Authenticator via email

So i’m gonig to ask this as politely as i can. I will have some annoyances but i’ll try to keep them brief

  1. Is it possible to set up my email for the authenticator and not my phone. Even if it’s an alternative email (since access to the account would also indicate potential access to my primary email. which ofc would bypass the value of the authenticator).

I ask because i’ve seen far too many issues with the authenticator from checking on posts down bellow, in any instance where someone may misplace their phone for a short duration. And the only options to recover it seem to be

  1. Send in a ticket. Which has issues with pixel size, for not accepting them. Not to mention actually sending a ticket is borderline impossible. Since your entire system for “help” is predicated around an infinite loop of “if this doen’st solve your problem, check this . . need extra help? here are other options”. . . No actual people to talk to directly, interact with directly just an infinitely looping algorithm.

  2. If the ticket doesn’t’ work. Make a new email (or a dummy email), to make a new account with the same exact name. Just to send in a ticket which already failed for different reasons. So that doesn’t really fix much

  3. Spend several hundred dollars to buy a new phone, and whatever extra is needed to keep the number you had on the previous phone.

All of these seem like they can be fully circumvented by just attaching it to my email instead of my phone (not the same email, for the above mentioned purpose)>

I’d be ok without an authenticator entirely, but it’s a required thing to even play the game. Since the LFG tool can’t be used without it, and anyone who plays more than casually requires that access. So you’re subsequently required to put your entire game access on whether or not you lose your phone. . Which btw, is far more likely to occur than someone hacking 2 of my emails.

Unfortunately, no. A phone number is currently required for setting up the authenticator. You can however, choose to remove the SMS Text messaging option afterwards, though there’s no real reason to do so.

As to your other 3 issues, those are not accurate. It’s very easy for us to help by providing a link to anyone needing it if you can’t find the right option.

The only time that ticket options loop like that is when the ticket you’re trying to put in isn’t likely one that a GM can help with.

I’m not sure what you mean by “doesn’t work”? For an authenticator ticket, they don’t give you the generic response. They ask you to send in proper documentation to have the authenticator removed.

That has nothing at all to do with Blizzard. If you lose your phone, that’s not Blizzard’s fault. It costs you nothing to have Blizz remove the authenticator from your account (or to re-add it for that matter).

You can still use LFG, you just don’t get to customize the messages.

No, but your email is at risk if your wow account is, your phone less likely to be compromised. Not impossible, but less likely.

I am not sure where you live, but it shouldn’t cost extra to move your number to a new phone service in the US. However if your are only replacing a lost or non-functioning phone, the you can likely just change it easily on the services site. I’ve migrated in the past my auth from Iphone 5 on Tracphone, to a cheap Motorola on Xfinity, to my current 5G ACE with the same number I’ve used for 25 years . Make sure to save the serial numer and restore code.
