As a pally, what’s the most useful spec to run?

Prot paladins are saturated. However I find that even on Pagle people are looking for tanks often…

I find that warriors and druids make better tanks.

Holy paladins are suppose to suck and are obsolete and inferior to other healers

How is Ret? I keep hearing hunters + warlocks are more desirable and ret is pretty worthless.

You’re level 70 and you’re just now asking this?

For dungeons tanks are prefered, paladin rets you need 1 for harder raids though you can get away with more on easier raids. Heals are always needed but there is one role which will always get you a raid spot. That of the pug lfg spammer, get yourself windfury if ret, totem of wrath otherwise.

People want prot paladins because they can aoe down something.

Paladin tanks are amazingly good. Especially this tier.

Ret is the 2nd highest dps melee spec and has one of the highest non-personal dps contributions to a raid group.

You can’t be serious. Other tanks aren’t even in the same league as a paladin in this game.

TBH, it doesn’t matter. Ret is a blast. Tanks and healers are always in demand for dungeon groups. Once badges start dropping from raids, folks will be farming Kara and ZA weekly. You’re more likely to nab a spot in a PuG if you tank or heal.

See, if we had #DualSpecForTBC, you could spec Protection when you want to tank or farm Stratholme, then switch to Retribution when you want to run BGs or arenas. Or Holy, whatev’!

Also, Consecration every 8 seconds > Swipe Tab Swipe Tab Swipe Tab Swipe Tab

Your findings are incorrect. Paladins are the most useful tank by a large margin. In p3 they will be the bread and butter of any raid. Doing Hyjal without one is just a pointless venture due to how bad warrior and druid aoe tanking is. Warriors are arguably the most useless tank because they have the lowest TPS by far and dont come anywhere near the EHP a druid does. Many bosses in this phase do not deal crushing blows which make druids even better as a tank and Illidan being the only boss which requires a shield tank can be covered by the paladin that you will be required to run.

Ret is very strong. They do very good melee dps and you need 3 paladins in the raid anyways. Crusader strike refreshes judgements from the other 2 paladins which makes their lives much easier.

Because people dont understand how a holy paladin is supposed to be played. They aren’t going to do as much raid healing as a shaman or a priest but that isnt the point. You have a holy paladin so your tanks dont die. They cancel cast holy light which does an immense amount of healing and effectively no tank should die under the watchful eye of a good holy paladin. You are not meant to be the highest HPS. You dont need to. You keep the tanks alive. A good holy paladin who does their buffs, keeps the tanks alive and keeps up their judgement is a very good addition to any raid.

Overall the issue with paladins is you want 1 ret, may want 1 holy, and need 1 prot. The ret is super useful for keeping everyones mana up by refreshing wisdom. The prot is the king of aoe tanking and will be able to tank every single boss. Holy paladin is not as amazing as the other two, but they will absolutely keep you tanks alive - if they understand what theyre supposed to be doing. All of the paladin specs are decent for their jobs. If you want to raid heal then paladin isnt the class for you. If you want to be the king of ranged dps then ret isnt the class for you. If you want to be the best spec in the game then prot is the class for you. Prot is the only spec in the game that you will need 1 of. You could have any raid makeup you want, but you will absolutely need 1 prot paladin. Warlocks are nice, but they aren’t mandatory. Hunters are nice but still not mandatory. Prot paladin is absolutely mandatory.

warriors are actually the worst tank and losing value every phase

You can get loosey-goosey with this. Having more than 1 prot may not make sense, but a tank is a tank, to a degree. You can have room for more than one ret/holy, too. Fights that involve multiple tanks can benefit from multiple holy paladins. Multiple rets may not be ideal, but it’s not gonna hurt all that much, either. Especially if they play as a hybrid and fill other roles in a pinch.

how come we never seen rets in 5 mans or pvp really? Where all these rets hiding?

Hpals have their role to play. They lack AOE healing, but you will want at least one for the buffs and robust single target spot healing. Plus they have gear nobody else can use. Hpals seem like a fun, niche role and they really take off in sunwell.

Queue up for battlegrounds. They’re quite common. Watch your chat while you’re in when things start to go south. Chances are, others will be blaming them for the loss… You know… Selfish because they’re not healing.

As far as dungeons go… Well, those groups are formed. I’m sure there are rets in LfG. Invite some!

is farming gear for ret pvp just getting all the set pieces or do you need to mix and match some pve pieces like rogue?

I don’t pay attention to meta stuff. If I’m gonna PvP, I wear my PvP gear. If I’m doing dungeons or raids, I make sure I’m hit capped and stack atr/crit as much as I can (plate only.) I don’t do much PvE these days, though.

Highest ret is 2200ish

Also noticing there are a TON of peoples names on the TBC arena boards that are greyed out rn and you cant look at their profile…

Did they just have a ban wave?

I thought it was a good idea to play ALL THREE!

For 15 years I was a Rogue. Nobody wanted me. I didn’t fit … in … anywhere

Now I fit in all da places and get to do all da things.

Am I broke? I mean - Yeah, I live paycheck to paycheck sometimes, I mean respecs are rough, but do I fit in? Am I loved?

Exactly.

They probably got a level boost from a boosting service and so now are clueless. I have come across plenty of people like that. They get boosted, you see them sitting in the capital city oddly specced and in all green gear with a blue here or there and maybe one epic that is for someone a way lower level than them. Then they get carried to the gear they need from there. And bam. I guild kick people like that. Had one in my old guild years ago. And you can also tell who was boosted by watching them as max level asking how to play their class and asking questions they would have figured out before level 10 of playing that class.

We had druid in my old guild as well.He had a Rank 1 glad title which is glad + the season of the title attached to it. He goes into a RBG using full feral dps gear and enchants yet is playing as boom and was doing the worst. He also had no clue as to what he had been doing wrong. So yea… Dont play with boosted players. They will drag you down to their level 100% of the time.

And as for what this person says here

I place first or second on my ret Classic TBC and in retail as a Venth ret… unstoppable. It is back to back one shots when I use my CDs.

I main spec Holy and Offspec as ret. Holy has the number one highest burst heals of any healer out their if played right. And OP mentions Pagle which is a Classic server, ally dominated and have their best tanks right now as prot dwarf paladins and a human. It is currently the number 1 Classic server so it is far from struggling. Not even close.

Paladin is number 1 in many of the areas that the OP claims they are lacking. hence why i am calling the account boost. I know them when I see them lol.

And then this statement as well… baffled me

I know people who take ret over those two in many cases.

And as for their statement about warriors and druids being better tanks, yea they are better tanks…in PvP. And only as an FC mostly then pally becomes the best PvP tank in WoTLK but this person was talking about PvE and pallies in Classic and TBC are the best for that by a long shot. They are a level 70 asking a lot of questions that would apply to a level 60 Classic pally. So either a friend or family member helped them out or they straight out bought a boost to level cap cuz there would be no way that they would know nothing about ANY spec being max level. And yea this person truly is clueless about every single spec.

I do mix and match for one of my classic pallies. That is a mix of healing gear and dps gear. But my best pally only does one set for everything. Holy/ret mix. I have a pally friends who does Holy and he had his priest friend hook him up with some priest cloth healing gear and my friend who is geared like that will from time to time outperform me in my full holy plate set.

AND you can also do what I do on my MAIN pally, not my second best, but my main Classic pally will mix a little bit from one set and a little bit from another set… all plate. That way I can get two part set bonuses vs one full set bonus.

t6 is where paladin tanks shine, so much trash pulls
