“We want someone to actually be familiar with the genre of film they’re trying to emulate.”
The director was actual from New Zealand
Then I hope you’re against what they did to Ariel. Least the scythe of hypocrisy awaits.
Why does it matter?
I don’t remember any criticism about the Jungle Book not having a Bollywood director, oh wait - it was a white american named Jon Favreau
Bro you rock a 6 foot four heart in a 5’11 body you’re gonna die straight facts.
It’s racist to be portraying heroes of a different race than yours. In today’s times at least. I’d probably get crucified if I made a hero who was African because I’m white.
Even an Indian actor said the Jungle Book resonated well in India.

I’m waiting for when people start saying that only people with bigger or longer ears can play elves otherwise it’s racism
Okay, sorry, a white New Zealander.
You’re misunderstanding what I am saying. I am not claiming that, because Mulan is set in China, the director and writers ought to be Chinese.
I am saying that the 2020 Mulan was directed and written in a way that was meant to emulate Chinese epics, a distinct sort of film popular among Chinese audiences. Part of the reason the film didn’t do very well in China is because it makes no sense to watch an imitative epic when you could, you know, watch authentic Chinese epics.
Importantly, I didn’t say it was my position, and I didn’t say that there are no circumstances where white people ought not to be able to direct films which depict “non-white” cultures or aspects.
These are nuanced conversations, and I’d hoped to provide a little more perspective on the “white director bad” front, but you two have no desire for meaningful conversation in the first place, so I don’t know why I try.
Frostera would it be alright if we friended on bnet?
By all means, please go right ahead.
Ahh, Irfan khan. One of the most legendary actor of my country.
It’s not us spouting that nonsense. It’s those that claim to be they’re fighting for equality.
We’re merely making observations.
Didn’t he die a couple of years ago?
Strawmen, importantly, are not observations. But you know that.
He passed away this year. Entire country mourned for him.
Yeah, he helped propel that movie to a pretty big achievement being Hollywood’s 2nd biggest opening in India.
This year moves so slowly, I’m losing my mind.
Jesus Christ, how far down into the sand is your head!? Nobody is this ignorant.
I feel like a traitor to my childhood for not knowing he died.
That guy was a legendary man…
