If you don’t want to use WAs, then don’t use them, especially if you don’t plan to touch mythic raid and plan to do lower keys. No reason you can’t join a guild and get AOTC w/o WAs. I know guilds like those exist.
DBM/Bigwigs and GTFO should cover you for the most part.
I don’t use any of the comprehensive class weakauras myself. I am however running Litebuttonauras with my hotbars arranged in such a way that they’re functionally similar. There are some things that just can’t be played well without weakauras (or really studying your buffs). Off the top of my head I don’t know how I’d pull off master of harmony mistweaver without weakauras. I at the very least need the vitality tracker, and ideally one for Chi-Ji stacks, AT/JFS, and JE stacks. I find on vdh in particular I need a good mitigation tracker preferably in bar format as leaving gaps results in corpses.
I can and have gotten by just looking at my buff bar before in the default UI of all things, but that is an absolutely miserable experience. There’s so many small procs and clutter in the buff frame that picking things out is often challenging on the fly. The personal resource bar now is an option, but it leaves so much important stuff out and has some things that you just don’t need to track at all in it on top of it.
Most of my other stuff is QoL adjustments not related to combat along with a couple raid/dungeon weakauras. The dungeon stuff is probably the most important. At minimum I’d run with ElWigo and Big/Littlewigs addons. I take it a step further with a weakaura pack mostly for the additional audio cues or notices for things (with a lot turned off). I am not really able to pick out tiny cast bars in a big trash pull without something to emphasize them, and I have both a plater mod (Quazii) plus AbieCherry’s castbar weakaura. Visually I don’t see most people being able to handle looking at 6+ castbars in a sea of nameplates and picking the right ones out reliably, and certainly not without many, many failures (and possibly wipes). Might as well up my chances of success.
Ya. Classes getting so technical that we need a mod to track all the cooldowns amd procs. Shame that the content that I paid for it out of reach because it requires 3rd party downloads to do. What is even the point of even making the game challenging. The same people that say there is no challenge are the first to stack the deck and demand people to use these mods.
I don’t find them necessary for raid mechanics, I don’t even use DBM or the like these days, but being able to customize your visuals for your rotation is both a huge advantage and makes for a more pleasant play experience.
I only use 3 addons, DBM/Details/Raider.IO. I have decent memorization on mechanics so I adapt, I also dont want “excessive handholding” and I feel like if I use weak-auras ontop of the 3 addons I already use, am I even playing the game anymore?
I can see why tanks and healers use additional addons it trims the complexity and smooths out the difficulty that tanks and healers have over say DPS.
It all comes down to preferences and how people adapt with or without certain types of reliance.
After awhile I dont even use DBM for raids and dungeons, I know what bosses/trash mobs do and just becomes second nature.
I get it for class specific WA, but for Dungeons and Raids it’s just a visual that makes the game easier. You hit import and drag it anywhere on your screen. What’s there to figure out?
Not required but if you are planning higher end M+ or raids then WA can be useful to help keep your focus during some of the chaos. Some dungeons or fights are more chaotic then others and especially in M+ if you aren’t running with the same group all of the time… you never know how each pull will go.
Bottom line, unless your mythic raiding its not needed. Also baffled at how you couldn’t figure out weak auras? Its literally just plug and play, someone else makes them for you and actually making your own isn’t hard at all if you actually sit down and read through the addon…
Uh, what? Anything you’d need has pretty much already been done by someone. All you have to do is copy paste it into the game and move it wherever you want it to be on your screen. Unless you’re doing World First or MDI content there’s zero need to try to make anything on your own.
