Bamboozled

Have been playing WoW for about 6 month and quite enjoying it but there are a few aspects that, to me, make no sense. I have 4 characters running between level 60 - 90.

Due to old age and health I only play solo quests. The loot that I pick up questing confuses me. Lets take a Hunter.

Example, gone to Northrend and on the first quest picked up a ranged weapon with, lets say 20 dps, good armour around 38 rating suitable for that character.

I have finished around 50% of the quests in Northrent and never again have i picket up anything with a higher DPS in ranged weapon or armour rating . I get plenty of two handed swords, pikes, axes etc. nothing suitable for a Hunter in WoW. The same applies to armour, what good is plate or cloth to a Hunter in WoW.

Why have Items offered to you for a Quest which are totally Useless to a, example, Hunter. One would think that the Offering or Loot in Questing would be Usefull for the Class Questing otherwise why bother picking up the Loot and getting killed or harmed while you at it.

Now the Question, Have I missed something setting up my characters, Or, Is it just something to Enoy and Frustrate the player in the design of the Game. And I can assure You, it is Frustrating to the extend that at times one feels like just switching off after picking up the x number of Plate armour or 2 handed Sword.

Um, you might want to post this on the quests forums or general discussion. The devs really don’t frequent this board for player questions and feedback.

Just so you know back when WoW started, quests didn’t take into account what class you was. Quest rewards was poorly optimized. Gear wasn’t really optimized either.

The only time armor, weapons, or trinkets are guaranteed for your class (not necessarily your spec, but sometimes) are upon quest turn in, in your situation. Loot gained from killing things has always been random.

MMOs and RPGs have operated like this for years.

Primarily, quests in many of the older areas offer a choice of rewards based on the quest, not on the class doing it. So you may pick up a quest that offers you a choice of a shield, a one handed axe or a pike. That is how those quests work.

Later expansions tended to focus on basing the reward on the Class and/or the Spec you were. Sometimes giving you a choice for your class, sometimes simply offering you a reward based on your spec.

I can’t speak for the future, but it is entirely possible with the leveling changes something with Shadowlands, that we’ll see an update to quest rewards to fall in line closer to what we have now.

As the others mentioned, if you wish to provide feedback on the current workings of the game you’ll likely want to post in the General Discussion forum, or perhaps in the Quest forum. Alternately, you can submit your suggestion via that option in the help menu in-game.

You can also scan the wowhead.com data base for specific weapon types using a variety of filters.
e.g. Here is a scan for all bows, xbows, and guns requiring from level 60 to 90 to equip and the source of each weapon.
https://www.wowhead.com/weapons/min-req-level:60/max-req-level:90/class:3/type:2:18:3#items:0+3+18

Note that quests and items from both Outland and Northrend will scale to your current level so you can use the db scan results to id quests offering ranged rewards in either of those expansions and bounce back and forth to acquire upgrades. The Nessingwary quest lines in both Outland and Northrend become available around level 65 and each provides a good weapon upgrade that will carry you through the rest of the expansion content.

A good number of the better items drop from dungeons and raids, you can use the Looking for Group tool to get ported to a dungeon group that is created on the fly to run dungeons within your level range.

I’m just scrolling the forum, but I had to comment on this

Useless to a hunter? what??? ALL gear is hunter gear!!! (maybe not plate though).

All jesting aside, from the early days of vanilla wow, hunters have gotten in trouble for gear, both weapons and armor, because well, we can use almost all of it in, doesn’t mean it is optimal for us, but we can use it  We can train just about every weapon (maces being the exception? off hand can’t remember) by going to a weapon trainer (3 different areas offering different weapon training). We can also wear cloth, again, not optimal, but we can wear it. And believe me, hunters were known for grabbing EVERYTHING back then (or so the story goes
)

Some of the excuses used were hilarious too, but back then, we were all new, and many of us new to gaming period, and well, who knew better
My favorite one was anyone stacking intellect (who didn’t really need a ton of intellect) so they could be a ‘smarter’ player. Sometimes players would swap out good green and blue gear for white stuff from vendors cause it “looked better”.

Just a bit of past lore for you since you are new to WoW

This is why you aren’t finding anything with higher numbers
everything scales to what level you are at. It’s boring. Nothing new and great to find.

All in all, keep doing the quests, keep grabbing the loot, keep vendoring it, it all adds up to gold in the end.

Last but not least, my opinion, scaling really stinks. It’s the main reason I never went back to do all those older areas and quests again after they implemented it.

(and super last - there are TONS of us older and not so healthy players in game. Welcome to the Senior Citizen’s version of World of Warcraft!)

you got me by ten years  I feel young now!!

my ex FIL still plays (probably as bad as he did in vanilla days) and he is probably mid 80s now.

I hope I don’t come across him anywhere, he was horrible, and I mean HORRIBLE.

I have leveled many characters in the past year. Prior to level scaling, quest rewards could have been anything. After level scaling, quest rewards were appropriate to your class. (well, mostly)

The stats have changed a few times since then, but I haven’t run into quest gear that can’t be equipped in a long time.

Ugh need to go get game time tommorow subscription runs out in 46 hrs

Someone created a horde 50+ geezer guild “Horde Tough” on the Myzrael classic server. They have a recruitment post on the wow classic guild forums and Myzrael forums, Just search Horde Tough. I believe at least one alliance 50+ guild was also created

This may or may not have any effect on the weapons you are receiving, but, have you checked the appropriate loot slot for the class you are playing?

?
are you talking about loot spec?

I don’t think loot spec applies in Classic. And I don’t think it applies for Quest rewards.

i didn’t see any mention of classic.

for regular quests it does
for world quests it doesn’t.

No, you didn’t. In fact, OP said they were questing in Northrend, which would tend to indicate contemporary WoW.

That’s not Classic. OP did start another post on general discussion also, I believe they got it taken care of.

Good point.

Also good point. I didn’t realize there was a distinction there. I thought all quest rewards were unaffected by chosen loot spec. Thanks.

Such a feature is also the reason why I still complete certain older quests for transmog items. Doing older quests that do not offer any rewards for this class accomplishes nothing for me.

Early quest rewards while leveling are unaffected, but once you get into WoD (maybe earlier), you only see options based on your loot spec.
