I got an email saying that my account is set up to use the old authenticator app and that I need to migrate to the new app or I’ll loose access to certain features on my wow account. I already use the battle.net app (NOT the battle.net authenticator app or a physical authenticator) to log into my account. The authenticator in the battle.net app is working, because I just used it to log into this website. I don’t even have the battle.net authenticator app installed on my phone, so I am 100% certain I used the right one. I’ve been using the battle.net app as my authenticator for more than a year, and I’ve never even installed the battle.net authenticator app on this phone. I tried to put in a CS ticket but (like a lot of other people, apparently) I just can’t submit one. What’s going on?
If you are able to successfully login using the Battle.net Mobile App, you should be good. Thanks for checking.
Edit: It’s seemed strange you got an email - but on checking a little further - you actually have two different Battlenets. The other looks very old and unused. So, yes - you should be fine on this one. I’m sorry for any confusion this may have caused.
If you’ve already migrated over, then just ignore the email No ned for a ticket I don’t think.
So, if we had the old Authenticator on 3 Battle Net accounts (set up before they started requiring phone numbers for setup), then are we now losing that ability?
Mostly asking due to this part of the email:
If you don’t migrate, your authenticator will be removed from your account and you’ll no longer be protected or able to use the authenticator app to approve login requests. We’ll reset your password and send details on setting up a new password to your email address.
Thanks!
Side note: I had the old Authenticator set up on this main Bnet account and the following other Bnet accounts: . The one for is not on an Authenticator.
Are you talking about the keyfob Authenticator, or the soon-to-be-defunct Mobile Authenticator?
Keyfob: not affected by this change in the least.
Mobile: yes, you need to change to the B.net Authenticator.
As for the 3 B.net accounts:
"Can I use the same Authenticator Serial Number to secure more than one Battle.net Account?
The Battle.net Authenticator requires a phone number be attached to an account, and a phone number can only be attached to a single Battle.net Account.
Can I set up the same Authenticator Serial Number in more than one smartphone?
Your unique Authenticator is tied to your mobile device and we do not support setting up the same Serial Number on more than one device.
I don’t have a mobile phone number
A mobile phone number is required to set up and use the Battle.net Authenticator. If you are unable to access your previous Authenticator contact support."
The stand-alone Authenticator app that is being retired.
I know how it is setup currently.
I was asking Orlyia questions regarding the specific Bnet accounts I listed in my post (albeit behind hidden text).
But nevermind. They will have their Authenticator protections removed and their passwords reset. Thankfully my 3 additional Bnet accounts are just alt ones.
Yeah, I understand it sucks. I really wish they had considered multiple B.net accounts when they started implementing this. I feel it’s going to be something they change in the near future after it launches.
Here’s hoping. I don’t imagine there’s a lot of people with multiple Bnet accounts, but for those of us who do have more than one it’s a bummer to have any additional accounts be unprotected.
Okay, thanks for looking into it! I actually forgot I have that account because it’s been so long since I’ve used it. Based on the other comments in this thread, it seems like people having multiple accounts (a fairly common occurrence) might have been overlooked during this implementation. Hopefully it gets addressed soon; in my case, it would have been helpful to have the account name actually listed in my email.
I suspect you would need multiple Android or iOS/iPadOS devices, one per battle.net account, plus multiple SMS-capable phone numbers (also one per battle.net account).
A phone number is required to set up the Authenticator, not for use. So you may need to add your number to a Battle.net account in order to set up the app, but once added, the number is no longer required for it to work.
I also received that email and have been losing my mind trying to fix this. I have the serial number and restore code for the authenticator. Tried to update to the new SMS authenticator and it just said error. Removed everything and tried to install the new authenticator and it installed the battle.net app for chrome and I had no idea how to log in. So currently, I have removed everything and an now in a security risk having no authenticator. I don’t know what to do.
I don’t care about the Battle.net social still, I ONLY want to be able to securely log into the game.
EDIT I was not upgrading from the physical authenticator. Was trying to change the SMS log in authenticator.
Just tried again from scratch. Now it says I have to enable the privacy chat section which I intentionally turned off so I don;t have to talk to anyone, now it’s telling me I have to open up to socializing just so I can log on?
That’s crazy!
edit; I says to enable the ones listed as required, but none say required!!!
I give up. I’ll just be vulnerable. I’ve been at this for over an hour.
If you don’t currently have the Authenticator set up on your Battle.net account you should just need to set it up within the Battle.net Mobile Application. If you tap your profile pic then select Authenticator, you should be able to continue into that to set it up.
What exactly are you doing and where are you seeing that?
Not sure what you mean by “within” the battle.net mobile application.
Removed everything => logged into google => went to Blizzard.com and downloaded Battle.net Authenticator and it gave an error saying I need the new one. Removed everything and downloaded the battle.net for the phone and it gave an error message saying I need to change the privacy setting.
It’s like whiplash day in that I just got trust level 3 YAY!!..then this…DARN!!
Ok, tried your suggestion and it still gives me the error saying I have to change some of my privacy setting to proceed with the rest of your suggestion. It says to change the social settings that are required. None are listed as required and everything worked perfect before this.
So the issue is what social setting do I have to change to get the authenticator to work?
Are you specifically getting the Authenticator App? Through one of our Support Articles? This one?
It should look like this:
yes it looks like the one on the bottom. That’s the one I installed.
Okay. What is saying that and what exactly is it saying?
The app does need permissions on your phone, so it is asking for that? Or are you referring to your Battle.net Account settings?
Sorry for the frustration, Turgan, sometimes without visuals of what you are seeing it can be difficult to figure out what the issue may be. Hopefully, we can figure it out to get you all set up. If it is a phone permission thing, that shouldn’t change your social settings, it just updates what the app has access to, allowing it to send push notifications, etc…
