At what point is gameplay unhealthy?

After hearing so many people comment that they absolutely hate the Plunderstorm gameplay but they really want the rewards, I just scratch my head. I mean, this sounds
like addictive behavior. I understand that all games have rewards, and I suppose that
makes it ‘OK’ in that sense, but I see it another way.

All games have goals, that’s normal. But when players put up with gameplay they
absolute hate because they afraid of missing the reward, that just sounds unhealthy. In real life, you often have to do things you don’t like to get something you want, but
that applies to things like jobs. You are not crazy about the job, but it pays the bills.
OK, but I do not think that should apply to a game at all. A game is going to have
rewards, but the gameplay itself should also be enjoyable to at least some degree.

It does look like companies are moving towards models to maximize subscription
revenue. One way they do this is have limited time events with very desireable rewards. Apparently, the quality of gameplay no longer matters that much.

Gameplay being enjoyable is subjective.

Many do enjoy the gameplay.

You can’t make any gameplay that is enjoyable to everyone.

They want to complain about Plunderstorm 'cause they have nothing better to do right now.

In a few weeks it’ll be about something else, don’t worry.

Edit: People seem to keep forgetting that three other colour variations of the identical transmog were datamined as well . Oh well, they’ll “suffer” through this game mode they say they hate so much, and then realize it was all for nothing.

Plunderstorm is AWESOME. If you do not like it, don’t play it. Wait for the other colours to release.

True, but enticing people to do game play they do not really like just to get a reward is another matter. A lot of people have said they absolutely hate plunderstorm but they
really want the rewards, and they are afraid of missing out. (FOMO) I don’t necessarily
think that there should be a PVE only mode of Plunderstorm, but instead, have the rewards available through other means, like the Trading Post.

Requiring me to spam millions of keys to upgrade my gear. This is detrimental to my mental health

Extremely unhealthy design

Because the FOMO event will be gone by then.

But trading post is also a time limited event with gameplay people don’t like.

It feels like you started with a conclusion. Then worked your ways backwards.

Doing something and then getting a reward is sorta how WoW has always worked. The only way to ensure that no one experiences gameplay they don’t like to get a reward is to give everyone everything for logging in.

Otherwise you are just saying that things you personally don’t like shouldn’t have unique rewards. But things you personally like should.

What concerns me more is that seems to be a conscious decision on the part of Blizzard. They certainly knew that not many PVE minded players (and there are a lot who play WOW) would play a PVP type game unless the rewards were substantial. But why did they feel the need to pull in people who they know generally don’t like PVP? Why not just make Plunderstorm for people who like PVP, with modest rewards?

Yep, that’d be me.

I’ve given up on it at Renown 3 :dracthyr_shrug:

10.2.7 content with the pandamonium event:

“What do you mean I have to do challenges in dungeons to get the transmogs!?! I want them given to me!!”

What makes you say the rewards for plunderstorm are substantial?

I seen regulars doing the event while they swore they’ll never do the event.

They’re just doing it in the shadows.

So are you saying that there is no such thing as unhealthy game design, even if it is modeled after addiction, for example?

I just want to see rewards that match the gameplay. If you do a lot of pet battles, you get pet stones and additional pets. Do dungeons and raids, get gear to better do dungeons and raids.

The problem, to me, is what do you give for PvP? Can’t give unfair advantages on live servers. They already get armor and mounts for seasons. The fact that there are pets, mounts, armor, and tender in this game mode, is what makes me want to try to complete the renown track. I’ve only jumped in casually so far, and have only gotten to renown 3.

The issue is your alternative is also.

I personally don’t like the rewards, but plenty of people have said they absolutely must have the rewards, and that’s why they are playing Plunderstorm even though they
hate the gameplay.

Doesn’t answer my question.

What makes the rewards substantial?

Exactly what’ll happen mate.

Me too to be honest

It’s almost like optional content is… optional?

Maybe I’m old-fashioned, but if I don’t enjoy certain content I just… don’t do it :man_shrugging:

For example, I don’t have the time/schedule to commit to “serious” or Mythic raiding guilds anymore, so I simply don’t try to join Mythic raiding guilds. I also understand that I won’t get the goodies/mounts/titles associated with Mythic raiding - and that’s OK

They aren’t. The people who are crying about it are making it artificially substantial
