I gave you one. You not accepting it because it’s not what you consider “official” doesn’t make it an invalid place to get info.
Over which there’s a lot of speculation… But mostly it comes down to someone at blizzard really hates the striders.
But they can. You can, with consumables, have water walking, no daze and a glider ready at the same time. Just equip speed and you have it all.
But we aren’t allowed to choose mount abilities by choosing a different mount. Because… I dunno. It’s just spiteful and stupid.
You would hope it’s for technical/performance reasons… like maybe it was causing conflicts and this was the best/cheapest solution.
It all goes back to money in some way, I’m sure.
This was exactly my point. Nothing would change, the water strider would still dominate the mount scene pre flying like it does now. Blizzard is changing that by making it so any mount can do whatever you want it to do.
Which of you will be here to eat crow when 9.0 comes around and the bardings, hoofplates, stirrups, and current gear requiring BFA mats will be capped to bfa zones?
It’s only fair that if you want to come around to gaslight and mindlessly defend a system that many of you don’t even understand yet.
Bardings, hoofplates, and stirrups are already for use in certain areas. I don’t see them doing that to mount equipment, because if they were going to do that they would have made the water strider only water walk in MoP zones long ago.
Despite popular belief, the developers aren’t static robots. They were different people in MoP. And btw, they DID try to phase out the strider not long ago but faced backlash and postponed the gutting of it.
When the equipment requires BFA mats, you think they’re going to make the equipment for the new expansion require the past expansion’s mats? Cmon, McFly. They will be for BFA zones with the new equipment recipes being drops or gated behind rep. Or even a level of pathfinder.
You troglodyte. It is not a positive to lose an ability for every character you had yesterday to now only have it on one.
Here is when they tried to just outright gut the strider without their sneaky “compromise.” https://blizzardwatch.com/2016/02/26/water-striders-will-not-be-restricted-by-location-nerfs-removed/
And note that their BS excuse now was the same excuse then. Do you know why it was a problem? Because players were bypassing the water obstacles of Suramar.
And how many years of use did you get from it?
Do you cry and complain about everything you buy many years ago and get a lot of use out of and then one day it becomes useless?
My kitty missed the splashing water sounds!! She is inconsolable!
2016 quote from Ion: “As noted in my earlier post in the thread, the genesis of this change was an observation that the Water Strider was being used disproportionately frequently, which led to a genuine concern on our part that the mechanical advantage of water-walking was stomping on the cosmetic choice of a player’s favorite mount. This is different from other utility mounts like the Traveler’s Mammoth or Expedition Yak, which are rarely used for any prolonged period of time or as a default mount; those are summoned specifically for the use of their vendors and then dismissed.”
What freakin difference does it make if a lot of people choose the strider as a default mount? The excuse is transparent and silly.
“We felt people liked a mount too much so we have to gut it. It’s really not so we can slow you down in Suramar or anything. Really!”
It is ironically the same copy and pasted excuse they used to gut it with this equipment. They tried before and lost, and this is their compromise… for this expansion.
Also note the language. “Advantage”
Except that it isn’t “next thing”… We already know they don’t want flying mounts to fly. That’s where Pathfinder came from.
No, it’s the opposite of your point. MANY of us want Striders EXEMPT from mount equipment. Just like Golems.
Which means they will be SLOWER on land and more dazable. So people would use them “on land” >LESS OFTEN<.
As if over use of striders is a “real problem” that actually deserves any attention at all. (it’s so very much not). that’s really a problem that needs solving at all. If it were, it would be better to just fix the many mounts that SHOULD be able to water walk or swim at ground-running-speed so that there’d be more diversity.
But heavens no… can’t have variety. EVERYTHING MUST BE THE SAME BECAUSE REASONS.
BOOOORRRRINGGG.
They tried. We rebelled, they relented. Now we have this crowbar kludge/hack that they’re using to try ripping it from our cold dead fingers a different way.
Totally irrelevant. I bought it, it’s virtually mine. Leave it the heck alone.
Not when it’s replaced with something better, which is how Blizzard deals with almost everything except class abilities which we tolerate in the hopes of it improving our potential performance, despite rarely seeming to.
Rarely. RARELY, blizzard goes back and removes abilities, but until now it seemed only when it was trinkets/set-bonuses that were no longer compatible with new combat ability changes.
Water walking isn’t a combat ability. If it’s a problem they should address it by building zones that don’t benefit from it instead. Simple as that.
So my waterstrider has lost the ability to stride on water unless I equip it with a new pair of boots that waterstriders don’t even wear?
OK—I’ll go along with that…but who is putting in all the time equipping boots on all those waterstriders still striding on water in Pandaria?
Also, can I trade in my broken strider in for one of those wild ones that still work?
Didn’t think this one through very well did ya Blizz.
You will be happy the next time you logon,
I have my doubts.

If they hadn’t there would have been no point to making water walking mount equipment. Mount equipment is intended to give people a choice of what mount to use, including for water walking. If the strider had kept the ability, no one would use the water walking mount equipment, and would still only use the strider a lot of the time.
(end quote)
This makes no sense.
Blizzard could have made this a win/win situation if they wanted to, but chose the option of most division in the community.
Just read the posts in this thread, not to mention all of the others, for evidence that this is what they created.
I have no doubt that this was not done, in the way it was done, just so players would not have to look at striders any more. If that was the case, it would disturb me even more to think “what is next”.
They also did not do it just so other players could walk on water, since there were other option to make this happen, yet, again, they chose the path of most division.
…and this is what we have.
Unfortunately I am going to have to use the equipment, but…guess what?
My nerfed water strider will still be my main “go to” mount for water walking AND NOW for everywhere else as well.
Thanks Blizzard!
So sorry for all of those people who had such a terrible time having to see other players riding their water striders.
I’m not dun yet
