied a few times it just means their evidence is solid and someone is being untruthful. Because every time you appeal it goes to another game master that looks over the evidence, so it’s not the same guy.

Obviously account sharing is against the rules, from what you shared it doesn’t sound like you’re doing that. But I think to be safer just sign out of your account when you’re done using your PC/laptop and changing the password. Someone else you know in your house or a friend could have that info and is unknowingly playing on your account when you’re away.

That’s just me speculating and take it as a grain of salt. I would definitely keep your account details secret tho and not share it with ANYONE for any REASON.

whichasha hit the nail on the head tho!

Thank you guys for the replies, I appreciate it.

I would love for them to post their findings here. I honestly don’t want to get perma-banned if I continue playing the game I have been. I just want clarity

Just to be 100% sure, when you say you each have your own account, you mean you each have your own Battle Net account, right? Not that you each have a game license that you pay for under the same Battle net account?

I would agree, but mistakes do happen on occasion. Some fairly innocent activity can sometimes look like something nefarious.

Zukore, I took a quick glance at the accounts and I’m not seeing anything that stands out. I don’t know if that means your story holds up or I’m just not seeing what our investigation teams found. I can’t make any promises and I likely won’t be able to provide many details, but I’ve made an inquiry just to double-check.

This is not something I would normally do, as this forum should never be an avenue for appeal, but I do look at the related accounts when someone brings them here and I like to have a clearer understanding of what we found than I can see. I’ll try to provide an update when I hear back.

Yes, we both have our own battle.net account. Two completely separate subscriptions

Vrak is on the case, you are in good hands. You may not get the answer you want, but you are in good hands.

Few questions. Do either of you use a VPN? If she accidentally logged you out and one of the accounts is on a VPN, they could see it logging in 200 miles away or something, and that could possibly maybe throw up a red flag.

You both have your own Battle.net accounts right? As stated previously just want to make sure it is not two accounts under one battle.net tag

All of this said, asssuming the answer is you both have your own bnet accounts, and not two accounts under one bnet, my advice would be completely log out of the bnet launcher when you are done with your play session. This way, it eliminates accidental log ins.

If the answer is 2 under one bnet, that is unfortunately account sharing. It happens like this more than you would think. While ignorance is no defense in these cases, billing has been known to work with people to help rectify an honest mistake.

Best of luck OP, I hope this gets settled in a satisfactory way for you.

I’m happy to know I’m in good hands. Thank you everyone!

To answer your questions Mastadon:

  1. I think this might be where the issue is getting pinged. I do use a VPN for work and WoW is sometimes up when I am working so maybe this is the culprit.

  2. We do have two separate battle.net accounts. We created them before we even met each other.

I appreciate the advice a lot. As much as I enjoy the convenience of logging in automatically, I will log out completely to avoid any issues in the future.

Thank you so much!

Kind of curious to see how this ends now.

Best of luck in a resolution you want my friend.

Not in this case, but VPN’s can cause a bunch of wonkiness.

Alright.

From what I was able to find out, it does look like based on the initial evidence, it did look like you two were sharing access, which is why both accounts were penalized. Taking a much closer look and comparing the access times/dates and IPs, we were able to confirm with reasonable certainty, that you two were playing how you described, sharing access to the laptop, not the accounts.

Steps have been taken and we should be able to avoid that mistake going forward.

Both accounts have been credited with some game time. While it doesn’t necessarily make up for the inconvenience and frustration this may have caused I hope you both can accept it along with my most sincere apology.
