As a transgender player

This is exactly the precedent of representation, though: normalization.

This is a bit of a large topic and I’ll not be able to explain fully, but the summary is: Since around 2014 there were constant leftist attacks on all forms of media, trying to paint gamers and media producers as racists, misogynists and homophobes using very bad justifications.

And this also created resentment on the gamers and media consumers because the things they loved were under attack. And a pressure for developers to try to pander to leftwing publications to avoid bad publicity. This resulted in a big wave of characters that were released with the single purpose of political pandering.

The characters felt extremely forced and the stories had a clear political bias giving them the feeling of political propaganda. On the comics industry this was especially noticeable since lots of these companies are had massive losses because of the lower quality of the stories.

Because of this every character released that might fit one of these checkboxes is heavily scrutinized for fear that the game they like becomes dominated by political propaganda.

Wow rude, I have lived my entire life as a man, even though my outside didn’t match. I was never fortunate enough to be born in a time or country when I could have changed it. I even helped my friend transition. I am no hater but I don’t really care for the focus in this game, or any game, as its something that I live with and bothers me every day and makes me extremely depressed. I come here to forget it a bit and play male characters so I can be me.

…This was your takeaway from gamer gate? Leftist attacks? Not the virulent misogyny?

I don’t care what you believe, if I cared what anyone thought of me living in the wrong outside all these long years I would be dead long ago. Being trans isn’t funny or something I could wish on anyone its a terrible struggle even when you are sleeping.

Yes, exactly.

People like that expect transgender community to be a hivemind, disagree with them and they start to question your identity.

It’s concerning that any human beings actually think like this.

Lmao how did i miss that post

I understand where you’re coming from, but you do not speak for the whole trans community by saying you don’t want to see it. I’m a trans man as well, and I want to see trans representation in media. I like seeing people like me, it makes me feel like we’re finally getting to a point where being transgender can be seen as acceptable by the general public. I know plenty of other trans people who have said the same.

It’s very hard to go through what we do, and I understand completely that to you, it’s upsetting to see in media because it reminds you of your dysphoria. We don’t all feel the same way though.

Oh I completely agree

You’re focusing on a microcosm in regards to representation when the greater whole of society is still decades if not hundreds of years away from real LGBT normalization.

I question the validity of your goals here.

So because something is “hundreds” of years away, we should do absolutely nothing to have it be inclusive now?

For what it’s worth, I support you in your journey, brother, and I hope with all my heart that it gets easier for you over time. I don’t know where you are in your transition - and you absolutely are not obligated to tell me, especially not in a public forum - but for me, personally, it has gotten easier in the 8 years since I came out, and my confidence in myself has grown as I’ve become more comfortable in my own skin. Stay strong.

How many microcosms are we supposed to pass up because they’re “soooo widdle and not meaningful”? These things add up, especially in the gaming community.

Honestly it’s so embarrassing how you guys say the same exact things bigots have said for so long.

“Black people shouldn’t be allowed on sports teams it will just cause a divide between the players.”

“Gays shouldn’t be allowed to marry it will just cause a divide in families.”

Literally like you’re a bunch of parrots.

I didn’t say you should pass up any opportunity. I’m certainly not opposed to Pelagos and the other LGBT characters introduced in Shadowlands.

I just question whether it will lead to any meaningful normalization down the road. What I’ve observed is that games which add LGBT representation tend to have their communities replaced over time with players who were intrinsically in favor of said representation in the first place. See GW2 as an example.

The gaming community is still largely either transphobic or entirely indifferent to your struggles. Looking at WoW specifically, segregation is a fact of the game with servers like Proudmoore and Wyrmrest Accord being required as special LGBT designated spaces.

I say this as someone who couldn’t possibly get more left

you literally need to stop using literally
