Almost like part of it is fictional and the other part is you saying it to other people
You are, but mostly cause RP realms have different rules, but it has to be understood (with clear IC/OOC indicators) that this is IC and NOT you just spouting any preconceived IRL notions.
And also as shown by the folks who apparently REALLY hate Scarlet Crusade or Manari RPers, you’re going to want to be ready for a flood of people who don’t like it on a personal level.
I guess I can just seperate in my head that a fictional world would allow for differing morality then in the real world?
Yep that’s often how fiction works
That’s a good start. Now separate how us players are required to follow Blizzard’s rules while Blizzard is required to follow a different set of rules for in-game content.
None of those are in any way relevant. The rules on language are extremely clear and are widespread in other games.
There are two different sets of rules. One for Blizzard and one for Players. No, it is not fair or equal.
Blizzard creates content that is used in context and reviewed by a review board. It has to fit within those limits.
Player Interactions are not rated. They (names and chat) are created in real time so can’t be reviewed and rated. They have to go by the game company policies. For Blizzard, ALL their games, regardless of rating, fall under the same family friendly code of conduct for the game chats, forums, and Bnet.
So no, don’t think talking like the NPCs is going to be ok.
You already know the answer to that. Lest you have forgotten. The filter is there because some people can’t follow the rules they agreed to. Parents and others have the option to turn it on to deal with rule breakers, in addition to reporting them.
Why?
I get the rules just as you get why im pointing out how oddly childish they are.
The rules are to act like an adult, with appropriate language and not being disruptive. That’s the opposite of childish.
I disagree. Trying to enforce behavior in a make believe fantasy world seems the peek of childish behavior.
Then don’t agree to behave and act decently in games. The rules are pretty much the baseline in every multiplayer game. No swearing, no toxicity and harassment. Don’t be disruptive.
I don’t get the drive to make it personal or chide me about the hall monitor.
Would you like the old names for “cancel culture”?
From early human history people have had societal values. Violating those can result in expulsion from that community. Shunning, being show the way out of town, etc. They would literally drive people from the town and never allow them back. Heck, they could be shipped to whole different continents eventually.
The other version of it is being “blackballed”, which comes from Masonic (or other secret club) culture, but essentially means you don’t work within an industry again. That you have violated some sort of code within that industry that they all voted to agree they won’t work with you again. It means someone can’t get a job again within the reach of those folks.
If you think the idea of being rejected by society, or an industry for someone’s behavior is new, I have books to send you!
Consequences can suck and be life changing. People need to think carefully before they make choices. Getting ejected from a game is very very minor as a lesson to learn.
Last time was religous censorship. Its why the burning legion was changed to the nether rather then hell orginally and why pallies don’t have crosses.
What is and isnt acceptable comes and goes.
Man people still getting upset over being told they need to follow rules
All private spaces have a set of rules. For a very few spaces their rules are “anything goes”, like the chans. There is nothing childish about setting rules you want on your private property. Those rules usually guide the conduct they prefer to foster and often keep the company safe from legal repercussions.
What is childish is looking at those rules, agreeing to the rules, then being upset when they are actually enforced. Just go to a space that has the rules you want.
Actually even they have rules
Albeit it much less of them, but still have rules
I can’t think of a single game or social media spot that doesn’t have rules
Right… just as swear filter should remove offensive chat.
Obviously there is more in play then swearing but trying to highroad won’t really do anything here. Other then lead us in a endless circle of the rules are just enforced based on what is currently acceptable.
You know full well the profanity filter is not there to help people get around the rules. It is there because some people can’t behave.
Just like bullet proof vests don’t make it ok to shoot people. Much more extreme example, but the concept is the same. The tools to prevent damage don’t excuse the violations to start with.
Talk however you want, just don’t expect to do it on other people’s property or around strangers. Stick to the places that have rules you like - just like people have done for centuries, eons even. I am very sure you could get tossed out the door, or “cancelled” in Ancient Rome, Greece, Brittan, or any tribe culture. That covers a huge spectrum of society types. They all have values and standards. They all have consequences for not following those.
Again, YOUR property is yours to do with as you see fit in the US. I love private property rights! Your house, your rules. Say what you want there. Invite friends who share your thoughts. Have fun.
It’s cancel culture.
I used to have a FB acquaintance who was a staunch hard-right guy who would go out of his way on social media to “rev up” any liberals he could, and then he’d incite a few of them so much, then report them for crossing the FB TOS lines. True story…and I know because he’d then brag about it on his FB page, with screenshots of the convo AND of FB’s response.
He is a guy on the far right. Same thing happens with folks on the left. It’s a stupid game both sides play. People are ignorant, and mean, and cruel…I don’t agree with bans if that’s going on.
