Authenticator dongle battery is dying

Could you tell me how to either remove/replace/repair a WoW authenticator with a dying battery? Thanks!

To get to the meat of the issue: You can’t mess with it whatsoever - if you try to open it up, it’d just destroy itself into being uselessness. There isn’t a way to replace the battery, they stopped making it years ago and the only way to have the authentication is the phone app.

Rats, but thanks for the info.

This should help you get going on using the app.

It is HIGHLY advised that you move to the App before your fob completely dies. It makes everything much much harder to do after the fact. please do it as soon as possible.

I’ll detach the authenticator from the account. I appreciate the link you sent Jeysca. Question, is the customer support forum assistance and advice between customers, but not any interaction with Blizzard staff?

It’s mainly a player to player help forum with blizzard oversight. AKA, if a blue they feel like they could help give better idea on how to do something that the other posters, like myself, already gave. Like if a ticket path the posters ain’t fully sure how to go about it, a blue poster (I.E. Someone who works for blizzard, they have blue text), can come in and give that details.

You’re welcome!

I’d highly recommend using the app for authentication from now on.
If you don’t want to do so, just be forewarned that you will lose the 4 extra bag slots and the battlepet (if you had sms on as well).

This is primarily a player to player help forum, Arkronos.

We do keep a close eye, but the folks that hang out here regularly are very very good at helping their fellow players. Some have been here as long (in some cases longer) than I have.

You can buy a new Blizzard Dongle from Amazon.

I bought one recently and it works.

I have to admit the game has not asked me to use it for a few years.

Are you sure? I don’t believe there is a way to register a physical token in WOW any longer. And you would have to re-register it for it to work (the serial number is part of the code).

You also can’t just buy any RSA token (yes, lots of other industries still use these physical tokens and they are still made). It has to be one set up in WOW’s systems.

I work for a bank, and while we do still offer tokens for remote work, they highly encourage people to use the RSA mobile app instead.

The main issue with this? The batteries in those are most likely nearing their end, too. Sure, they can work, but they’d be still be draining the battery while in standby mode to be used.

Found 1 in stock. For the amazing price of over 10 times (70$) what it originally sold for (6.50), but at least it was on sale for 57% off (30.35). Last mention I found acknowledging they were no longer made was 2019, so even if they were manufactured in 2018-19 brand new, they would be close to 5 years old and no likely to last long.

I know at that price I would not take a chance, the battery could last years or could die in a week. No way to know and no way to replace it.

old leftover stockpiles probably from 2019/2018 would be my guess. batterys can sit quite a while before going bad. agree still wouldnt use them. would be of dubious quality at this point.

Third-party vendor.

Recommend you remove it in the very near future, since you see evidence the battery is dying. If it dies before you remove it, you’ll have to go through a tedious ownership verification process, during which you won’ t have access to the account until Blizzard is satisfied you are who you say you are.

That’s why I removed mine this year simply because it was getting old, not because it showed signs of dying. I first acquired it at the time Blizzard gave Australia its own servers, however long that’s been. The authenticator still works fine when I test it now and then, but peace of mind comes from removing it to eliminate that risk.

Good luck to you.
