Authenticator question

Saw an article via wow twitter that the authenticator app is going away in January and migrating to the bnet app.

I’ve never used the authenticator app as my physical authenticator is still working fine.

Will it lose support in january and do I need to go ahead and set up the Bnet authenticator stuff?

The key has a 7year shelf lifeits gona be dying sooner or later and the key fob are no longer being made so you will need the bnet app sooner or later.

Physical fobs already somewhat lost support when they stopped being manufactured back in 2019.

It will continue to work as long as the battery lasts, but you will need to swap to the app eventually.

It is MUCH easier to migrate over to the Bnet app while your key fob still works. It will die, honestly probably sometime soon, so I would look into doing that now if possible. If the key fob dies before you remove it, you have to make a ticket and prove your identity and it’s a huge hassle no one wants to deal with.

You will need to remove your old one first before you can use the new.

Yea i was always told that but I’ve been stupid lucky with mine. I’ve had the same starcraft 2 one since they were first released lol. Guess I’ll look into the app

Yep, by design these things CANNOT have the battery changed, so once the battery dies it’s a paperweight. I still have one of the original ones from the first batch when they first released it. It actually still worked the last time I tested it but I haven’t tested it in years. I highly doubt it still works but I’m still keeping the device for nostalgic value. I migrated to the authenticator app when it first became available, and then to the battle.net app when I returned to the game a few months ago (it prompted me so I just migrated it at that time, no reason to wait since I already had the battle.net app installed anyway).

The battle.net app is much more convenient IMO. While you CAN still generate a code, you don’t have to, and can just click the popup when it comes up.

If by support, you mean will you still be able to use your physical Authenticator on your account? Yes, if you have a physical Authenticator on your account you will be unaffected by the Migration.

I actually note that in the sticky at the top of the page:

I have a physical Authenticator keychain. Do I need to take any action?

No. The physical authenticator is not affected by this change. However, the physical authenticator is no longer available and when the battery dies you will need to use the Battle.net Mobile App to continue using the Authenticator feature.

I have a bit of an issue concerning my authenticator. Ive played WoW since burning crusade. Ive had my authenticator on my old apple Iphone 4. Having that said I went to login to my authenticator to remove it…then to install the battlenet app for the new one… upon doing so… I discovered my old Iphone will not connect to wifi for whatever reason. I tried it 20 times to no avail. This is creating an issue bigtime. I play this game with my 74 yr old Dad. Not trying to lose what bonds us all these years! PLEASE HELP!

Best and sincere advice. Get a new phone?

Or a tablet. Those work as well and compatible ones often end up being cheaper than phones.
