At what point does targeting a player become griefing?

I’ve been leveling this character to surprise a RL friend who plays Horde and gank them throughout the Dragonflight leveling experience, but I was wondering if using things like spy addon, clipping their reaction (basically, going all-out), and ganking them multiple times over the days it takes to level is considered griefing. I’m not planning on corpse-camping them, but to troll and frustrate them, then eventually reveal it’s me after a bit.

I know them, but I wanted to be clear, since the CoC is a bit vague on it, probably for the better.

(Then again, they did one time lead me to a trap in Classic and kill me, then say in general chat, WTS portal to , to which I also said in general chat, “This person’s a clown.” Maybe this is just delayed revenge.)

“Griefing” is not anything actionable. It’s a very vague term that the player base uses when they don’t like something that someone else does.

PvP combat is allowed on PvP realms. It is even allowed on Normal realms, but it’s simply that the other player must turn on Warmode, or do some other PvP action (PvP quest, run through an enemy city, etc).

Ganking can become harassment if it’s documented for days, even weeks at a time. But there is a lot more that goes into it, including not allowing a player to progress the character and/or happening across multiple characters, just to name a few off the top of my head.

So basically, have at it.

I can’t speak for any addons or other means that you use. Addons are generally allowed if they work within our LUA framework.

Basically, if they have PvP enabled, then PvP rules apply.

I can think of one instance where this situation resulted in the griefer being punished, many years ago. However, the griefer also engaged in harassment of his target outside the game, using the WoW forums and other social media – and went so far as to merit police investigation.

Hope you’re not going that far, OP.

Oh, definitely not. This is purely an in-game trolling thing, limited only to PvP, over a few days or so (however long it takes them to quest in the upcoming zones), just to the point they recognize my character name. Then I reveal it’s me.

Thanks for the example, though. I’ll definitely not go that far (even if I never planned on that, anyway).

Yeah, never cross over into harassment. You can gank them all day long though and corpse camp without breaking the rules. You can even kill NPCs if you want until it crosses into zone disruption which takes a long time to do and has to impede major game options for everyone.

It is not NICE to do of course, but is not against the rules. Be careful your friend won’t get so frustrated they quit though. That would make your expansion a lot less fun without good friends to play with.

Indeed. I’d just be using the spy addon to PvP them about 5 times throughout the questing experience, whether it’s 4 days or 4 weeks. But I’d do it just as a normal PvP’er, nothing outside the game (aside from recording their reactions, but that’d be for myself and friends, and only the public after the fact [if at all] if they’d be okay with it, not to humiliate them).
